It's April! Spring has sprung! Whatcha reading during those April showers?

message 3: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3447 comments I'm reading Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson and on my eReader I've got the upcoming contemporary group read Range of Ghosts by Elizabeth Bear

message 4: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Done with The Collapsing Empire (review ). I'd say wait for sequels in the series are available before starting this one.

message 5: by Kivrin (new)

Kivrin | 542 comments Finished Dragon Champion which I really enjoyed. I'm going to search out the other two books in the series.

Now, I'm reading The End is Nigh. It's short stories set in the time just before an apocalyptic event. There is supposed to be another book with stories set during the apocalypse and another one with stories in post-apocalyptic worlds. I thought that was a neat idea.

Andreas wrote: "Done with The Collapsing Empire (review here). I'd say wait for sequels in the series are available before starting this one."

Interesting. Scalzi's been writing those serialized ebooks, Human Division & End of All Things. Maybe the idea of serialization is too ingrained now.

message 7: by Poonam (new)

Poonam | 34 comments Well, I'm working on The Lies of Locke Lamora and then I have The Well of Ascension and Red Rising in the queue. And then we'll see what audiobooks come my way.

message 8: by NekroRider (new)

NekroRider | 459 comments Just finished a lighthearted mystery novel called Nine Lives to Die that I started in March. Was good fun. My next read is gonna be The Haunting of Hill House, which I've been meaning to read earlier this year and am finally getting to. Excited about it.

Not sure what I'll plan to read after that. The last few weeks I've been preferring quicker reads with a good flow just because my main reading time is on the subway or before bed these days. I really hate leaving off chapters right in the middle instead of finishing them, so any book at this point that has chapters over 10 pages just ain't working for me lol

message 9: by Davy (new)

Davy | 47 comments I started with The Lies of Locke Lamora when I was about 3/4 done in The Gathering Storm, so I'll be finishing both this month. Not sure yet what I'll be reading after that, probably WoT 13 (without alternating with another book this time).

message 10: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Done with New Spring, the Prequel to WoT. I don't know why I haven't read it, yet. I really liked the re-visit to that world.

Currently reading Mightier than the Sword by K.J. Parker. Just awesome. Only that hefty price tag... I have to say that I'm glad that I snapped it from netgalley.

message 11: by NekroRider (new)

NekroRider | 459 comments Sped through The Haunting of Hill House faster than I thought and really, really liked it. I actually enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. The book actually ended up being a lot funnier than I expected too, obviously intentionally so. The characters were just ridiculously silly in a way that brought so much more flavour to the book and the dialogue was great. Really fun/funny, spooky and spine-tingling book.

Now on to So Long Been Dreaming: Postcolonial Science Fiction and Fantasy. Have read the first story, which was pretty interesting.

message 12: by Brendan (new)

Brendan (mistershine) | 743 comments Finished reading: Pilot X, and the Hugo-nominated short stories You’ll Surely Drown Here If You Stay and A Fist of Permutations in Lightning and Wildflowers. Surely Drown gets a 5/5 from me. Wild West Necromancy!

Currently reading: Memory of Water

Side note: goodreads seems now to be sending out an email that say "Congratulations! You finished [X]" whenever i mark a book as read. This is incredibly annoying and condescending. I know I finished a book, goodreads, i'm the one that marked it finished. You don't need to tell me.

message 13: by N. (new)

Just got done reading GateFather by Orison Scatt Card. Very good ending to a good trilogy

Glad I'm not the only one that had that reaction to that new "feature".

Yeah, it seems silly. Not really certain what action they are so eager for me to take.

There is an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom; I've clicked it, but won't know for sure until I finish something else.

I finished Central Station, which wasn't to my taste (interesting future world, but nobody interesting does anything interesting in it.) Not surprising, since I didn't like either of the short stories I'd read from that world, either. Ah, well.

(Also finished Lies of Locke Lamora & Caves of Steel re-reads for group discussions.)

Now starting on Scalzi's latest, The Collapsing Empire, which is typical breezy snarky Scalzi so far.

Completely 100%. It's just plain weird...

Currently for April, I'm reading a new Australian fantasy book Valentine (which is actually set in Australia for once, I don't know why but Australian fantasy authors almost always set their book in European type settings). After that I'm hoping to get my act into gear for the Caves of Steel book and get into the group discussion :)

message 19: by Annie (new)

Annie London (annielondon) | 3 comments I have set only one goal this month, simply because of the book size, excessive descriptions and unneccesary plots (opinion based on previous books in trilogy)...

So, I'm finishing Roth's Carve the Mark and I'm diving right into the last book of the Passage trilogy, Cronin's The City of Mirrors.

