Chris (murphy44) | 710 comments Hello again old friends and people that I haven't met yet!

I would like to declare that I am once again trying to get back to the book reading happy fun times! I started reading 20+ books in the last couple of years and didn't finish a single title. Not because they sucked, but because there was no follow through, and too many titles sitting around that looked good (the downside to ADD). So I'm trying to come back to get some reading accountability in my life! It's good to see a lot of names that I remember from 6-7 years ago, hopefully we can reconnect and get some buddy reads on the go. Now if I remember right, updating your "Currently Reading" page numbers and comments spams everyone's main page, for this, I'm so sorry. But I had to add the books that I started as a way to get a reminder going of what I'm "Currently Reading" LOL --> Yep, 20 books. The first time that I REALLY got into FBR was when my oldest son was about 8, and that's now the age of my youngest son. So that's another reason why I'm trying to get back into the swing of things here, I read 30 books that year, I'm hoping for a repeat!

So I'll just leave that as is and try to reach out to those folks that I remember chatting with so many years ago to try to reconnect and see what's up!? I'm also looking forward to meeting new peeps as well! Cheers!

Gone but still remembered...

Chris H vs Chris M FOREVER, in the reading competition :D

Welcome back... we've had our ups and downs here as well... we're definitely on a post-covid upswing, back to the old days of 30-50 BRs/month, so there's always something to get into...

Looking at your 20 Currently Reading books...

If you want to keep reading those, and talk about them, plenty have recent threads you can pop in on...

Lies of Locke Lamora was read back in October... I don't know if people continued with book 2+ or treated it as a standalone...

We're Legends and Lattes megafans around here... I think someone is reading it in their real life book club this year so it's on the docket... i'm sure you can get a Bookshops & Bonedust BR started between then and the release of book 2/3 in the Fall: Brigands & Breadknives

We love Murderbot around here, altho it's been over a year since the last BR...

We finished a Dresden BR a year past last summer, and I think Nirkatze is eyeing her next re-read sooner than later... they'd be on book 4 in no time...

I think people were reading that John Gwynne series super recently...

We read Malevolent Seven a year or 2 ago... we're neck deep in reading our way through the Sebastien de Castell bibliography... Malevolent Seven, Greatcoats, Spellslinger, now Argosi, with plans to end on the Greatcoats anthology and the newer sequel series Court of Shadows... and probably revisit Malevolent Seven when it gets a sequel (it's open to a sequel someday)...

We/they read Empire of the Vampire last year leading up to the release of Empire of the Damned, and I'm sure there'll be another re-read when book 3 comes out...

Blacktongue Thief was read last summer...

I see you love Murderbot so much you're Currently Reading it twice ;)

Terrifyingly cute is pretty much their brand... Kay & Tay have been in my youtube feed since before Kay got pregnant with baby Elle...

That vid popped up in my feed last night, and not long later I saw a 10 month video where Elle was in a Pikachu onesie picking her starter pokemon (not sure why that was a thing... at least Harry Potter made immediate sense to me with the 9.75 month age)...

Anyway, I think I'll leave it there for now, especially considering they took a loooooong time to come for such a lot of money (must be like a year and a half) and I just wanna see how the series progresses with RoW and the 5th book not being as great.

One of the ceremonies that I think is fun from Asian cultures is the future career pick. Generally done on 1st birthday. Put stuff that represents different kind of professions in an area, put the kid in the middle and whatever the kid grabs & keeps in hand is the "job" they're gonna have.

Pretty sure I had this when I was a kid, but I never talked about it with my family.

message 6240: by Nirkatze (new)

Nirkatze | 18725 comments That sounds a lot like the ceremony for identifying the next Dalai Lama (or other minor Lamas).

I fell and fractured my toe around 14 months ago... later found out I partially tore the sesamoid ligament, too... and between that and trying to avoid putting pressure on my foot while healing, my knees started bothering me, and lifting myself out of chairs in bad ways, my arms started hurting me...

Everything's connected sadly, and I'm constantly trying to find the best way to not hurt old injuries or cause new ones, until they're all 100% healed...

The answer is to always move your body well and stop trying to overcompensate with bad movements.

At least that's what I have to do.

Plus massage, proper treatment, ointments, rest and adjustable compression braces.

Oh and stop doing stuff that totally aggravates injured parts. That's the hardest one to do, but it's better to put that on pause for 6-8 weeks vs constantly being injured.

I know... it's hard avoiding basic movement/tasks, tho...

I had a month of pain after some bad luck pushing snow away from apartment/car in January... jolted arm/shoulder and it led to alot of tightness/pain... time/RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and alot of massaging the areas helped and now that's mostly passed...

message 6250: by Felina (last edited Mar 18, 2025 02:47PM) (new)

Felina | 2280 comments I'm sorry to hear that, Diana! I wish you a speedy recovery.

I hurt my left knee about 3 years ago, right before we went to Disney world. I had to ride around in a scooter which was equally horrible and awesome cause we got to skip lines. Anyway, it just randomly flares up. I can never tell what will set it off. I'll do nothing new and wake up the next day and can barely walk. Frustrating.

I also hurt my shoulder playing fetch with my cat. Yes, he loves to chase puff balls. He even brings back the puff. But I messed up a ligament. I went to the doctor and had to do physical therapy because my doctor was afraid it would heal wrong. Everybody I talked to about it laughed at me especially the doctors and nurses. It is actually pretty funny.
