The number of people doing the challenges is way down. Are there enough of you interested to keep doing them or do you want to call it quit on them? We've had a really good run with this thread--going on 10 years now, but is everyone getting burned out on them?

Maybe I'll go back and pull up some of those real early challenges, and we'll see about luring some others either into the fold in the first place, or BACK into it. :o) But we started having to really look around for new ones because people were complaining about always doing the same challenges. Well, except for a few, like the always popular clean up the tbr pile read that we always do in December. I think that one's BEEN the December challenge as long as this thread has been going. . . .

But I'll check into it and see what we were doing back for those first few years.

Maybe recycle a few for the months that we still haven't gotten anything plugged in to this year.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 184 comments Ann, That sounds like a great plan, let's hope it helps.

I was wondering if everyone in this thread had seen you have the May thread up. Because it looks like only 4 people are currently signed up to attempt it.

That was the reason that I posted this thread. IF only 4 people are going to do it, I am wondering if it's really worth it. but more than 4 have said that they are interested.

But if we can't get a few more, this thread is going to have to bite the dust. So get out there people and carpe aorta. (Don't you think that is a much better saying for fans of paranormal than carpe diem?) And drag in your friends and family.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 184 comments Going to see if I can get a few people to join us with the bellow message. Fingers crossed.

Hey Kate,
I know you read a lot of Paranormal or Urban Fantasy I have a Monthly Challenge that I would love for you to join. Each month and every year the challenges change.
This month's themes are:
~ Cinco de Mayo
~ Mother's Day
~ Armed Forces Day
It would be great to have you join us for this challenge. It is organized to accommodate up to 10 books a month, but any reading amount works, whatever your reading level is you are welcome.

Brittany (emeraldsea28) | 2 comments Hey guys, I'm new to this group and this is one of the topics that caught my eye initially and made me really excited. So I know I'm new but I vote yes!

♥Lynn ♥ | 519 comments I think there is low participation because no one re-posts their progress as a new post. It looks like no one is doing them, but people are completing them quickly. I miss the discussion on a good book. I personally didn't do one this month because I knew my daughter was graduating and wouldn't have time. I love the challenges! They can be a lot of fun. I've learned of so many books that I never would have heard about via the challenges.

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 184 comments Last year we had one that was 10 different series. That was interesting to see all the different Paranormal & Urban Fantasy series.

It is hard to come up with original ideas. I know Ann keeps trying and I and some others tried to help last year and this year. Some of them have been more successful than others.

If you have any original ideas I am sure Ann would welcome and if this challenge stays active they can be incorporated into next years rotation because I think she has this year covered.

♥Lynn ♥ | 519 comments I personally love challenges but sometimes I don't get no where near finished. What if we set up the challenges where everyone could choose the number of books they read that month. Offer 10 books but allow readers to choose how many they could read, that way those who can't read 10 each month can still feel like they can participate.

A few of my favorite challenges:
Feature Creature- 2 shifters, 2 vamps, 2 fae, 2 magic users, 2 demon
A-Z author or MC name
Genre type- PNR, UF, Slayer, Dystopia, Warriors, etc
New To Me- New to me author, sub genre, creature, etc
Pick it For Me- Where other challenge members pick the next read from the selected shelf

I believe that she sort of does. I think they started years ago with more like 5 books and upped the number a few times after that. But I am fairly certain I have read Ann post that people can choose to read however many they want. So if they want to read 5 then cut each group in half.
So instead of 2 xyz books read 1 and instead of 4, read 2.
:-)

Feature Creature
A-Z author or MC name
New To Me

These three I like also

Genre type- PNR, UF, Slayer, Dystopia, Warriors, etc
I don't remember doing this one in this group. But in the last few years, I have missed a month or two.

Pick it For Me- Where other challenge members pick the next read from the selected shelf
This one I personally am not a big fan of.
I do however like the one where you "read with a friend" so look at books other in the group have read previously and see if you can find some new stuff. (as if I don't do that almost ever month. lol!!! but still fun)

♥Lynn ♥ | 519 comments Monica wrote: "Lynn those were my favorites too. Its a big variety and I think thats the draw. :)"

I agree, the more wiggle room to choose from, helps me not feel as pressured to read something I didn't want to read.

Other ideas:
Size Matters- read a book with <100; <200; >300 >400
My Shelfie Challenge- All books come from your To Read shelf
(This one could have several different books to choose from for example: a book you chose because of the cover; previously started; book turned into movie; book you added because you saw it in a challenge)

I'm a huge dork so coming up with challenges is fun.

The Selfie challenge one is always done in December--that one you have to read books that are only in your TBR pile (or mountain range--my "pile" is about 600 books now. But I can't stop looking for more books. Yes, I do have a problem, but I figure there are worse things I could be addicted to. And Amazon lets it's Prime members "check out" and read ebooks for free. . .)

And the size of your personal challenge is always set by you. I personally read about 30 or more books a month--but I'm retired and have some rather major health issues, which results in there being days when I am unable to move more than from the bed to the bathroom to the sofa in the living room. And that only with the aid of either my husband or a cane. When I was working (back pre major car smash) I didn't read anywhere near as much as I do now. So I do under stand where life gets in the way of our reading. Just state at the start of the month--I am going to read 2 or 4 or whatever the number of books is, and then you know what your goal is. Even if you don't manage to read that many, you can feel good because you tried to get that many books read.

And up to 3 of your books do not have to be in "our" genres. Although let's admit it--PNR and UF are really very wide categories that include--Paranormal Mysteries, time travel, a lot of sci-fi, steampunk, alternate history. . . .

lol!!
So many of use are, but not all of us can come up with good and versital ideas for challenges.
So, I say let your creativity fly, and maybe it will get the group some great new ideas for 2018.
;-)
