We had a good response to last year's challenge, so we'll run it again for 2017!

This challenge is all about the middle-grade books that members read throughout the year. The aim is to read one (or more) books with titles that start with each letter of the alphabet. As the year progresses, each participant can keep their list updated so it can give ideas to other members.

We do have a few steps and guidelines below to keep us on the right track.

1. Set yourself up a comment on this thread
2. List each letter of the alphabet (you can do this easily by copying and editing the first post, below).
3. As you read, add the titles under the appropriate letter (you can add any you've already finished this year--no going back to 2016!). You can list as many as you want under each letter, but there's no extra credit :)
4. The first letter of the title must match the listed letter
5. Drop the 'The'. eg. The Camelot Kids would be listed for C
6. Drop the 'A' eg. A Wrinkle in Time would be listed for W
7. Add a rating and review link if you dare. Like this - **** My review is here
8. Keep the books you list to Middle Grade. That's what we're all about.
9. Keep your list updated throughout the year by editing your comment
10. Visit regularly to check other lists, get ideas, and leave feedback.
11. For an added challenge, see if you can read your books in alphabetical order ... it's up to you.

SaraKat's 2017 A to Z List:
A: The Adoration of Jenna Fox(a futuristic science fiction about a girl who wakes up with amnesia and discovers some disturbing things), After the Ashes(absolutely lovely historical fiction about Krakatoa erupting and the Dutch and native people trying to survive), Abduction!(eh. A mystery that isn't really a mystery)
B: The Best Man(a wonderful book about a gay marriage from a child's point-of-view that proves that it is the adults that have problems with it, not the kids), Breathing Room(historical fiction about the 'retreats' that tuberculosis sufferers were sent to before there was a treatment. The teenage girl's wing is the site for this sad and tragic tale)
C: Counting by 7s(love this book about a little genius with a touch of OCD and her loss of one family and search for another), Children of the Great Depression(nonfiction that uses pictures of the era to help tell the story of the children)
D: Diary of a Wimpy Kid(blended novel with sketches and words in the diary entries--hilarious!)
E: Eruption(3rd in a series about a father and son duo that travels the continent working in natural disaster zones. Unexpectedly brutal in places.)
F: Flood: Mississippi, 1927(historical fiction--a pre-teen black girl and white boy try to survive the flood and racism), Fever 1793(historical fiction, in Philadelphia, a girl and her mother and grandfather are present during a deadly Yellow Fever outbreak. They must fight to stay alive), The Firefly Letters: A Suffragette's Journey to Cuba(a beautiful verse novel with poems from the point of view of a slave girl, a Swedish traveler, and the daughter of a slave master. Beautiful and heart-breaking)
G: The Gardener(excellent science fiction with plenty of adventure. Uses a lot of good science terms. Two boys rescue a girl and she isn't exactly what they thought), Guys Write for Guys Read(a collection of short stories to appeal to young males written by male authors. They are sometimes hilarious and sometimes heart-warming. It was an interesting peek into the minds of disgusting boys. )
H: Hidden(historical fiction set during medieval times and telling the story of the younger sister. I like her story much better than the older sister), How They Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous(Just as it sounds. The investigations into the deaths of famous personages throughout history)
I: The Invention of Hugo Cabret(a blended novel with some portions that are mostly illustrations about an orphan boy trying to fix something to be closer to his father and uncovering an interesting puzzle), Into the Wild(The first in the Warriors series about cat clans and their struggles with each other in the wild)
J: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key(A journey inside the mind of a boy with severe ADHD)
K: The Killing Sea(Fictionalized account of several families during the tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Great adventure and very sad)
L: Life As We Knew It(First in a series where the moon is hit by an asteroid and it moves closer to the Earth as a result. This causes widespread earthquake and volcanic activity and changes the world. One family's tale of survival)
M: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH(a favorite from my childhood. Superintelligent rats from a lab and an innocent mouse family asking them for help), Moominsummer Madness(eh. A fantasy about weird forest creatures surviving a flood and various very strange things happening. I think the book must have lost something in translation.)
