Anne Pagh | 30 comments Hey Lesle, you have listed A River Runs Through It by Norman McLean as the winner in 1977. The book has never won the award, though.

Wikipedia:
"In 1977, the Pulitzer Prize committee for Fiction (a.k.a. "fiction jury") recommended A River Runs Through It be awarded the prize for that year. The Pulitzer Prize Board, which has final say for awarding the prize, chose to override their recommendation and decided not to award for fiction that year."

They did give a special Pulitzer Prize for Alex Haley's Roots that year, but not in the Fiction category.

Several times, the Pulitzer Board has failed to agree with the Fiction Jury's pick, even lately when the Jury gives them three picks to choose from. Then no book gets an award
To me, the worst was 1941 when the Board agreed with the Jury's pick of For Whom the Bell Tolls but the President of Columbia University, who chaired the Board, thought the novel offensive and refused to go along with the decision, so the Board reversed their acceptance of the Jury's pick. Otherwise, Hemingway would have joined Faulkner, Tarkington and Updike with two wins.

You are correct. Under the list I used was the Novels recommended for the award by the Jury. Occassionally they listed the Jury recommendation as well.
Thank you for pointing it out so it can be remedied.

Brian thank you for the explanation.

Recommended but No Award Given

The fiction jury had recommended the 1941 award go to Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. Although the Pulitzer Board initially agreed with that judgment, the president of Columbia University, Nicholas Murray Butler, persuaded the board to reverse its judgment because he deemed the novel offensive, and no award was given that year.

The fiction jury had recommended the 1957 award to Elizabeth Spencer's The Voice at the Back Door, but the Pulitzer board, which has sole discretion for awarding the prize, made no award.

The three novels the Pulitzer committee put forth for consideration in 1971 to the Pulitzer board were: Losing Battles by Eudora Welty; Mr. Sammler's Planet by Saul Bellow; and The Wheel of Love by Joyce Carol Oates. The board rejected all three and opted for no award.

The fiction jury had unanimously recommended the 1974 award to Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, but the Pulitzer board, which has sole discretion for awarding the prize, made no award.

The fiction jury had recommended the 1977 award to Norman MacLean's A River Runs Through It, but the Pulitzer board, which has sole discretion for awarding the prize, made no award. That same year, however, Alex Haley's iconic family saga Roots was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize.

2012: No award given. Recommended:
Train Dreams by Denis Johnson
Swamplandia! by Karen Russell
The Pale King by David Foster Wallace (posthumous nominee)

Of Interest

Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 January 29, 1963) was an American poet. His work was initially published in England before it was published in America.

Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime, receiving four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He became one of America's rare "public literary figures, almost an artistic institution."He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works. On July 22, 1961, Frost was named poet laureate of Vermont.

Impressive list Kelly!

Your reads including both Classics and Modern are fine. They are part of the Pultizer's.

It will probably be about 2 or 3 more years before I finish ... and that is only if I can locate copies of some of them.

1983 The Color Purple by Alice Walker
2007 The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Brian E Reynolds | -1133 comments Kelly wrote: "My Pulitzers: 42 done as of 11 Nov 2019"

My result is similar to Kelly's as I have read 43 Pulitzer winners as of the end of 2019. I thought it interesting that, not only are our totals similar, our numbers read of each decade's winners are also very similar:

By - Me/Kelly
1910s - 1 / 2
1920s - 6 / 5
1930s - 2 / 3
1940s - 2 / 2
1950s - 1 / 2
1960s - 2 / 1
1970s - 2 / 3
1980s - 6 / 5
1990s - 7 / 5
2000s - 8 / 9
2010s - 6 / 5

I was surprised I read so few from the 1960s and 1970s. Definitely need to work on the decades from 1930 to 1970. But I doubt if I read very many more of them since, when you look at the list, there are so many you just never hear about.

Brian E Reynolds | -1133 comments Rosemarie wrote: "I have 32 books on my list of Pulitzers read, but some are non-fiction or drama, not just fiction."

