Since our nov-December reads were contemporary, let’s go with a good old classic to
ring in the new year while we hash out our new guidelines on the sidelines. Everyone has one nomination and one second. First five books to be seconded will go to poll. Any length, era or theme is fine as long as it fits in the classic category. Nominate away!

Ok I’ll start the nominations by sort of cheating. Cheating because I am nominating an entire trilogy that only collectively is a chunkster. It is the Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies. The nomination is for all three books, which are:

3. World of Wonders (352 pages)

I read this about 10 years ago but I would happily read it again so I will second this nomination.

My nomination is one that I am challenging myself to read as being the first on my list of Nobel prize winners I am reading next year

Yessssssss!!! I fairly recently read Fifth Business and it was so, so good. I was already planning to read The Manticore this year and would gladly round off the trilogy.

This is great! We only have room for one more nomination and second - the first four choices are listed in the top post of this thread. Once we have five seconded I will set up a poll.

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.

Wow. Both Buddenbrooks and the Deptford trilogy are so much favorites with me, first read in 1977 and the mid-1980's, respectively, that I re-read both of them (and the 2 other Davies trilogies) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. I am not yet ready for a 3rd reading.
But, strangely, I get more satisfaction from having this group read one of my personal favorites than choosing one I should read myself, like The Charterhouse of Parma, which has been a 20 year TBR. However, my wait may be because I did find The Red and the Black to be a grind.

I too had a Davies marathon about 10-15 years ago but it was not a good time of my life and I do not remember a lot of what I read so it will be like reading new for me :) (that's why they are not on my read list, I was going through my divorce and I think I was brain dead with the trauma at time. I lived to discover what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.)
