Yes, racial discrimination is very much still an issue in the USA.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what things could help? The book ended up saying the voucher program had been one "success", as it got rid of low income housing communities (projects) and let the people with the vouchers into other communities, but even that is not a perfect answer.

Irene | 4526 comments Vouchers would not do anything to prevent landlords refusing to rent to or show apartments to African American tenants or those whith prior evictions. If you are born into an impoverished family with no stability, a family that is forced to move frequently, has no time and energy to get you an education, no extended support system and of the wrong race, it is nearly impossible to break the cycle.

Irene | 4526 comments Thank you for thoughtfully reading this book with me. I was enriched by your experiences with this issue and your passion for justice for the most vulnerable among us. Thank you for your thoughts and insights as we read this. I know I want to pass my book along to have others read it.

Sadly, I think those that would most benefit from reading this book are those that are probably least likely to read this book.

Nancy Reading an article for NPR this morning. This book won a Pulitzer for general nonfiction! Interesting.

Nancy Just got my daily Smithsonian email and immediately saw this article about an exhibit based on this book. It seemed to be something that made such an impression on all of us.
