In her family, women sometime end up with the ability to be a sort of window for the dead to walk through so they can reach the beyond. She falls for a local guy who works for her grandma and he's somehow part of the whole supernatural deal, though I don't remember how exactly. She first arrives in the middle of a snow storm in a skirt.
