Opening discussions for the group's October 2016 Classics pick: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Very appropriate for Halloween indeed!

This discussion is SPOILER FREE. If you've read the book and want to discuss, please head on over to the spoiler filled discussion HERE .

Happy reading!!

Sarah | 728 comments I've been sick in bed for days, so I've already finished! Can't wait to see what everyone else thinks. Happy reading!

Lena (nlgmcr69) | 81 comments Started reading this last night. I always struggle with "most classics" as the writing styles often slow me down, but I hope to finish soon.

Sarah | 728 comments Lena, I had the exact same problem with this book. Halfway through I had decided to give it 3 stars, but I ended up giving it 4 because luckily the story is good and makes up some for the over-stuffed sentences. :)

Leesa I'm excited to read this and I found my copy in a used bookstore yesterday for £1- score!

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) | 668 comments I haven't read this novel in years! I am enjoying it once again!

read it for the first time earlier this year. totally get why most high schools require it for reading.

Luella | 97 comments I really have wanted to read this forever. I hope I get to it before the end of the year!

Hectaizani I’m bumping this topic up to the top because I’m planning on reading Frankenstein in August. I’d love it if people would join me so I’m not discussing it with myself. :)

Hectaizani For those of you joining in with my August Buddy Read of Frankenstein - this is the edition of the book that I found available for free for Kindle.

You don't have to read this one - but there were some folks that couldn't find the free version on Amazon.

Thanks for bumping! I'll be here for the discussion starting soon.

Sally taylor (sallyjanet) | 247 comments I am reading this again this month because I just bought this very cool edition, with "leather-feeling" cover and anatomy clear pages and a centerfold! LOL,, but the illustrations are great! Classics Reimagined, Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

I just looked up that edition on Amazon. It looks pretty amazing. If I had room on my bookshelves - well, I'll come back and consider after reading, if I love it so much I need to own it that's the one I'm going to buy.

I saw that there was a Kindle edition it would not be the same - no vellum feel, no leatherette. In this case the dead tree edition is clearly superior!

Kerri | 710 comments I hope you all have an enjoyable buddy read! I will not be joining because I personally hate this book with a passion, most especially the character Frankenstein.

If any of you find yourself in the same boat, you are not alone!
If you enjoy it than I am glad it brought someone joy. Maybe I will learn something new from the discussion that will bring me to hate it a little less.

Happy readings!

I actually ordered a copy of classics reimagined Alice in Wonderland because it's on the list of books I want to read/reread and I found it for a really good price on Ebay. I'll probably end up doing like you and collecting the whole series. Thank you for "enabling me!"

Anisha Inkspill (anishainkspill) | 8 comments I've been wanting to read this one for ages, I'll try do my best to try and read it this month

Brady Parkin Best of luck to everyone on this read. I remember reading this one the first time around and I got most of the way through it but wasn't able to completely finish it. I wish you more luck than I had. Haha. I look forward to hearing what you all think of it.

Tara Burns | 6 comments I'm really enjoying this so far. I am actually really enjoying the old fashion manner of writing. How does this group discussion work? I'd like to comment on what I read but don't want to ruin it for people who are not as far as me.But

There’s a second thread called something like Frankenstein SPOILERS where you can talk about anything you want about the content of the book. The conversation will move over there as more people start reading.

I actually didn’t start yet I’m trying to finish up the last few chapters of a library book that’s due on Monday with no renewals. I should be able to do that today.

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) I just started listening.

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Well, this a tempting read. Good initiative, Hectaizani!

I'll try to join you. Not a promise, just an intention, so far! :-)

Tr1sha | 626 comments I’m about to start reading this now.

Hectaizani Awesome. Join us in the SPOILER thread if you have any comments, or rants. I know some people really hated this book and some loved it.

Jen Espinosa (jenespinosa) | 10 comments I’m in! Although my book is back home and I’m on holidays right now. I’ll start reading it on the 20th.

Hello Readers!
This is the Pre-Read thread for the October 2021 Catch-Up selection. This month we will be reading Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Why did you choose this book to read? What are your expectations in reading this book?

message 27: by Alex (new)

Alex Lubitz | 1 comments I will happily re-read this in October. This is one of my favorite books!

Cynthia | 664 comments I'm really excited to read this for October. It'll be my first time reading it and I think I'll love it.

message 29: by Samantha (last edited Sep 23, 2021 07:48AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Samantha | 539 comments I was excited for this one because I haven't read it before. I decided to start listening to the audio for this one and man, I think it was a mistake and I should have just read it. I know there are several narrator variations for this story so maybe I just picked the wrong one? Idk. I'm about 1/3 of the way through and am STRUGGLING for sure. Hopefully that changes and I'll have good things to say in the spoilers thread hahaha. If not, you'll hear my rants there instead lol.

message 30: by Laura (new)

Laura | 683 comments i am going to re-read this in october; i think the first time i read it i didn't really try to understand or appreciate the book so want to give it another go.

Samuel (kaisserds) | 90 comments Nice! I was planning to read it this year. I'm in.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I found this book a little bit of a slog to get through. :/

fleurette | 186 comments I will definitely read it this month, it will be my first time. I may go for the audiobook.

message 34: by Kesa (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kesa (mastoureh) | 21 comments I'm a few pages in and I really like the writing style even though I'm reading a translation. Wanted to read this for years now ever since I know what it's really about.

Cheyanne Leid | 8 comments I am through the letters and chapter 1. Interesting exposition, and I’m excited to keep going. I am enjoying the suspense of the author withholding information about something we have already seen, and giving little teasers.

Hannah (titchhx) | 80 comments I remember reading this in high school as part of coursework for English. I can remember the basic gist - especially after seeing it in the theatre with Benedict Cumberbatch as the monster!

Looking forward to seeing if I enjoy it as an adult.

message 37: by Nora (new) - added it

Nora (raccoonstudiez) | 22 comments I have been planning to read this for a while now, but I wanted to wait till the spooky season to read it.
First few pages in and already hooked thanks to the letters! Reminds me a little bit of Dracula in that way.

message 38: by Kyra (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyra Keeton | 277 comments I actually read this in my mom's Chemistry II class when I was a senior, it's her favorite and we love Mary Shelley. So I'm excited to read it now as an adult and during Halloween.

message 39: by Savy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Savy (savyyy) | 1 comments I read this book a few years ago, I remember it being one of my favorites! I am going to reread it before the end of October.
