Kate S | 6459 comments Please post any questions about the Awards of the Decade sub-challenge in this thread.

Ed Lehman | 2638 comments Does the decade have to be something like the 1960s? or could it be any 10 consecutive years such as 1955-1964? oops...nevermind...I just noticed the example.

Any 10 consecutive years will work.

Sarah A. (cera_az) | 107 comments If you choose the decade, can the awards be any awards or is there a list to choose from?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Sarah wrote: "If you choose the decade, can the awards be any awards or is there a list to choose from?"

As long as the award appears on the GR book page, you may choose any award.

Although sometimes overwhelming, these pages might be of some help for stirring some thoughts.

/award

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments I might add: that page is searchable, but the search is case sensitive. So, "Edgar" works, but "edgar" does not.

message 7: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2638 comments Is it possible to have awards added to the GR page? I noticed several NY Drama Critics Awards are not noted on the GR page...although some others are, for example A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard won in 1985-1986.

message 8: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2638 comments Also...the California Book Awards has Gold and Silver Awards....do Silver Awards winners qualify. I can't find that the gold and silver categories are similar to Olympics Gold and Silver (that is 1st and 2nd place)?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Ed wrote: "Is it possible to have awards added to the GR page? I noticed several NY Drama Critics Awards are not noted on the GR page...although some others are..."

I am willing to do some small amount of work on some awards. Please ask in the librarian thread.

ok..thanks.
New Question... I'm considering Dear Nobody by Berlie Doherty which is listed as YA on the GR page but not listed at all on the Brooklyn Library page...but has a lower than 800 Lexile. It won the 1991 carnegie Medal. Does it qualify here?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Ed wrote: "but not listed at all on the Brooklyn Library page."

If BPL doesn't have it, it cannot be classified as YA anything and the Lexile rule does not apply.

Stand by for further on the NYC Drama Critics award. Some awards for performances - like the Tony's - do not conform to GR standards. I think the Drama Circle is OK, but I have asked for clarification.

Only the California Gold qualifies for Awards of the Decade.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Keep in mind that all categories of an award qualify as one award. If you choose the Pulitzer, as in the example, note that Fiction and Biography are the same award. This may help you when, for whatever reason, an award was not presented in a particular year (or the book in the category you are looking at isn't available), but be alert for it, also, if you are choosing the 10 different awards option.

message 15: by Denise (new)

Denise | 1802 comments I'd like to verify that the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction qualifies for the subchallenge. They designate each year, and there doesn't seem to be any distinction making one higher than the other. I just want to make sure I can use either book designated for each year.

message 16: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3050 comments I'm thinking The Night Watch will work for published year 1998 even though award is awarded in 2009 (Stalker Award for Best Translated Novel)?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Tien wrote: "I'm thinking The Night Watch will work for published year 1998 even though award is awarded in 2009 (Stalker Award for Best Translated Novel)?"

It is the year of the award that qualifies, not year published. Many awards are given in the year following publication, but there is no standard.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Denise wrote: "I'd like to verify that the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction qualifies for the subchallenge. They designate two winners each year, and there doesn't seem to be any distinction making one h..."

Yes. We will accept either title for a given year.

message 20: by Denise (new)

Denise | 1802 comments About the Oldies bonus for the subchallenge: the description says "+5 Oldies (published before 1992)". (1992 wouldn't count)

But the main RWS challenge is using "1942-1992" for the first tier of oldies. (1992 does count)

Not trying to be nitpicky--the Flannery O'Connor award started in 1983, so I'll be reading through 1992, and both 1992 winners were published in 1992. Just wondering if 1992 will count for Oldies or not.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2582 comments If we chose the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Choice award, can we pick any book that won in each year? Do we have to stick with the same genre each year?

1992 counts as the first oldest year for this bonus. Sometimes we get our tongues in the wrong pew.

:) Thanks for your replies to both of my questions. I love short story collections and am looking forward to reading a lot of new-to-me authors. Great subchallenge!

Ed, at least 2 of us who work mostly in awards think this one complies with GR standards. But it's a big award, and I don't have time to do it in the short run. Are you planning on using it for the all 10 option, or just one. Either way, let me know where I can help, and next month when things simmer down a bit, I can go back and try to fill in the blanks.

Ed Lehman | 2638 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Ed wrote: "Is it possible to have awards added to the GR page? I noticed several NY Drama Critics Awards are not noted on the GR page...although some..."

ok...now that you added the Pulitzer to A Soldier's Play...I added a different book that won a Pulitzer to my list...but that same play also won the 1982 NY Drama Critics Award...but that isn't on the GR page. I assume that it doesn't matter that my list has two Pulitzer Award winners as long as I can cite a different award won by one of the works?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Ed wrote: "I assume that it doesn't matter that my list has two Pulitzer Award winners as long as I can cite a different award won by one of the works? "

No, wrong assumption. The award must be on the GR book page. (And yes, if I'm now awake enough to put a different interpretation to your question, a work may have won an award already on your list as long as you are claiming it for a different award. I have several on my own list that way, and jockeyed around to get what I needed.)

I have added the NYC Drama Critic's to A Soldier's Play.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1697 comments Do these count?
Readers' Choice awards?
Translation awards? If so, does the book have to be read in the translation?
Audio book awards? If so do we have to listen to the audio book?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments itpdx wrote: "Do these count?

Yes, to all of them, although I personally shudder at the Readers Choice awards because they are more vanity awards. At the present time, GR is allowing them, and we will go with all awards on a GR book page.

You can read any edition of the book that has won the award. As above, you need to slot it in the year of the award.

Kathleen (itpdx) (itpdx) | 1697 comments Whew! One book I have on my shelves won an award for a Greek translation.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2582 comments I am reposting this because my question wasn't answered
If we chose the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Choice award, can we pick any book that won in each year? Do we have to stick with the same genre each year?

I'm sorry, I did miss this. Yes, you can read any book that won a GR Choice, and you can change categories. But if you read for more than one year, you will have to use the all same option.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2582 comments I don't understand the "if you read for more than one year, you will have to use the all the same option" part.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments You can read any of the categories of the GR Choice awards, but they all count as reading the GR Choice award. So If you read one for 2010, and one for 2016, you won't have 10 different.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2582 comments Oh I see, I was going to do all the same award option

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Oh I see, I was going to do all the same award option"

Ok, the GR Choice award has not been around for 10 years, so you shouldn't think about using that one.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2582 comments *sigh* Okay,

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments What's the verdict on short story collections where one story included won an award? Are they fair game as long as it's listed on the book's page? I don't have any planned right now, but I saw a couple where it was listed as (for example) O Henry Award for "insert story title here."

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Sam wrote: "What's the verdict on short story collections where one story included won an award? Are they fair game as long as it's listed on the book's page? I don't have any planned right now, but I saw a co..."

There has been discussion in the librarian's group on that very issue. Personally, I am against GR listing them that way, but I have been overruled. As long as the award appears on the GR book page, you're good with it. However, I caution you on ones like these because they could go astray. You may wish to log here the specific title and the award just in case.

Yes - on the Canon, YA/Lexile rules do not apply.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Assignment is YA assignment. However, our recently posted exception is a volume that includes more than one title or story. So, with that your "and other stories" creates an exception to the Lexile rule and works for the sub-challenge. If you would be so kind as to remind me when you post ...

The ALA Alex Award is given to ten books every year. None is designated as the prime "winner"--they are all ten the winner of the award. Could we choose any of these books for this challenge?

Yes, but be careful with this award as a lot of these are YA which may have a Lexile below 800.
