Hi everyone. Just wondering if people can provide feedback for this year's challenges and group reading. Things to think about are:
How did you find this years challenges?
Did you like them?
Were they too much?
Did you want to go back to three books per month?
Did you like the categories for non fiction this year?

All feedback will be appreciated.

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments I have enjoyed this years challenge, I have focused on non-fiction this year so it was great I was able to fit those books into this challenge.

I've not read many of the books of the month in 2017, I think this is mainly down to my reading challenge, too many books and I'm struggling to keep up, will do less books next year so I can read more of the BV books.

Non-fiction topics have worked well, you've got a nice range of books to read.

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Loved them this year. As Jason said it means I have read virtually no books of the month, unless by accident. Maybe that can be my challenge next year.

I have set it at 25 after the Full Deck Challenge, which was a bit much for most people. Would 12 books be better?

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 274 comments I had mentioned elsewhere before that I sometimes read voraciously and sometimes don't read at all. When the weather is fine and my health is fine (physical and mental) I am out and about or working all hours. I have much more time to read in Autumn and Winter - especially late December and January - than most other times of the year. So am really looking forward to the books of the month for those two months and the opportunity to feel connected with other people during the lonely "holiday" season when none of my family except my adult son live in the same country, reading is a good use of keeping your mind occupied so you don't feel as despondent in the extremely lonely season. I have come across the blockbuster challenge but realise I cannot possibly find enough authors to read them all so working across one row, and going to re-read a small paperback I had read previously to complete the row :) Some people read a lot, and some don't. I would like to be able to not have to choose a number for the books and just say, yes I want to play the challenge and fill it in as I go.

Wendy I love a book challenge and have enjoyed taking part in the ones here although I don't tend to post on the threads that much (maybe that can also be a challenge for next year?!) I tend to try and set my self a manageable target and then go on to complete the whole thing (very) gradually during the year after the challenge has finished. I have enjoyed all the challenges that I have done, although my least favourite was the Book Hunter as I didn't have that many appropriate titles already on my to read list.

Personally 12 books is better for me as don't get as much time to read as I would like and that would allow me to read more freely rather than to reading certain things just so I can keep up with the challenge. That said obviously I understand that others have more time than I do!

It would be good if we could find a way to include a few of the monthly reads into the challenge - I enjoyed that in the Full Deck Challenge - as I wish I could read more of the monthly reads than I do currently.

Phew thats a bit of an essay - hope it helps

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 274 comments I think what I tried to say before I started waffling was that a big challenge is fun for some but not for all and you'll never please all of the people all of the time, but for those people if we could play without a set number that might be fab too.

I personally love the big challenges but not everyone has the time so the challenges where people can do the whole lot while others can stick to what they can make time for are best imo, rather than proscribing all to reading a few or all to reading a lot!

I've tried reading the monthly books this year and have managed all months except two I think. It's definitely seems less pressure to have fewer monthly books than 3.

As always Paul, thank you for thinking up the challenges. :)

Sam (aramsamsam) I see some other challenges with multiple levels; maybe this could solve the problem with hitting just the right level of doable but challenging? Like Catherine said, the point where it gets too hard to accomplish is different for everybody. I personally don't always want to commit to a certain number of books for the whole years, so I like challenges where I can level up, if that makes sense.

Thank you for the feedback so far. I have always tried to make the challenges such that you can participate in some or all depending on your choice / time available etc.

What about the monthly reads?

Do people still want them?

Are we doing too many or too few?

Is the split right?

message 11: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 161 comments I like the monthly reads, I think it's a good split.

I've enjoyed the challenges. I'm doing the whole alphabet and have enjoyed hunting out authors with different initials. It's made me realise how many authors I read whose names begin with C! 3 books left but I will finish by the end of the year.

Thanks Becky

Pamela (bibliohound) | 359 comments I always really enjoy the challenges. The bookbuster did cater for people who only want to do a few books, as they could do a line or two - I intended to do that, but went on to do the whole grid in the end. i liked the summer challenge, it's a good idea to break up the year with a shorter challenge.

I enjoy the monthly reads and this year's set up worked well for me. I have noticed though that there seemed to be less participation in the reads that went over two months.
