How and when do I nominate books to be read by the group?
In this folder, BOTM Suggestions, you can nominate books by commenting on the different discussion threads for all monthly categories. Suggestion discussions are open for the first two weeks of every month.
Nominations and Seconds: how does it work?
To nominate a group read, simply comment on one of the group discussions (depending on the book - comment on whichever category fits) with your suggested choice. You can click on the "add book/author" hyperlink at the top of the comment box to add a link to the book so others can learn about it.
To second, simply comment or reply on a group discussion with something like "I second ____ book".
Please try to limit your suggestions to one book. There is no limit to books you can second.
Classics versus Modern Classic/Popular category: which should I choose?
The guideline is 1970, which seems to be working.
Anything published 1969 or earlier should be in the Classics category.
Anything published 1970 or later should be in the Modern Classic/Popular reads category.
Bookshelf Catch-Up
The third monthly BOTM category gives members a chance to catch-up on books that the group has already read. For eligible books, please see the "read" bookshelf.
Once a book is "reread" by the group, it cannot be nominated again for 12 months; aka the group can only reread a book once every year.
Poll eligibility: is my nomination eligible for polls?
Once a book is nominated, it must be seconded by another member of the book club in order to be eligible for polls.
Poll selection: which books ultimately get selected for polling?
Only eligible books (see above) can be selected for polling.
From there, the list is narrowed down to 4 (more if there is ties) books based on the following criteria:
1. Most seconds: the more a book is "seconded" by other members of the book club, the more likely it will make polls.
2. Read count: another piece of criteria is the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ "read count" (can be found on the main page for each book). The goal of the group is to catch-up on books that many others have read, so the more it has been read, the more likely we'll read it in this group! If a book has a read count under 50,000, unlikely it makes polls unless there is significant group support. NOTE: this criteria is a guideline that should be considered when nominating a book.
3. Previous polls: if a book has made group polls before but did not win, it will most likely show up again :)
When are BOTM (book of the month) polls open?
BOTM polls will be open for the last week of every month to decide books for the month following the next month. Ex. Polls are open the third week of February to decide April BOTMs. Vote on polls here.
