Put your comments about Part 1, chapters 1-11 here.

Larissa | 270 comments Blithely reading along the first few pages. Some weird reference to Grammy--a statue? a robot? a weirdo? And then BAM! WHAT THE CRAP????

Missy | 128 comments I was confused at first too. This story gets more and more bizarre but I enjoyed it!

Larissa | 270 comments The Truman Show + The Lottery + The Crucible + Under the Dome? This is a seriously crazy story. Just wow. I don't even know what to say. I have a feeling this is gonna get so bad. (Bad as in scary, not bad reading!)

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Glad to see you two have gotten a head start! Enjoy! Will be starting around the 1st.

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Great mix of humor and creepiness. I'm worried the boys are going to provoke the witch. Already bad things are starting to happen. Like that lady beating the prisoner to death. And the town folk are acting like a mob, not wanting to give the guy a decent burial. Not looking good!

I understand why Tyler wants to break the whole secret wide open. To be a prisoner in your home town, and to have a girl-friend outside of town. The only way to keep her is to bring her into the fold. And she would resent him for the rest of her life.

Emma This is getting really creepy. It was horrible to see how the community reacted to Arthur's death. What Jayden did to the witch was disgusting and I'm anxious about poor Fletcher. You just know it's all going to get a whole lot worse...

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Was very anxious about Fletcher, too!

Emma This is the point at which this book stopped being a titillating horror to one that actually horrified me!

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
I hear ya, Emma!

Janice (jamasc) | 801 comments I've read the first three chapters. The first paragraph started us off with a bang! Katherine run over in the street. Then when Steve arrives home and finds her in his living room, I was confused. Does she apparate?

It's interesting - two books in a row with mouths and eyes sewn shut.

The town itself is spooky. I had to laugh when the real estate agent was trying to dissuade the would-be buyers. The "you-don't-want-this" tactic is actually a great way to sell something. Reverse psychology.

Reading on....

Larissa | 270 comments Ha, yeah I forgot about the opening when she gets run over---I thought it was someone doing a magic trick. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 801 comments I finished to the end of chapter 11. The overwhelming feeling I have at this point is the one I get when reading dystopia. I feel anxious, powerless, and outraged. I don't like that feeling which is why I don't read a lot of dystopia. I think it's interesting how the author has combined a ghost story with a dystopian situation.

At this point, the dystopia overwhelms the supernatural horror, though I have to say that I would be totally freaked if Katherine was to appear at the foot of the bed and stay there for three days.

One has to wonder if there is any cognitive function, or if her meanderings are just rote. But, she seems to be reacting - she approached Matt in the house, Griselda at the river, and there was a third one that I can't think of at the moment. The townsfolk seem to be alarmed when she does, like it's out of character.

Joydan is a nasty piece of work, and one has to know he's going to cause some major problems. His taunting of the witch was disgusting.

Tyler's interest is completely different than Joydan's. He's serious in his intent to find a solution, whereas Joydan's is just malevolent. There's going to be trouble as a result of both of them, regardless of their intent.

Reading on....

Yes, regardless of the characters' intent throughout this novel, bad things continue to happen. It's relentless. And I understand your anxiety. I had the same feeling reading this book.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 598 comments Just really starting this - so chapter 1 (view spoiler)

Janice (jamasc) | 801 comments Sorry, but I have to chuckle, Linda. Yes, that first chapter is an eye-opener. Well, for all but granny. :)

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 598 comments LOL Janice!!! So true!

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Linda, more WTF stuff coming! Gets even creepier!

Right away, I was confused. Went back to the beginning because I thought I missed something....apparently not. Sooo I am supposed to be confused at first. That always frustrates me in books, because I think I may have drifted off not paying close enough attention. It didn't take long to have some things explained though.

Over my frustration now and am liking what I've read so far.

Fletcher knows something wrong is lurking around. Please don't let anything happen to the dog!

lol! Had a reaction to Matt coming to the dinner table wrapped only in a towel. My parents would never have allowed us kids to be at the dinner table not fully clothed!

Can't wrap my head around "Gramma" being a physical being. You are not supposed to be able to throw washcloths on ghosts heads, nor trick them into running into things. Don't they "walk through walls"? If you approach them aren't you supposed to pass right through them?

Part of Katherine's story reveals that she was supposedly forced to kill her son in order to save her daughter. What actually happened to her daughter? Are there descendants?

Why is it okay to run over Kathrine/Gramma with a "carnival cart" by some townsfolk, but not okay for some kids to cause her to run into a lamppost? Will the Council punish both parties equally?

Dark humor in the scene of taking bets on where Gramma will first appear to the new couple in town.

Feel sorry for Tyler and the Delarosas being stuck in Black Spring.

WHAT do you mean you don't know what HEX is the acronym for? urgh!

Larissa | 270 comments GOOD POINT about the carnival cart! You're right--even though I don't think they were trying to be malicious, it seems like a fairly big oversight that no one got punished or at least a big "talkin' to."

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 598 comments Sorry but I'm moving rally slow with this one..... Just finished with chapter 3 - (view spoiler)

Janice (jamasc) | 801 comments I was a bit confused about the carnival cart running over Katherine myself and kind of glossed over it because it didn't make much sense to me. It wasn't until you mentioned it here, Almeta, that I made the connection. You're right about the adults not being punished, and the children were.

message 23: by Kim (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kim Kaso | 24 comments It seems as if running her over when it is the adults is filed under "camouflaging", especially if it is done by anyone on council or "official".

First 11 chapters flew by, just started this yesterday afternoon. Finished a chunky dystopian book for another group, and picked this one up not knowing what to expect, other than trusting to SK's good judgement and the wisdom of this group. Much to like this far, but I feel uneasy for the village and our beloved main characters.

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
Off to a good start, Kim. So sorry, for my late response.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 598 comments So I'm back to this book again! I really feel like I should like this. LOL!!!! Lucky for me, I found an audio copy and I have the book as well and it is working great!!!

Thoughts so far. I like several others is appalled by Jaydins behavior with Katherine, and not to excuse it but his father was such a bully, he showed him that is is okay to treat women that way. I thought it was weird that Griselda is "talking" to Katherine! I'm not sure why she thinks she is helping the situation and bringing her food when her mouth is sown shut - she does have issues!

Poor Tyler just wants to have a life - I actually feel bad for all of the kids at Black Springs their life is nonexistent- poor kids!

Can you give someone a dishonorable burial??? And why - just because he didn't abide by the rules??? The people are breaking rules all of the time - I think the mayor and the council pick and choose who they are going to fine or give community service to.

Debra (debra_t) | 2574 comments Mod
The politics in this community are very dodgy, that's for sure. And yeah, I remember feeling bad for the kids.
