1. Fifth Business (252 pages)
2. The Manticore (288 pages)
3. World of Wonders (352 pages)
Here’s all of it in one volume: The Deptford Trilogy: Fifth Business/The Manticore/World of Wonders

I read this about 10 years ago but I would happily read it again so I will second this nomination.

Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family by Thomas Mann

Yessssssss!!! I fairly recently read Fifth Business and it was so, so good. I was already planning to read The Manticore this year and would gladly round off the trilogy.

Sorry, that was me seconding.

In honor of a nice new Kindle edition, I will nominate:
The Charterhouse of Parma

Some very interesting nominations there, so I will resist the temptation to add any more. I will second Buddenbrooks

But, strangely, I get more satisfaction from having this group read one of my personal favorites than choosing one I should read myself, like The Charterhouse of Parma, which has been a 20 year TBR. However, my wait may be because I did find The Red and the Black to be a grind.

Anyone want to second either?

I too had a Davies marathon about 10-15 years ago but it was not a good time of my life and I do not remember a lot of what I read so it will be like reading new for me :) (that's why they are not on my read list, I was going through my divorce and I think I was brain dead with the trauma at time. I lived to discover what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.)

ring in the new year while we hash out our new guidelines on the sidelines. Everyone has one nomination and one second. First five books to be seconded will go to poll. Any length, era or theme is fine as long as it fits in the classic category. Nominate away!
