Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments The first book in a series you haven't read before ... this one is tricky because what if I like the series and I can't fit the rest of the books in other prompts? Over in the steampunk thread, Nadine has lots of suggestions for steampunk books that are parts of a series. If you read one of those and like it, you could slot that here and then read the second for your steampunk book. Boom there's two prompts right there. You're welcome.

I think I'm finally going to read The Selection!! I "won" it from my library LAST YEAR (they give away books as prizes for their reading clubs sometimes) and the poor book has been sitting by my bedside ever since, gathering dust, begging to be read ...

Brandy (fantasyfan101) | 14 comments Soooo many choices here!! I will probably go with something from the epic fantasy genre!

Because I can't just let it go and settle on that one book that is probably the book I'm going to end up using for this category anyway ... I googled "series that I haven't read yet" (man, it's AMAZING the phrases you can google and get useful info! LOL) and I found the following helpful pages, that reminded me of many other series that I've been meaning to read but haven't started yet (these lists skew YA, because I suppose bloggers in general tend to skew YA):

(this reminded me, I've been meaning to give A Court of Thorns and Roses a go!)

(I think most of us have read all of these, though, based on comments I've seen here.)

(bit of a rehash of the first list)

Megan (mghrt06) | 546 comments What did we do before google existed?? haha

I have a lot here. I wish the category was the next book in an unfinished series, as I have a lot of those I want to finish. I typically like to marathon books. I don't like starting a series and then forget what happens before I have time to pick up the next one. That being said I have:

Reboot
The Book of Ivy
Ten Tiny Breaths
Shatter Me
The False Prince
Dorothy Must Die
These Broken Stars
Daughter of Smoke & Bone
The Demon King

EDIT 6-6-2017 Of course I read a book that wasn't even on my original list here lol.
Unspoken

Charlotte Weber | 270 comments I bought The Young Elites on a Kindle Daily Deal so I will be using it here. I also have the second book in the trilogy so hopefully I'll be able to fit it in somewhere too, but I doubt it.

poshpenny | 1916 comments If you are also doing the advanced list this year, and haven't read them all yet, this looks like the perfect year to read some Rick Riordan

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is perfect if you are late to the party.
The Lightning Thief - first book in a series you haven't read before
The Sea of Monsters - based on mythology
The Titan's Curse - involving a mythical creature
The Battle of the Labyrinth - red spine
The Last Olympian - novel set during wartime, or an audiobook, bought on a trip or used book sale

I've read those but not the five book spin-off series The Heroes of Olympus, which could be used much the same way.

I also haven't read the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series.
The Sword of Summer - first book
The Hammer of Thor - based on mythology
The Ship of the Dead - published in 2017

The is three books full of Egyptian gods. I did read these but don't recall if there was a solely mythic "creature." You could count most of the gods if you wanted, I suppose. Bast does spend time in both cat and human form.

There is a three book Percy Jackson & Kane Chronicles Crossover series which should work if you've already read everything else.

If you've read everything Riordon, Michael Scott has The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. It has 6 books, mostly about alchemy and magic but ancient gods and historical figures also appear. Characters in the series include Scathach, legendary Celtic warrior woman and martial arts teacher; The Morrigan, Crow Goddess of Irish mythology; Bastet, Egypian Cat Goddess; Hekate, Greek Goddess with Three Faces; etc. The second book has a red spine.

Thanks for breaking down these series like this!! I do love some Riordon. I was going to try something similar, but now I don't have to.

message 10: by Mike (last edited Nov 21, 2016 12:46PM) (new)

Mike | 443 comments I also like to recommend Storm Front by Jim Butcher, as the first book in The Dresden Files series. Harry Dresden is a wizard for hire in modern-day Chicago in a world where all kinds of supernatural things exist, only most mortals aren't aware of them. And that's how the wizarding community likes it.

I've heard it described as Harry Potter for adults, and I don't disagree. I've read all 16 books in the series and can't wait for number 17. Hopefully this year!

For me, this may be a good reason to finally start The Gunslinger.

I listened to the audio book of this, which is read by James Marsters! So, if there are any Buffy fans out there, this might be a good audiobook choice. (As it happens, I detested this book LOL! but I think I'm in the minority.)

"Sword of Summer" has the season in the title, too! If you wanted to dedicate 2017 to Riordan, you could fulfill a lot of categories with it.

message 12: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'd recommend The Merchant of Death. It's from the Pendragon series, which is more of a middle grade series but I find it's not very well-known.

message 13: by Lindi (last edited Nov 22, 2016 04:34PM) (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) This prompt is bugging me - only because I'm starting a few other new series through this challenge. And I don't like doubling up too much with series because I like to keep my reading list diverse.

Oh well, this is a good excuse as any to finally start some Phillipa Gregory. I need help on what order to read them in. I'm interested in her Cousins' War and Tudor Court series. Just not sure which one to start with. I also see now they are listed together as The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels.

Which series do I read first? Do I read them in chronological order, or by publication date? Or do I read the two series interchangeably? Help!

message 14: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 16 comments For Philippa Gregory, I would read them in chronological order. The Cousins' War series and the Tudor Court series can be read independently of each other but you could start with the first Cousins' War and read all the way through for a good overview of the history.

In the Woods (dublin murder squad)
The Cuckoo's Calling (would also work for Psuedonym)

I think I'm going to read The Gunslinger for this one, too. The Dark Tower movie with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey comes out in 2017, although it's supposed to be more of a sequel to the book series.

message 18: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'm having trouble narrowing down my options in for this one. I have it down to:

The Raven Boys
The Selection
A Court of Thorns and Roses
Throne of Glass
Red Queen

I'm leaning toward either The Raven Boys, or The Selection although I might try to fit in all of these books (or at least one of the two Sarah J. Maas books) somewhere between my 3 challenges (this one, GoodReads ATY and most likely BookRiot).

message 19: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Carey (nancycarey) I am going to read The Fire Sermon. Bought it this summer and I have yet to read it.

message 20: by Brenna (new)

Brenna (bhawleycraig) | 66 comments I'm going to do The Queen of the Tearling for this. Downloaded the first two on Kindle daily deals and saw the third is coming out like, now, so I'm ready to read them!

