Dianne Since our nov-December reads were contemporary, let’s go with a good old classic to
ring in the new year while we hash out our new guidelines on the sidelines. Everyone has one nomination and one second. First five books to be seconded will go to poll. Any length, era or theme is fine as long as it fits in the classic category. Nominate away!

Nominations:
1. The Deptford Trilogy: Fifth Business/The Manticore/World of Wonders - Dianne / Tracey - Jen
2. Fortunata and Jacinta - Sofia/Rosemary
3. Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family -Tracey/ Christopher
4. The Charterhouse of Parma - Christopher/ Roman Clodia - Sofia
5. Moby-Dick or, The Whale - Paula/Pamela

Dianne Ok I’ll start the nominations by sort of cheating. Cheating because I am nominating an entire trilogy that only collectively is a chunkster. It is the Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies. The nomination is for all three books, which are:

1. Fifth Business (252 pages)
2. The Manticore (288 pages)
3. World of Wonders (352 pages)

Here’s all of it in one volume: The Deptford Trilogy: Fifth Business/The Manticore/World of Wonders

I read this about 10 years ago but I would happily read it again so I will second this nomination.

Tracey (traceyrb) My nomination is one that I am challenging myself to read as being the first on my list of Nobel prize winners I am reading next year

Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family by Thomas Mann

Yessssssss!!! I fairly recently read Fifth Business and it was so, so good. I was already planning to read The Manticore this year and would gladly round off the trilogy.

Sorry, that was me seconding.

Christopher (Donut) | 81 comments I will second Buddenbrooks .

In honor of a nice new Kindle edition, I will nominate:

The Charterhouse of Parma

message 9: by Roman Clodia (new)

Roman Clodia I second The Charterhouse of Parma - it's been on my TBR for actual years now!

message 10: by Tracey (last edited Dec 10, 2017 06:26PM) (new)

Tracey (traceyrb) That's 3 out of 3 of the ones that have been seconded so far. I would be in for any of the 3.

message 11: by PS (new)

PS I second The Chaterhouse of Parma as well.

Some very interesting nominations there, so I will resist the temptation to add any more. I will second Buddenbrooks

message 13: by Rosemary (last edited Dec 11, 2017 02:22AM) (new)

Rosemary I'll second Fortunata and Jacinta. I'd happily join in with any of these, so I don't feel a need to nominate anything :)

Julie | 33 comments Happy to read any of the nominations!

message 15: by Dianne (new)

Dianne This is great! We only have room for one more nomination and second - the first four choices are listed in the top post of this thread. Once we have five seconded I will set up a poll.

message 16: by Julie (new)

Julie | 33 comments Ok, clutching at straws here. I will nominate
The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.

message 17: by Brian E (new)

Brian E Reynolds | 148 comments Wow. Both Buddenbrooks and the Deptford trilogy are so much favorites with me, first read in 1977 and the mid-1980's, respectively, that I re-read both of them (and the 2 other Davies trilogies) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. I am not yet ready for a 3rd reading.
But, strangely, I get more satisfaction from having this group read one of my personal favorites than choosing one I should read myself, like The Charterhouse of Parma, which has been a 20 year TBR. However, my wait may be because I did find The Red and the Black to be a grind.

message 18: by Paula (new)

Paula (paula-j) I don't know if it's too late but I nominate Moby-Dick or, The Whale

message 19: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Not too late! Whichever gets a second the fastest gets in the poll. Will it be Moonstone or Moby Dick?

Anyone want to second either?

I too had a Davies marathon about 10-15 years ago but it was not a good time of my life and I do not remember a lot of what I read so it will be like reading new for me :) (that's why they are not on my read list, I was going through my divorce and I think I was brain dead with the trauma at time. I lived to discover what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.)

message 21: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 161 comments I will second Moby-Dick or, The Whale
