Sarah | 342 comments I'm hoping to get this one in. It sounds really interesting.

Sarah | 728 comments I just found this group today and am currently reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. September is halfway over, but I just so happen to have American Gods sitting in a stack of unread books so I will try to get to it before the months end!

Kaseadillla | 1373 comments Mod
finally starting this... ugh so behind

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok I'll join you... I don't feel like I got much out of this the first time through, so I've been meaning to try again.

Kaseadillla | 1373 comments Mod
YEEEEEE Cheryl yes want to read it with someone else

Cheryl (cherylllr) I did have to order it from the library, hope it comes in soon!

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh gosh. Sorry, but I just don't have the stomach for this. I got about 50 pp in last night and put it down because I knew if I gave myself a higher dose I'd have nightmares.

However, I do see even more brilliance now than I did the first time, so I do recommend it to all who can read thrillers, horror, and the like.

MissLemon | 274 comments American Gods by Neil Gaiman I 'read' this earlier this year as an dramatised audio version
I'm not sure I'd have got through it any other way - it's been on my TBR list for such a long time - but I'm glad I did.
Worth a try for those struggling with it.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh, I find it an easy enough read - just too brutal for me, with what I've got going on in my life etc.

message 11: by Pippa (last edited May 13, 2017 07:23AM) (new)

Pippa P. | 1 comments I loved this book. As I recall, it did require a bit of work to get through it but it was well worth it.

I might have to read it again sometime.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I don't understand the use of the words "struggling" and "work" here. What's difficult about this beautifully written story?

Melanie I LOVE this story, but the plot is quite twisty and confusing for the first third of it. Also, urban fantasy is a niche type of writing that some people just can't buy into. I understand the struggle for some.

Angel Gavrikova | 1 comments I am just starting this book, like it so far, I think

Bonnie I have it on kindle and am kind of reading it slowly along with watching the new show.

message 16: by Radhika (new) - added it

Radhika Very excited to read this!

message 17: by Nick (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nick I had already read October selections in my travels so I got started on American Gods about a week ago. I am enjoying it and I think it is worth your time.

Sarah | 728 comments I’ll start this one after I finish reading IT!

message 19: by Synthwaver (new)

Synthwaver | 29 comments I will start current monthly reads with this book although I won't start it until I get a few piled up short books.

lucie (arey) i've watched the tv show and i liked it
i am looking forward to read the book now

message 21: by Nick (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nick I just finished. It is pretty awesome!

dnela (daniela_nieblina) In all honesty, the plot seems intriguing but it shift and moves around so much that I'm very confused.
But top notch voice narrators for the audible full cast! I love Shadow's voice.

Amanda (thompsa594) | 5 comments I've watched the TV show which prompted me to buy the book. I've just started reading it and I am already loving it!

message 24: by Megan (new) - added it

Megan Just came in the post today can’t wait to start it 😆

Kaseadillla | 1373 comments Mod
So I started this, loved it, and then proceeded to lose the book. WHAT. so I'm on a like 3 month hiatus on this book, been sitting in my "currently reading" for forever.
yikes
hoping to pick it back up/find another copy.

Sarah | 728 comments I started it last night and I’m hooked! I don’t know why I hesitated to pick it up before, I should have known Neil wouldn’t disappoint! Reviews made me think it was going to be a really serious read, but it’s full of fun!

Christine (clarkepopunta) | 102 comments Kaseadilla - I feel you! I loveeeeed the beginning. I love Neil's style so much. But I am stuck. Which indicates to me that the story needed some tightening up. I love this book though. So frustrating.

vrenzy goel | 355 comments i started it today and it is not what i expected. its fun to read once and well it is typical neil and yet well i am glad the club picked this book and i got to read it.

message 29: by Ulla (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ulla Gomez | 32 comments I have started it today. So far I am liking it.

vrenzy goel | 355 comments its really really long, did anyone else feel like maybe it should have been a couple hundred pages shorter? a lot of things seem unnecessary, neil's books have always been quirky but this is too much!

Sarah | 728 comments I’m enjoying the read, but for some reason I have to go back a couple of pages every time I pick it up to remember what’s going on.

Cassinator | 43 comments Carolyn wrote: "American Gods by Neil GaimanI 'read' this earlier this year as an dramatised audio version ..."

I read this, it was amazing, highly recommend this version!