That's an excellent idea, Juantia, thanks!

message 22: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandaea129) Every Heart a Doorway (Fantasy - as I wrote in my review, recommended for anyone who wonders what happened when Alice came back from Wonderland

Still Life (Mystery - the series gets better with time)

Life From Scratch (Chick lit/Food)

Firefly Lane) (Women's Lit)

message 23: by Danielle (last edited Dec 14, 2016 06:32AM) (new)

Danielle (danimgill) | 45 comments I am newly obsessed with the Shades of Magic series and have been recommending it to everyone! It's about a magician named Kell who can travel through three alternate versions of London. The other main character, Delilah, is a kickass thief who wants to be a pirate and gets all the best lines.

The final book in the trilogy (A Conjuring of Light) comes out in February so that could be a "published in 2017" if you're looking for a series that fits multiple prompts.

(Also Rachel I see you up there recommending Pendragon! I LOVED that series when I was younger and no one else ever seems to talk about it)

message 24: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandaea129) Has anyone read the series with Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones? She's profiled in the January Book Page and it sounds interesting (a grim reaper private eye).

message 25: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) | 164 comments A lot of what I read for this depends on the results of Christmas. I snagged the first book of a Steampunk trilogy the other day (nearly bought the entire thing, but controlled myself) and told my boyfriend's brother that if he wanted to get me the other two for Christmas, I'd welcome it. I also sent him my ENTIRE book wishlist on Amazon, though, so who really knows...

But if I get those two for Christmas, then I'll likely slot A Study in Silks by Emma Jane Holloway in for this and the second book, A Study in Darkness, into the steampunk prompt. I'm not sure what I'd do with the third, since I don't think it fits any of the others.

The Dublin Murder Squad books are so good. I mean, really, SO GOOD. Highly recommended (but I'm not a librarian lol).

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've decided to read The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie for this one.

message 28: by Angela (new)

Angela | 11 comments I'm reading My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century for this and the 2nd book A Tale of Two Centuries for a book set in two different time periods. My oldest daughter thinks I'll like them.

message 29: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandaea129) Just read Feed and it was phenomenal. Can't wait to get the rest of the series. Highly recommended if you like dystopians.

I'm a librarian and I also recommend In the Woods ;-)
Plus a definite second on The Giver, one of my favorite books of all time.

Stephanie Cunningham | 8 comments Brenna wrote: "I'm going to do The Queen of the Tearling for this. Downloaded the first two on Kindle daily deals and saw the third is coming out like, now, so I'm ready to read them!"

Those are really good! I would say that if you are going to read the first one that you will probably want to read the second one soon after. It picks up right where the first one leaves so it might not be a good one to read after a lot of time has passed. Just my opinion! :) That's the problem I'm having with this prompt. I'm worried I'll read the first one, love it, and not be able to fit the others in anywhere.

I was thinking of In the Woods, it seems like it would be ok to read as a stand alone and it's been in my tbr for a while. Can anyone confirm that?

message 34: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 9554 comments Mod
Yes, In the Woods is fine to read as a standalone. The next book in the series has a few of the same characters, and occasionally mentions the events of the first book (in an oblique way) but it really has nothing to do with the events in the second book.

message 35: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments The cormoran strike books by Robert Galbraith (jk Rowling) are great standalone books. The first is the cuckoo's calling and if you do want to read a second one it can fit into the author who writes under another name category. And there's only 3 at the moment so I'm sure you can fit them in somewhere and if another comes out it could be a book that's released in 2017

message 36: by Kate (new)

Kate Williams | 0 comments The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett is the first Discworld book. I've never read any of them and this has been on my TBR list forever so finally going to get to it!

message 37: by JoAnna (new)

JoAnna | 84 comments For this, Mom and I are reading the series JK Rowling wrote under the name Robert Galbraith. They will fit into 3 different categories for the challenge :-)

I didn't want to finish A Gathering of Shadows and then have to wait *months* for the final book, so I'm saving it for 2017. I can't remember which challenge it's for, but there's a prompt to read a 2016 bestseller, and AGoS definitely works for that.

Anyway, yes, I think A Darker Shade of Magic is an excellent choice for this prompt.

I haven't read any of them. So, if I use the first book for "first book" and the second book for "best seller" ... what could the third book be used for? (I'm pretty sure I'm reading "Heartless" for my bestseller, though. But ADSoM is on my "must read soon" list, so I'll probably be reading that in 2017 too.)

message 40: by Maisys (new)

Maisys I hesitated a lot of which one I will pick for this category but I finally choose Everland ! This is a book I really really want to read but it isn't translated (yet ?) in France... Well, it would train me to read in english ! ;)

message 41: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 464 comments So, ADSoM for this prompt, AGoS for the 2016 bestseller prompt, then the final book for the 2017 release prompt.

message 42: by Kara (new)

Kara (madhatter360) | 54 comments I'm planning to read Parasite for this. The next two books in the series will fill "author who uses a psuedonym" and "author with a disability".

The Cuckoo's Calling - first book in a series
The Silkworm - author who uses a pseudonym
Career of Evil - main character with a disability (Strike is an amputee)
Cormoran Strike #4 Has a tentative 2017 release date.

Also, the narrator is wonder so they'd all work for the audio prompt.
