Pickle | 203 comments ive won £50 vouchers for a local book store and was wondering what books you consider must have or your favourite?

I know im going to buy a Philip K Dick novel or two, maybe a Sir Arthur C Clarke and that new one Ancillary Justice one appeals but ive no idea what else to buy as there are so many.

I'd like to buy a big chunky sci-fi novel but cant think of one. I also really enjoy some of China Mieville's Bas-Lag novels so anything at all like that?

If you're looking to stick with SF, I recommend The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons. My all-time favorite science fiction series. The first two (Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion) are very different from the second two (Endymion, The Rise of Endymion), and some readers prefer one over the other, but I love them all!

Ive only ever read one book by David Brin and enjoyed it. They also look nice and chunky so i might go for Sundiver.

The Sparrow - sounds interesting.

Anathem - ive only read Snow Crash by the author and it was so different to anything ive read before. I enjoyed it but hesitant to delve back an read another by the author. I presume this is totally different to Snow Crash?

Spin - that sounds right up my street. Hope they have this in.

Never heard of that author before, the front covers for his WWW series are instantly off putting!

thanks for the suggestions.

Foundation by Isaac Asimov

I liked the books I've read by Peter F. Hamilton.

Carolyn (seeford) I also highly recommend anything by Sawyer, even the WWW series, which is YA. His books extrapolate new technology from where we are today, and the ramifications of its use make you really think, and have stayed with me long past the closing of the book. For me, that's the mark of excellent SF. Many of his novels are stand-alone, which is very rare nowadays, but his series, especially Hominids, are very good as well.

Deedee | 136 comments Agree: anything by Robert J. Sawyer would be good. If you like space opera, check out Peter F. Hamilton.
