My mom bought me this book as a gift not realizing that it was the first in a series. I read it, several times actually, before I read any of the earlier books.

After reading the others I felt like this one was very light in tone compared to the other ones. More positive.

Fitz, Shae, Dutifull and Thick seem like they have known each other for quiet some time and have a good history. I also got the impression that Fool and Fitz had an easy going close friendship before he took up his nobleman identity and Fitz had to pretend not to know him.

When I read the other books I was surprised to see how much more friction and mistrust there where between them earlier.

I wish I could have read them in order but it was quiet interesting getting the story out of order like that too.
