It's still the early days of August, but the cooler weather and back to school sales have us thinking about fall. That doesn't mean there isn't time for one or two great summer "beach reads" this year!

What have been your favorite reads this summer? Any titles on your TBR pile that you're hoping to get to before the leaves change color?

I am currently reading the audiobook for When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon, and it is exactly what I want from a summer read: fun, romance, an interesting setting, and a bit of drama. Plus the narrators do an excellent job capturing the characters.

Mary Kenyon | 3 comments My goal this summer was to tackle some books I feel like everyone *should* read, but know I probably won't, by listening to them as audio books on the way to and from work. That means I've listened to both "Mere Christianity" and "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis on CD, and thoroughly enjoyed them. I'm listening to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" right now. I've got a huge to-read pile to tackle but right now I am concentrating on non-fiction in relation to the writing I am doing.

You know, I adore these types of books! You sound like much more than a noob, though, you have read a lot of the big ones! I have read a lot more of the Young Adult variety of post-apocalyptic fic. The one that stands out for me was "Life as We Knew It" by Susan Beth Pfeffer. This one is really simple, but it really stuck with me for days. I think it showcases the practical side of day to day life post-disaster. Very different than "The Road" - not as good, but still made me think. "The Girl with all the Gifts" and "The Passage" are two that have zombie-type outbreaks that cause the apocalypse - both are excellent, if you are open to that type of thing.

I've had Station Eleven on my TBR shelves for a very, very long time. I think I might even own a print AND an eBook copy that I haven't gotten to yet.

Three of my favorite End of the World but Life Goes On type books that haven't been mentioned here yet:

The Last Policeman A police procedural set in an alternate near future where an asteroid is on track to hit the Earth and wipe out all life and there is absolutely nothing that can be done to stop it.

The Last One A woman on a survivalist reality TV show with an Apocalypse theme doesn't know that an actual catastrophe has occurred.

Ashfall The supervolcano under Yellowstone erupts, and one young teen must survive the destruction to travel from Waterloo, IA to Galena, IL. The local setting just added to the chills for me.

Hey! Ashfall just happens to be the Geek Out Book Club book for October! I haven't read it yet, but I will be soon. I have heard it is pretty good - dark, but good.