Yes, but I can't say I've read that many Canadian prize winners, except The Stone Diaries. Heck, I don't even know the name of any of the prestigious Canadian awards.

message 66: by Rosemarie, Northern Roaming Scholar (new)

Rosemarie | 14842 comments Mod
This may sound heretical, but overall I am not a big fan of award winning books. I have read a number and thought, "What were they thinking?"
Here are some awards-The Giller Prize (also known as the Scotiabank Giller Prize) and the Governor-General's Award.

I read Stone Diaries and thought it was okay, but prefer her book Unless, overall, even though there are some parts that get on my nerves.
I prefer the classics of Canadian literature.

Brian E Reynolds | -1133 comments Kelly_Hunsaker_reads wrote: ".Have you read any more Brian?."

No, I haven't. When you asked I checked and of 23 books I've read this year, only 6 have been American and none were Pulitzer winners, although Stoner might win for its year if a recount were held now. So still at 43.
But you've been busy and now have 51 Pulitzer winners. I've been lapped!

Kelly_Hunsaker_reads wrote: "What do you all think of the 2020 choice?"

I haven't read either Whitehead winner. When my wife read The Underground Railroad in her book group some years ago, it didn't sound like something I'd like that much. i think I'll be more open to it now. I'll read one of the two, probably both if I like the first, sometime in the near future.

Neither can I! At least from my list. The Pulitzers I read during 2020 were:
#1924 - The Able McLaughlins by Margaret Wilson - 3
#1930 - Laughing Boy: A Navajo Love Story by Oliver La Farge - 3
#1965 - The Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau - 4

The Keepers of the House is the clear "keeper" of the three I read. A very good and underread book.

Karin | 625 comments I have marked the ones I know for sure I have read. Given that a few years ago I thought I was reading The Good Earth for the first time only to realize that I read it as a teen, plus the fact that my parents had quite a number of them on their shelves, it is entirely possible I have read more. In fact, at least two of them are books I think I have read but can't be sure.

I am never planning to read all of these, and have marked the two I started, disliked and discarded as dnf. There are a number of them that I have no desire to read, but there are also some here I'd like to and one that my mother gave me (her copy) the last time I was home that I haven't got to yet.

Brian E Reynolds | -1133 comments Karen, it was interesting to see which two you DNF: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and The Goldfinch As a comic book fan I very much enjoyed Kavalier and Clay, but I realize the subject might not be of interest to others. I thought the Goldfinch was decent but not great.
However I do remember thinking that both were Husky-sized (600+pages) books that had a section that, to me, was overlong and really dragged. With Kavalier and Clay it was the section in Antarctica: with the Goldfinch it was the Las Vegas section.

Kathy E | 2213 comments I hope to read more Pulitzers in 2021 and into the next few years. I met my goals from 2018-2020 listed in Message 23.

Edit: 2/20/23

Scarlet Sister Mary - Julia Peterkin (1929)
Years of Grace - Margaret Ayer Barnes (1931)
Now in November - Josephine Winslow Johnson (1935)
In This Our Life - Ellen Glasgow 1942

The Stone Diaries - Carol Shields 1995

Brian E Reynolds | -1133 comments Quite the interesting group, Kathy. I intend to read more old ones but wasn't sure i was going to bother with Scarlet Sister Mary due to the criticism; but the criticism also makes me a bit curious.. What did you think of it? What were your favorites of the Pulitzers you read this year.

This list is what I plan to read in the next few years. So I haven't read them yet.

In 2019-2020 I read:
One of Ours - Willa Cather (1923)
The Keepers of the House - Shirley Ann Grau (1965)
The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt (2014)
Less - Andrew Sean Greer (2018)
The Overstory - Richard Powers (2019)

I loved One of Ours, The Keepers of the House and The Overstory.

I haven't read the criticism of Scarlet Sister Mary. It'll be interesting to read.

Brian E Reynolds | -1133 comments Kathy, I apologize that I misunderstood your post. I need to be a more aware reader.
It seems I'm fairly close to your ratings of the Pulitzer winners you actually did read last year, though slightly less enthusiastic about the really good ones. I rated the ones you gave 5 stars to as 4 star books and, like you, rated both The Goldfinch and Less at 3 stars.
I have a tendency to overuse the 3 and 4 star levels, which total about 90% of my ratings.
