Saar The Book owl | 2952 comments I've got an Iphone, but it's an older version and most apps I can't install anymore. It's always on silence mode, so it can take a while to reply on calls/messages. I hate it when it constantly makes noise. Like, at work, when I work a shift with a co - worker, 4 of the co - workers has their sound on, so it's always beeping when they get messages. So annoying!

I usually use my phone for emails, what's app, messenger and the Kindle app when I don't have a book with me.

I hate answering the phone, so texting is easier. I'm glad it's not attached to my arm like a second hand.

That's me, though I would add my Kindle in there as well. I like the convenience of the Kindle, and the saving of space (our house is quite small, so space for books is limited), but really only for modern novels. For anything else, I prefer a physical book, especially if it's old or illustrated. I've passed on a lot of printed books over the years, but with some, e.g. Farmer Giles of Ham with the Pauline Baynes illustrations, and my first edition of Dunsany's The Book of Wonder, they'll have to pry them from my cold dead hands.

Ann-Marie | 4920 comments I have an old iPhone I use for audiobooks only, another old one but newer than my audiobook one that I use for work and my current iPhone. This is the first time I didn't get a new one after 2 years because I was scared the iPhone 15 would have issues but I'll likely get one Thanksgiving weekend, that is the time the best deals are available. I also have an iPad on a data plan which is overkill, I admit I am extra lol

I still collect physical books like crazy, but don't tend to read them too often, just use them as reference and a lending library... I got out of the habit after spending a few years abroad and exclusively using an ereader... I have a Kobo and I love it... it's mostly open source, easy to sideload, and was the first brand of ereader to go waterproof, so I can take it literally everywhere... I also like being able to read hands-free, like when eating--no having to hold books open with elbows. Sometimes I turn the page with my nose.

message 5959: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 0 comments I use all formats. Reading is reading for me. Audiobooks are great for when I am having a headache and can't wear my glasses. Kindles and other ebooks are great for when you are waiting in line, at the doctor's office, sitting outside, on a trip, etc. And if the book you are reading has maps or other illustrations I prefer a physical book.

Can summer wind down soon?... every time I look at the weather, I get my hopes up, when I see some 80F days... by the time they arrive, they become 90-95F days... all summer long... unless it's a rainy day on occasion...

Going to work at 4am, I can catch some half-decent 70F weather, and really nice 60F weather sometimes... rarely above 75F after hours of darkness... get into work... stay inside all day... then my shift ends, time to drive home, leave the building, and PAIN/BRIGHTNESS/HOT VEHICLE...

Ha! I literally had this convo with my husband before signing online. It's 97 here. My veggie garden is suffering. My kids don't want to go outside. I was volunteering street tagging earlier (where you walk car to car asking for money) and I was dying. I am SO ready for this summer to end. Last year was not anywhere as bad.

Timelord Iain | 33020 comments Mod
This year has definitely felt hotter... maybe some heat waves?... I don't follow the news on it, just check weather on google...

BUT... last year there were big power outages, a power station was struck by lightning and a major converter exploded... so the weather felt more dangerous... some unlucky people were without power for a week... I lost power for 8hrs... a different time, tree branches were damaged and a branch created a line from a power line to a garage roof and caught fire across the street... I saw a neighbor on the way to work where a big tree obliterated their garage... just felt like damage everywhere for a few months...

So... start of summer, I was like, I'll take some heat for calmer weather... but now, I'm over it...

We've also been hovering around 35 C (I think this is around 95 F?), but the humidity never lets up, so it's still a similar temp if you go out in the middle of the night or early in the morning. It feels like a sauna every time I leave the house..

My freebie reading shelves are starting to feel like a waste...

Kindle Unlimited, Audible Plus, Hoopla... so many services are dropping reading options or changing their catalog...

Nirkatze has noted alot of missing books in the New Orleans Hoopla system...

I've recently been noting dropped series on Audible Plus... only the first book is available in these series, now:

Death Qualified
The Hum and the Shiver
The Sword-Edged Blonde

We noted the loss of Vorkosigan Saga awhile ago too...

And I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg...

Weather still says it's gonna be 65F tonight, 78F tomorrow, 59F tomorrow night, and then alternating 75-80F days and 55-60F nights the rest of the week...

Here's hoping... usually it starts spiking by now, if it's gonna spike...

Ann-Marie | 4920 comments Yesterday was & today is going to be shitty but then the temps are supposed to be 70s/80s thru Saturday but rainy/scattered thunderstorms so just a different kind of shitty. I have been going outside for my morning coffee the last few weeks, I like to sit outside on my lunch normally but not when it is ungodly hot so this is my compromise and I like it, may be something I continue weather permitting :)

message 5988: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2276 comments I should do that. I work from home and I have a little porch with some little rocking chairs. I never go out there. It would be nice to spend my lunch break out there. My porch faces east so it’s in shadow come mid day. Though today is supposed to be 98. Maybe I’ll wait a few more weeks. Ha ha.

Yesterday afternoon we got a short thunderstorm. So nice.

It is very refreshing but I agree if it is too hot it can have the opposite effect which is why I have been taking my coffee outside recently if it isn't raining :)

Monika | 2145 comments geez! 35-40! that's hot! We're in coastal town so humidity and pressure is kinda mental at the moment, don't remember to feel so sticky before... my son hates it... temperature was main reason we decided to not go to see my Dad this summer, in Poland weather is even worse than here in the UK. over 30 degrees Celsius mixed with thunder storms, heavy rains and strong winds. I'm worried for my Dad cause he's cardiac case and pressure outside is totally upside down. I understand Diana, furry babies needs their walk, but taking them out in this heat is totally not safe. We're taking our girl out only early morning and late afternoon when it's cooler.

Yea... at certain temps, sidewalks burn animal feet...

I assume you meant you don't remember summer being this sticky in years past, Monika... and I agree... summers feel worse in recent years, altho my memory could just be tricking me into letting the worst of years past fade away...

I remember all the news stories last year or the year before, when cable car cables started melting in Seattle/Portland/etc...

I think winters have been colder, too, with Cold Surges hitting -30--35F windchill every 2-3 years or so... that's about the point where Celsius and Fahrenheit match... super cold, for not living in the far north... usually starts causing trouble with car batteries...
