This book was about a man who 'woke up' in a samurai's body or was transferred to another reality as a swordsman. It's from the 1980's I think. I thought it was Eric Van Lustbader but it's not any of the ones I've looked at again. The man may have been African European in our reality.

The samurai is travelling around the country and is a bit of a thug. The man in our reality tries to solve some of the fights peacefully but gets in even more trouble. I've been looking for this book on and off for yonks.

Kaminishi by Jan Suzukawa turned up while searching, but it was published in 2011.

David, what are the time periods and locations/countries of the two realities/worlds?

I read it in the eighties and it was set in the modern times or at least the twentieth century.

I think it was set in another world and the swordsman was a scoundrel as well.