N: Ninth Ward(A bit of paranormal second site is added to this Hurricane Katrina story of one block of people and their survival tales)
O: One Crazy Summer(historical fiction set in the 60s and telling the story of 3 black girls going to visit their mother that they don't know in California. Their mother is part of the Black Panther movement)
P: Proxy(first in the series, a great action novel set in a future dystopia where the income gap is huge and the haves buy the have nots to serve as proxies for their punishments), The Path of Names(a paranormal mystery set in a Jewish summer camp and delving into the Jewish religious tradition to set up a ghostly problem), Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science(nonfiction about the guy with the rod through his brain. A little too technical for interest I think), Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas(a fun nonfiction graphic novel about these three ladies. They intersect and their stories are pretty funny)
Q: The Quilt Walk (a lovely historical fiction about a 10 year old girl's trip across the prairie with a wagon train and the importance of quilts in the lives of the women around her
R: Rapunzel's Revenge(a graphic novel feminist take on the story. She saves herself and then goes about saving everyone else!)
S: Schooled(a poor kid from a cultish upbringing goes to public school and has no idea what is going on. very funny), Storm Runners(first in the series of which Eruption above is the last), The Surge(second in the Storm Runners series), Serafina's Promise(a girl's life in Haiti during the major earthquake and her dreams of becoming a doctor)
T: Toning The Sweep(a girl and her mother go to pack up her grandmother's house since she is dying and will be coming to live with them. Memories of the father and the grandfather abound and relationships bloom), The Teacher's Funeral : A Comedy in Three Parts(historical fiction from the turn of the century. Hilarious takes on the boys in a one room school house and their trials), Tour America: A Journey Through Poems and Art(a book of poetry about great places in the U.S. that the author has visited. Some are expected and others are new to me. Poems are simple and nice to read and the illustrations are great), Twelve Impossible Things Before Breakfast(a collection of fantasy short stories with a feminist bend to most. Some based on classics you will recognize like Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan)
U: Umbrella Summer(a girl suffered a loss in her family and isn't dealing with it well. A new neighbor may be just what she needed)
V: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader(the 3rd in the Narnia series. Lucy and Edmund go on another adventure with Prince Caspian--now King.)
W: The Westing Game(a mystery where everyone is a suspect and there is a lot of money at stake!),Wildfire Run(interesting take on a child of the president in deadly situations at Camp David. He and his friends use their smarts and talents to outwit the wildfire), The Wednesday Wars(this one made me uncomfortable at first, but it grew on me. A teacher-student relationship goes from frosty to warm as we learn more about each of them), Welcome to Dead House(first in the Goosebumps series. Recommended for a good middle grade scare.)
X: X-plosion(a Hardy Boys mystery, but upgraded for today's boys. They are undercover and solving a case of a saboteur at an extreme sports theme park. Lots of action and skateboarding.)
Y: A Year with Butch and Spike(realistic fiction about a teacher's pet who finds out that there are more important things than A's and awards.)
Z: Zel (A re-telling of the Rapunzel fairy tale)

MJ--Looks like you have at least one book on your list that's not Middle Grade. These lists are meant to be for middle grade books. Despite Flavia's age, I don't think there's anything about Alan Bradley's books that is for children, and I think he'd agree.

Rebecca -- I respectfully disagree. In my view they fall into the upper middle grade category (12-14 yrs) since despite touching on some adult themes they are still very much about a young girl transitioning out of childhood. However, I will remove the book from my list.

I enjoyed Out of My Mind as well. I sincerely hope that none of the children in my school are suffering as she did with terrible teachers!

😊Mine's an alpaca! I have 138 - teacher librarian/ alpaca farmer! Like guinea pigs, they're from South America. 😊

I have been known to tell stories to any young ones that have been born prem etc - with them sitting on my knee of course! Great for bonding!

I read the first couple of chapters of my friend Noelle's book to my dear guinea pig Kevin the other night. I think it helped him relax. :)

I think my favorites were The Wednesday Wars, Umbrella Summer, The Teacher's Funeral : A Comedy in Three Parts, Proxy, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Counting by 7s, and Fever 1793.
