C (crini) I've been eyeing this series for a long time now but was always put off my the amount of books in the series.

Then I saw that there are new collections coming out and I'm a bit confused and could need your help :D

I have no idea where to start reading because these collections seem to group books by topic instead of publication order!? So you don't have to read these books in publication order?

Which ones are you favorites? Which collection should I get first???

I love these books but I haven't read any of them for a few years. As far as I'm aware, you don't need to read them in order as most of the time they follow different characters. There are some where you might have the same protagonist for several books, and I know there are themed collections e.g. the Death collection.

However, I'm pretty sure you can read them in any order :D My personal favourite is Mort.

Trillian | 68 comments I read the books nearly in publication order, but that isn't necessary at all. There are four main thematic groups based on the characters: death, Rincewind and the wizards, the witches and the city watch. In this groups I think it's a good idea to try to read the books more or less in publication order because sometimes when you switch from the first book of e.g. the city watch to the 6th you may not understand every reference - but it doesn't really influence the reading experience if you just read the books as they are combined in these collections. The best idea is to start with the first book The Color of Magic because if I remember correctly this book describes the discworld really good and it's a perfect start. After that you can choose the books as you prefer. This is quite helpful to figure out which characters those books are about.

btw Mort is one of my favourites too, but I also really liked The Color of Magic :)
