I agree with you there were some high points in this book.... But Margo brought this book into a whole different dimension.... My favourite part was the road trip and I did like Qs adventure with Margo

So if you hated the main characters and also the main plot, then why read the book?

Exactly this. And I knew when he started after her that she wouldn't go back home. She'd worked too hard to disappear - which was entirely her right. And given the circumstances and how she felt,I don't blame her one bit. I was also surprised that she was surprised to see Quentin. But was she really? Or was she just putting on?

Well, for one it's not something you can tell before hand, and for other, there's always hope for it to turn better at some point.

message 55: by Sara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sara GOD. I hated this book too. His obsession with saving her was so freaking annoying. It seems like John Green does this in a lot of his book. Miles tried to "save" Alaska, Augustus metaphorically "saved" Hazel Grace by taking her out of her depression, and Quentin was fixated on "saving" Margo. Not every girl needs saving. Now he has teenage girls hoping for a boy to "save" them. Ugh.

Also, this book was just boring. Quentin only ever thought about Margo. Like, dude, get a hobby, you know?

Catherine Davison If this is what young adults are reading as literary fiction these days I seriously despair. This was the most boring, puerile, long winded, self indulgent piece of writing I've ever read. To think that when I was in the age group for which this novel is ostensibly written we were reading To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men and Grapes of Wrath. Do young readers really gain any insights into human nature reading about this group of self absorbed friends who go on about having large testicles, ''peeing" in bottles and getting drunk? This book was a great disappointment.

message 57: by Emma (new) - rated it 1 star

Emma I agree 100%. After reading great books like of mice and men and the book thief and the catcher in the rye, PT couldn't compare.

Millie Disappointing. A bad representation of John Green. The end was quotable, but the plot was... bad.

Rebecca Hunte I really loved it the first time, but then I reread it and I almost set it aflame. So yeah, burning passion. I found it to be just as pretentious and overly metaphorical as all of his other books, and Ben's horribly annoying sexism did not help in the slightest. Just....eugh, I can't stand it.

Grace NO YOURE NOT!!
THIS BOOK IS SHITTY!!
unrealistic charachters, meaningless clues, margo is just an attention freak stop trying to make her unique john green, quentin has an unhealthy obsession, radar is so so so unrealistic, at the end, i kinda wish margo killed herself because the clues would ACTUALLY HAVE A MEANING, and its bringing quentin and his friends closer but nooooo margo just wanted attention , i just hate hate hate this book

Nope, I hated it too just the same

Marion Willingham God yes I hated this book. Q and Margo are just all of John Green's characters.

message 63: by LDB (new) - rated it 2 stars

LDB I'm super late to this party, BUT, need to know if I should even finish this book. I've liked some of Greene's other work, but the first half of this book is more than just shallow and stereotypical. The way Green portrays sexual attraction to the girls in this book is both contrived ("honey bunnies??" so many teens sayin' that) and offensive--the reference to girls' qualities is almost exclusively sexual, with the exception of the implausible fascinating manic Margo. Margo is both a tired trope of the super exciting manic genius AND gets the honor of being creepily objectified (so did not enjoy the guy chat where Q's 3 friends all demand a graphic description of her breasts, each specifying how he'd like them described). Teens are, um, hormonal and say gross stuff, but the dialog is neither believable nor appreciated.

Nope! Hating it right now.

Asmita I guess everyone has their own choice but I neither likednor disliked this book. I was expecting a tragic ending where Margo is dead and they f in MD her body etc. Etc. But when I finished it I felt like a big chunk of it was missing. I hated the characters too.

message 66: by Tammy (new) - rated it 1 star

Tammy I've read two John Green books (A Fault In Our Stars and Paper Towns) because I wanted to see what the hype was for...his books are just not for me. I didn't enjoy reading them and not a lot of the plot for Paper Towns stuck in my head. Honestly I felt like I was just wasting my time. I did own Looking For Alaska but I didn't want to continue wasting my time trying to force myself to like an author's books when I clearly didn't.

Katie My friends have been talking about this book so I finally read it. I really liked it but how could he leave her in the end. No!!!!!☹️

No! It was worse than a glass of warm water instead of a fresh beer.

BELINDA I wasn't a big fan it fell short for me.

Alice I read the book on its own and I thought it was really good. But rereading it after the others like Looking for Alaska and The Fault in our Stars, it's just not great. I still don't hate it though.

No I totally agree! This book was so strange and confusing and totally not what I normally expect from John Green!

No! I hate it. Its a disgust to literature and it saddens me that this book is honored in schools. It lacks depth and is mentally unstable for young people.

Zoe Loved it . . . much more than I thought it would. Best John Green book!

Yolanda terrible end

message 76: by Sepp (new) - rated it 1 star

Sepp They even turned it into a movie! As awful as the book.

James Smith Nina wrote: "I Loved it.... up until the ending and now I cant even think about it. Why did he leave her?! He should have made her come back. I am very disappointed with the ending but besides that, I really lo..."

I actually hated this book until the ending. Until the ending, I expected this book to play out like a lot of typical romances do: there's a bubbly girl and an uptight guy and the girl helps him loosen up and they both run away together. I was expecting that typical ending, or for him to drag her back home, but I never could have predicted how it actually ended.