Hopefully, I'll finish it by the end of the month... Fingers crossed!

message 20: by ³§±ðá²Ô (new)

³§±ðá²Ô | 6 comments I just finished Dune which was s random pickup, but was definitely a good start to the month.

I jumped straight into The Waking Fire which has looked pretty positive so far.

After that, I may just be tempted to pick up Red Sister because I'm hyped - I can't actually remember the first book I bought on release, but this might be the one to break that!

And assuming I've a bit of time left, I'll probably jump back into Chronicles of the Black Company as I really enjoyed the first book in the collection. Neal Asher has also been added to my list recently, so he might make a guest appearance if I'm craving sci-fi.

message 21: by Silvana (last edited Apr 06, 2017 06:45AM) (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Gonna be a busy month at work but hopefully I have time to finish Shadow & Claw (starting now), The Stars Are Legion, and if I have time in between, Chains of Command. I think there are two other next in series (Luna: Wolf Moon is one) but I have yet to procure them so maybe later.

message 22: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Humphrey (one_mrshum) | 39 comments Ok guys, I'm a little all over the place and I haven't been reading all week because I don't know where to start. And being in here isn't helping because I keep finding books that I might like and adding them to my "want to read" list.

I'm thinking about starting Way of Kings.
I'm also in the middle of Game of Thrones (I might wait a bit to finish, I need to reread book four)
I'm also wanting to read the Crestomanci series (Dianna Wynne Jones)
I'm currently reading a book for a review request.
I started rereading the Thrawn trilogy, finished the first book. My library doesn't have the other two. Dumb.
I'm itching to reread Harry Potter but I want to buy a new set first, one of my paperbacks is missing, and a section of one fell off and I can't find it after we moved. >.> They were second hand.

message 23: by Andreas (new)

Andreas K.J. Parker's Mightier than the Sword is really great (review) but it comes with a harsh price tag.

message 24: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3447 comments Rachel wrote: "I'm also wanting to read the Crestomanci series"

Those were fun, I enjoyed them

Rachel Humphrey (one_mrshum) | 39 comments Andrea wrote: Those were fun, I enjoyed them"

I've read some of her other series, but started with Howl's. I had watched the anime since I was a wee little, but the books are that much better. Glad I found them! I love how she "does" magic. :)

message 26: by Brendan (new)

Brendan (mistershine) | 743 comments G33z3r wrote: "I finished Central Station, which wasn't to my taste (interesting future world, but nobody interesting does anything interesting in it."

That was my experience with that book too. A cool premise in search of a plot.

message 27: by Hillary (new)

Hillary Major | 436 comments Andreas wrote: "K.J. Parker's Mightier than the Sword is really great (review) but it comes with a harsh price tag."

I'm hoping for another anthology like Academic Exercises ... still a high price tag, but you get more than one story/novella. I do have a couple of Parker novellas that I picked up in paperback but haven't gotten to yet -- The Last Witness & The Devil You Know

I just finished a re-read of Ancillary Justice, and I've started Ancillary Sword for the first time. So far, it's living up to expectations pretty well.

I really, really, really need to get around to reading the Howl books because I love that anime to pieces. In fact I love the anime so much I'm a bit reluctant to be disappointed by the books :) Same reason why I have yet to read Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn.

message 29: by Michael (last edited Apr 07, 2017 01:17PM) (new)

Michael | 152 comments I just finished Patricia Briggs new Mercy Thompson book, Silence Fallen. Very good book! After that, I've started reading John Scalzi's first book in a new series, The Collapsing Empire. So far so good!

message 30: by Caitlin (last edited Apr 06, 2017 07:03PM) (new)

Caitlin (cait_coy) I've just started reading The Invisible Library, which I'm really enjoying so far. As someone who works in a library, the secret agent for an alternate reality Library concept has been really fun.

I've been wondering what KJ Parker was up to. He'd been doing monthly installments of The Two of Swords, then suddenly delayed it for over a year. I was worried he'd been taken ill.

message 32: by Andreas (new)

Andreas It's been a while since I last read something from Harlan Ellison - this time, I re-read "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman ().

message 33: by Eric (new)

Eric Lozada | 6 comments I'm gonna read the Old Man's War Series. just stared book 2 today

message 34: by Luiz (new)

Luiz Right now I'm reading The Lie Tree, which despite it's interesting premise of a tree that feeds on lies, is kinda boring. Buuut since it's a short book I'll try to finish it.

After that I'm reading Horus Rising, so I'll finally enter the Warhammer 40k universe (30k in this case, i guess?). Having high hopes for this one, because the setting looks so interesting!

