Ed | 33 comments How many hours a day do you read? Does it depend on the day? And where do you like to read? Anywhere? Or a great chair, in bed, outside?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

i usually only get about 2 hours reading of a night. Usually read in the kitchen away from the TV

message 3: by Jane (new)

Jane | 221 comments I try to read about 4 hours a day. I don't watch evening TV - which puts me way
behind the curve socially - but I'd much rather read.

message 4: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1956 comments When I am in reading mode (which thank goodness I seem to be in right now) I read first thing in the morning in bed for perhaps an hour, while I eat lunch and dinner, and for a couple of hours in the afternoon or evening. I know I'm in reading mode when I take my book with me to pickup my mail. I live on the 4th floor and I read in the elevator.

message 5: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Definitely depends on the day. I get almost no reading done on Monday or Thursday, as those are my longest work days (from one job straight to another), but on other days I might read anywhere from 100-300 pages -- which greatly depends on the book/author's writing style.
Most of my reading is done at home, either in living room or bedroom, but I also read on the bus, during breaks, or even while standing in long lines.

Libby (libbyou) A very nice article. Good hints, but I'm lot completely sure I want to read as if it's a job. I did however find a few book suggestions on the GQ website (not one I regularly visit), to add to my "to be read".

same here...almost get NOTHING done thru the week due to work, but then Friday thru Sunday really do 90% of my reading. out on patio with a drink in hand and just tear thru it.

message 9: by Jennie (new)

Jennie Bed is by far the best place for me. Before going to sleep is the most usual time, as usually too busy before to justify reading. Except Sunday afternoons, that feels allowable somehow.

message 10: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1956 comments When I was young I used to drive to work with a book on my lap. Every red light I hit I'd pick up the book and hold it high enough so I could see the red tail lights in front of me and I would read. Two of the lights I had to go through were very long because they were three ways red and one green at a time. I'm sure anyone who saw me probably thought I was crazy but no close calls, it worked.

message 11: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 28 comments I totally agree with the article that JennE sent when it says to QUIT reading a book if you don't like it. There is no shame in putting it aside for now because maybe later on it will be just the thing. Reading time is too important to waste on a bad book.

message 12: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Mclaren | 293 comments So interesting to see everyone's comments. Like Jane, I don't usually watch evening TV (although I have been caught up by Netflicks and the Father Brown series recently). I usually read at night before going to bed, but then it all depends on how good the book is. There are some that I can walk away from for a couple of hours and no problem but there are others that feel like I'm leaving a friend in crisis and I almost feel compelled to read before getting ready for work, carry it along and sneak it in during work breaks. And I've gotten in the habit of carrying a book in the purse 'just in case.' And there have been times at doctor's appointments, etc., where its come in handy.

I used to force myself to read a book to its conclusion even if I didn't like it, but these days there are far too many books I want to read to waste my time on those I don't.

message 13: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 2 comments It depends for me - if I am working a lot, then sometimes only 30 minutes to an hour a day. If I have the day off, or a little extra time, usually 2 to 3 hours a day.

message 14: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) I "read/listen" to an audio book during my commute (about 1.5 to 2 hrs per day, depending on traffic & weather)

I read during my lunch hour, in the morning and at night ... probably totals about 1.5 hours during a weekday. Of course I can read more on days off work ... but I seem to spend more of that time doing other things.

Oh my. I wish I had dedicated reading time each day. I read when and where I can. Audiobooks carry me through my Mon-Fri drive back and forth to work. Paper and digital books are picked up every free minute I have when I'm at home (and not surfing the internet or monitoring this group, or tweeting!).

message 16: by Gal (new)

Gal (galpod) | 5 comments I read every evening in bed, I aim for at least 20 pages. I also read when my daughter is in ballet and I'm waiting for her, and sometimes in the afternoon if I can. But my reading-for-pleasure has increased now that I'm doing less academic reading 🙂

message 17: by Ana (new)

Ana Veciana-Suarez | 1 comments I read every night before bed. During the day I carry a book with me at all times and have been known to read at doctor's waiting room, in line at the bank, waiting to pick up grandchildren, in the car when my husband is driving etc.

message 18: by Angela M (new)

Angela M It definitely depends on the day and what else is going on - appointments , house hold chores, grocery shopping , etc . I read at the gym two or three days a week while I'm on the treadmill and bike . I read almost every evening, unless we're out. I sometimes read in the morning when having coffee while hubby is still sleeping. If there is not a lot going on I'll read some during the day . I would guess an average of a 2+ hours per day again depending - sometimes less , sometimes more .
I bring my my kindle to dr & dentist appointments to read while waiting. On long trips when my husband is driving I'll read in the car . I am retired but still there are a lot of other things in my life - my husband, my house to tend to, grandkids, but I do my best to get my reading time in !

Same for me. I agree, there's something about Sunday afternoons that makes it ok.

message 20: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 8 comments Monday through Friday, I read about an hour before bed. Debate about making more time for reading. During the week, mornings are filled up with writing from about 5:30-7:00 a.m., then time to get ready for my banking job. I work anywhere from 8-10 hours a day, come home, work out, cook dinner, clean up, watch Dr. Oz (maybe here is where I could add more reading time:) ), then read before bed.

message 21: by Jackie (new)

Jackie I am in three face to face book clubs and I find that it is easier for me to remember the discussion books if I read them very close to the time of the actual meeting. Also, I can justify spending a day or two just reading because I MUST finish the book before the meeting.

Other times, I read between one and two hours a day.

message 22: by idiffer (new)

idiffer | 17 comments I read about five hours a day (it's both sad and wonderful to not have a job, lol). Reading in bed is my favorite way.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

At the ABSOLUTE, VERY LEAST, 100 pages a day. This usually adds up to one hour and 40 minutes per day, and on good days it turns out to be 50 minutes a day.

message 24: by Brittany (last edited Oct 25, 2017 10:50PM) (new)

Brittany Laccetti | 2 comments I try to carry a book with me at all times and pick it up whenever I can. I have two small children, so I need to sneak time in whenever I can. I used to spend 5-10 minutes of my "here-and-there" time on social media and I realized it was a huge waste of time! You can actually see how much time you are spending on each app on your phone and there was one week that I spent 14 hours on Facebook! I was so appalled that I deleted the app from my phone and made a promise to myself that I would pick up a book instead. In 14 hours I could have read 2-3 books! I have been flying through books now with all the free time I have from my social media break.

Which is one of the reasons I refuse to join FB, no matter how much some friends/family badger me. I don't need that sort of time-suck in my life.

message 26: by Mickey (new)

Mickey (liongoddess) | 470 comments Brittany, that's one of the numerous reasons I gave up Facebook! I wasn't getting in any reading or cross stitch (my other passion) time.

I read whenever I can. I work 3rd shift at a police department (I'm a civilian), so I can often get a book in a couple of nights a week. I read a LOT on my off-days.

Prefer physical books, but my Kindle has come in handy for doctor visits & sitting in the hospital with my dad at various times.

My favorite reading/stitching spot is the recliner end of my couch. It's referred to as the Happy Chair, and my favorite time of year for enjoying it is the winter. Sitting with my feet up & the space heater blowing on them, books/sewing project in hand and one or both of my cats snuggled into me is perfectly blissful!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I read for about 2 hours each night. I'm a really slow reader so don't get many pages read in that time. If it's a really great book I'll leave everything else and read all weekend.

message 28: by R. (new)

R. Vazquez (rgarciavazquez) | 17 comments Since I've started writing full time, it's been harder to set aside time to read. Tired brain by the time evening rolls around, but I'm forcing myself to read at least an hour to 90 minutes each night before nodding off.