Zainab Al Lawati (zainaballawati) | 224 comments I wasn’t planning on joining even though it is on my to-read shelf. However, now that I finished my recent Audiobook I will start listening to American Gods.
I usually only listen to light reads but I will see how will it go.

Edit: Oh my God it is 19 hrs and 40 mins. That is a long long book.

Amanda | 64 comments Vrenzy wrote: "its really really long, did anyone else feel like maybe it should have been a couple hundred pages shorter? a lot of things seem unnecessary, neil's books have always been quirky but this is too much!"

I'm reading an edition with author's preferred text that was published for the book's 10th anniversary, and Gaiman mentions in the intro that he added scenes that were originally cut from the original. According to wikipedia, he added 12,000 words.

Sofie | 10 comments I just started this too - and I am also reading the 10th anniversary edition. I am just 70 pages in but so far i LOVE it. I am really excited to keep on reading tonight.

lucie (arey) I will start to read it later this afternoon, wohoo

message 37: by Nati (new)

Nati (pagesofnati) I wonder if I'm too late to catch up. Will try!

Leesa Help people, I'm struggling here!

Admittedly am back on holiday and the reading has been sparse and just a little here and there but I am regretting picking up the anniversary edition with the extra 12,000 words.

Please tell me it gets better... I'm on page 243 😩

Sarah | 728 comments I don’t know why, but this one isn’t grabbing me either. I feel ashamed because I always say Neil is my favorite author, but for some reason I am not into this one as much as I have been with his other works! It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s slow going.

Leesa I've only read Neverwhere by him before Sarah so I'm relatively new to his work. I got this book when visiting New York and didn't realise it was the anniversary edition when I bought it. Even that has annoyed me because I prefer reading the original text and then going back to the read if I enjoyed it.

Sigh. I want to keep pushing through but I'm also really desperate for my next Outlander book too...

Sarah | 728 comments I went ahead and started a new book, but I’ll still try to read 10-20 pages a day (if not more) in this one!

Sarah | 728 comments I also think it has a lot to do with the fact that I have been insanely busy. If I were reading this during a relaxing summer I would be totally into it. I do like it, it has me googling like crazy and learning new things! It’s just a lot to keep up with and pay attention to, for me anyway since I want to actually understand the Gods that are being represented.

Leesa Good plan, maybe I should do that too... although I'm still technically reading 'A tale of two cities' from months ago too! Maybe three is the charm! Hehe

message 44: by Kyra (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyra Keeton | 277 comments I started it yesterday afternoon and I'm already almost read 100 pages, I am really enjoying it so far. I've never read anything by Gaiman so that part is new, but Sarah I too am googling like crazy too. I love mythology, so so far this was a great choice for me...even though I was apprehensive at first especially after just finishing my novels for my Brit Lit class.

Renee (elenarenee) I may re read this one. Its a fun read. I have decided to focus on Count of Monte Christo. I have not read it for almost 30 years. I last read it in French. I want to read it in my native tongue this time. Since its such a big book I don't know if I will get to read American Gods

Betsy | 930 comments I'd like to read along as I love Gaiman. Like Renee I'll have to see if I get time.

message 47: by Tawnee (new)

Tawnee (won_tawn78) I've had this in my audible account for awhile; I think it's finally time to listen to it! I've heard it's an incredible audiobook for those who like to listen instead of read occasionally!

message 48: by ó (new) - rated it 2 stars

ó | 38 comments I started this book years ago, stopped, continued later, stopped again... currently it's sitting at 78% on my kindle, and I only vaguely remember where I was in the story. Unfortunately, it just never hooked me as much as I thought it would. I liked Gaiman's other stuff that I read (The Graveyard Book, Stardust, Coraline), and the premise is wonderful, so I can't really explain what's wrong with it... it's just not working on me as expected, I guess. I still really want to finish it, so hopefully a group read will help with that :)

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

I read this years ago and it's one of these books that I remember loving, but being absolutely confused and confounded by it as soon as I had finished it - I wouldn't have been able to give you a summary at the time and I sure as hell can not now. It's one of the few books that ever left me feeling like this, so I want to see how I feel about it a few years later.
Seeing it on the front page is actually what drew me to this group in the first place, so I'll definitely be re-reading it!
Hopefully it lives up to my memories of it :)

message 50: by Erin (new) - added it

Erin van der Pijl Just got mail from the local library that I can pick it up. Curious about this one since I've only read Stardust