Closing the month, if everything goes as planned, I will finish the Broken Empire Trilogy with Emperor of Thorns.

message 35: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 529 comments As usual I have WAY to many books on my table for the month.
They include The Stars are Legion _ our pick hooray!
The Collapsing Empire
A conjuring of Light
Seven Surrenders
And several from 2016 I'm trying to catch up with :
The Bands of Mourning
A Closed and Common Orbit
Updraft
Borderline
...and several others.....

message 36: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 529 comments Oh! and I just finished the first Volume of Saga - which is my first foray into adult graphic novels (due to hugo popularity)

message 37: by Ty (new)

Ty | 4 comments I decided to read a YA which I don't usually do, but it is turning out to be very good. It is the Percy Jackson Trilogy. I'm also going to start The Kingkiller Chronicle series later on this month after I finish Percy Jackson.

message 38: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn Started a buddy read of The Dragonbone Chair.

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (dragonsandzombies) ³§±ðá²Ô wrote: "I just finished Dune which was s random pickup, but was definitely a good start to the month.

I like your choices! I read Dune in the start of the year and liked it, although I was a bit overwhelmed at the start. I also want to continue with The Black Company, as the first book was really entertaining!

I am currently reading 3 different books.
Misery by Stephen King, which is pretty disturbing, but I like it so far. I heard the movie adaptations is not too bad either, I will get to that after I finish.

Then I am reading something shorter, The Tenth Power by Kate Constable, which is the conclusion of a traditional Fantasy trilogy. I like it much more than book 2 so far. It doesn't seem like a 'filler' and develops the storyline.

I am also re-reading A Cavern of Black Ice by J.V. Jones because I've been thinking about it for a while now. I read it years ago and was really impressed but didn't continue because the series didn't seem to go anywhere... Well, it's still not finished, but I hope by the time I catch up it will be.

Also on my to read-list for this month is The Waking Fire by Anthony Ryan. It's already sitting on my shelf :)

message 40: by James (new)

James | 4 comments Just finished Snow Crash--moving onto Anathem tonight.

message 41: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Sarah wrote: "I am also re-reading A Cavern of Black Ice by J.V. Jones"

This book has come out pretty often in groups' discussions lately....

Rachel wrote: "Ok guys, I'm a little all over the place and I haven't been reading all week because I don't know where to start. And being in here isn't helping because I keep finding books that I might like and ..."

I plan to read The Way of Kings next month so if you do the same then we can discuss in the old discussion thread (since the group has discussed it before)

message 42: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3447 comments Finished Green Mars...I enjoyed it but it had the same flaw as the first one, people spending a lot of time just moving from one place to another, and while the descriptions of the planet are important, we spent way too much time pointing out "hey look, there's lichen over there"

Since I have a bunch of stuff planned for May already, going to get a head start on The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe. Already about 50 pages in and I'm definitely interested.

message 43: by Richard (new)

Richard | 1 comments Just finished "Shadows of Self" and am well into "Bands of Mourning". Really loving the Mistborn series.

Having just finished the first 2 books of the Stormlight Archives in March I am on a Brandon Sanderson roll. Plan to get through Warbreaker", "Elantris", and "Arcanum Unbounded" before "Oathbreaker" comes out.

message 44: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Richard, that are literally thousands of pages of Sanderson! I'm currently reading The Well of Ascension from him - but after that I need some different digest.

message 45: by Poonam (new)

Poonam | 34 comments I'm reading Well of Ascension too! but yeah I listen to audiobooks so I get a little diversity in there as a result.

I'm listening to Sector Eight right now, which is a litRPG novel. Not a genre I'm normally into, but it's really good so far.

message 46: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3447 comments Finished Shadow of the Torturer, will reserve comments until the group discussion starts. Technically that's only half of the group read though. But first, I want to maintain my momentum of reading one installment of the Mallorean a month. In this case it's number 4, Sorceress of Darshiva by David Eddings

message 47: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments I just finished Linesman by S.K. Dunstall. It's a new SF book that opens up an interesting universe & new type of technology. It's the first of a trilogy, possibly series & the author's first book. It had a few warts, but I quite enjoyed it & gave it a 4 star review here:
/review/show...

message 48: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) I feel like I'm the only one who's really slow in reading Shadow and Claw. I got stuck then reverted to continuing the Frontlines series and I just finished the last published one, Fields of Fire. LOVE this series alot, definitely how military SF should be written.

I am also trying some of the free Tor's Hugo-nominate works. That Game We Played During the War is excellent. Currently reading The Art of Space Travel.

message 49: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 3447 comments Finished reading Sorceress of Darshiva, that went pretty quick. Back now the The Claw of the Conciliator

message 50: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikekeating) | 242 comments So I finished Moonraker, and I began The Lost World. I had been holding off on reading it so it could be fresher in my mind in case it wound up as the monthly read at some point, but I have been wanting to get around to this one for nearly a year now.
