Need Help?

Post your questions here and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Need book rec for certain shelves?

Post your request here and hopefully, your fellow participants will respond with one to appeal to you.

Is the book you've chosen only been shelved by 1 or 2 user/s and you're concerned it may be taken off?

Post it here to reserve! We'll confirm back.

Before posting, please do check to see if book has already been confirmed for that shelf.

On your main book page's URL (see above):
1. delete this part of the URL: "book/show",
2. type in "shelf/users" to replace above (1) deletion, and
2. at the end of the URL, add the following "?shelf=shelf-name" (In this case, it's "?shelf=other-countries"
3. Enter

If no one has shelved book on that particular shelved, this will generate no result. However, it is shelved there, it will show the following:

description

Please compare the 2 URLs in above images for a better feel on how to do this search

Please include the URL of your search result (like the 2nd image) when claiming your Round completion.

Note: Thanks, D.G., for first bringing to our attention of this way of searching! I couldn't find your original post so I made my own

It was pointed out to me that there is an easier way to search than above (post 2) method; thanks so much, LaurLa!

On your main book page genre, click on any of the 'numbers of users'

description

Following above example, if you click on 'Fantasy', GR will show you users who have shelved book on 'Fantasy', like this:

description

Type over the name of the shelf (in this example, fantasy) with the name of the shelf you're looking for (in this example, multiverse) and if there are any users who shelved this book on 'Multiverse', GR will show you these users (as per this example, there are 3 users) like so:

description

To check if common books are shelved in your & the other person's bookshelves:

1. Go to that person's bookshelves (links should be available here) and click on 'Compare Books' (on the right of the page, above the page numbers)

description

I'm using CluckingBell's as an example ;)

And below page will show common books between CluckinBell's shelf and mine.

description

2. To limit the selection to certain shelves, go to the drop down menus on the right of the page. In this example, I'll choose:
* to-read for my shelf, AND
* read for CluckingBell's

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Will you accept books that are in the same series? For example, if I've read #1 on a shelf but #2 isn't there, can I read #2 or does the book have to be marked on that shelf?

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay, guys, it's been a crazy weekend with Christmas around the corner & all....

@Stacey: unfortunately the answer is no. The book will have to actually be on that particular shelf. You see, sometimes book 1 doesn't even fit the shelf for book 2 and that's why you'll see odd numbered serial books on shelves.

Lagullande | 484 comments My first spin was for the One-pov shelf. There is nothing on this shelf that I want to read so I have used one of my swaps.

But, looking at the books on the list, I can't work out what One-pov means? I thought pov meant point-of-view, but the shelf seems to be full of romance/fantasy/chicklit, which can't be the only books written from just one point of view. Can someone explain it to me?

Tien,

Since I know I'm likely to change my mind multiple times before I finish, I'm hesitant to have you take the time check all the possibilities for books that are shelved only a few times. If I just save screenshots I can post if necessary to verify, that's also ok, isn't it?

I'd have thought One-pov also meant point of view... however, do note that it really depends on who's using 'one-pov' as their shelves so there could be a few people who love romances and shelved books there and no others...

These shelves are all user defined so unfortunately there's no definite answers.

Susan, when I have time I will be setting up a Google doc so if you need some books confirmed, you may as well set up a list as I will note them on the Google doc which will be visible to everyone to check on.

What will be helpful when posting your list is to actually post the link to that page showing users who shelved your book on that particular shelf (the second image on post #2)

My guess from looking at the list when doing other stuff is that it tends to be from one person's pov over the course of the series. Like Vampire Academy for example was all from Rose's perspective.

Yes, that's right. All I meant was that it will be helpful when I'm checking them now in this 'help me' thread and then I'll list the books on the Google doc and you're all set. So even if they dropped off by the time you post your completion, I've already got them on the list.

Cat (cat_uk) | 307 comments so, I've got an odd one....

I own The Chronicles of Amber, which is a collection of titles 1 - 5 in a 10 book series.
Books 1 - 10 are all individually on the mulitverse shelf
The collection of all 10 is on the multiverse shelf
The collection I have (above) isn't on the multiverse shelf. (go figure!)

As the individual titles 1-5 in the series are all listed on the multiverse shelf, please can I use this collection of books 1-5 for that spin??

Lynn, that shelf is not my cup of tea, either. But I read Sabriel, and even though I only gave it 3 stars, I did enjoy it enough to probably read the second in the series.

And Magic Bites is one I'm considering reading.

message 45: by CassieV (new)

CassieV | 252 comments What do you ladies normally read? I've read a few on that shelf, so I can try to help. Sabriel is probably the better written of the two, especially if you like more description and a bit of a slower pace. Magic Bites is more fun and humorous (and a shorter, quicker read), but I would caution that the series doesn't really come into it's own until about the third book. I hope that doesn't keep you from reading it, though! It's an awesome series, that I wholeheartedly love!

I was surprised when I saw I had read several books from the Necromancer shelf.

I love the Kate Daniels series. Magic Bites is the first book. The books are funny and are packed with action. There also is a bit of romance in the books. I agree with Cassie that the serie doesn't really come into it's own until about the third book. I'm currently reading book #7 at the moment.

Another book I've enjoyed that is on the Necromancer list is Touch of Power. I like that author. It's been a couple of years ago that I read this book and the only thing I can recall is that I liked it.

You could also try Uprooted. It's a retelling of a fairy tale. I liked it. It's a quick read.

If you like fantasy, you might like A Darker Shade of Magic. Though the second and third book of the series are much better than the first.

Another fantasy book that is on that shell is The Final Empire. It's very good. It was hard to put down that book.

Thanks Lucie! That does give me a few more options. Guess I need to get to the library next week and thumb through a few books to figure out which works best for me. Having 3 people give opinions on a genre I don't read is helpful. I do read fantasy occasionally, so it's good to know there are some of those on the list.
