Fear shouts. Terror whispers.

Whispers will be featured as a Group Read during the month of March 2018 and was last featured in June 2013.

Whispers was first published in 1980 and is among Dean's most twisted and disturbing novels.

In the Afterword of Whispers, Dean writes:

Whispers was the last book I wrote in total obscurity and the last book I wrote on a typewriter.

Matthew | 183 comments I haven't read Whispers in YEARS! I think I'll be done with Origin in time to participate in this group read.

Charissa Wilkinson (lilmizflashythang) | 262 comments This one gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Fred (fredderoche) Are we doing 2 this month? Thanks

I'm reading Origin by Dan Brown this month as well :-)

Hell Yeah! Love it :-) Has some similarities to The Bad Place.

Yes. Whispers and Winter Moon. They tied on the poll :-) Both titles will be featured during the month of March as Group Reads.

Dannibal | 18 comments I am looking forward to this; one of my fave Koontz books. The end always gives me the creeps but that's why I love it so much.

So do you like that sentence or not? :-) Can't really tell. ha ha ha

K.L. Phelps (kl_phelps) | 72 comments Dang I haven't read that one in forever, and looking at my bookshelf I don't see it! Which is quite irritating as I know I have/had at least two copies. I can clearly remember the covers, unless I am misremembering, one had a red cover with oddly stylized writing and the silhouette of a screaming face, and the other was a black cover with a station wagon on it. Those were both paperbacks. Can't remember if I have a hardcover of that one. Well you know what that means, if I want to join in on the fun I'll need to make a run to the bookstore!

Creepy is Good :-)

Barbara | 485 comments True Dustin but this one is especially creepy to me for a certain reason I won’t mention cause....spoiler 🤣🤣🤣

Dannibal | 18 comments I had a copy of the book, but cannot find it. Thankfully though, my mom had it on her Kindle and is letting me borrow the Kindle so I can read it. Yay!

I just got to the part where the one officer, Frank, dies. Ugh. And just after I started liking the guy (he was kinda an arse in the beginning of the book).

Fred (fredderoche) I did not know there was a film, but only in Canada?

Fred (fredderoche) Does everyone like chapter 2's Bartender, Otto & his trick of biting thru the glass beer mugs?

Dustin the wind Crazy little brown owl (dustpancrazy) | 6110 comments Mod
Mid Month and I haven't started yet. I better get on that soon and start Whispering.

I am currently reading Whispers :-) Starting this book reminds me of how Dean has evolved since 1980. The descriptive sex scenes are a thing of the past.

Yes. Very Entertaining :-)

"You're a magician?" Tony asked Otto. "What do you do - make unruly customers disappear?"
"He scares them," the blond said. "It's neat. Go on, Otto. Show them your stuff."
. . . . . . .

"Ever cut yourself?" Tony shouted to Otto.
"Every once in a while. Not often. And I've never cut my tongue. The sign of someone who can do the stunt well is in the condition of the tongue," Otto said. "My tongue has never been cut."
"But you have injured yourself."
"Sure. My lips a few times. Not often."
"But that only makes the trick more effective," the blonde said. "You should see him when he cuts himself. Otto stands there in front of the jerk who's been causing all the trouble, and he just pretends like he doesn't know he's hurt himself. He lets the blood run."

Personally, I am glad the descriptive sex scenes are a thing of the past. If I wanna read smut, I'll read fanfic. xD

Is it just me, or does it seem like Whispers is more racially diverse in its characters than many of his other (especially recent) books? I mean, I am glad it is diverse, but I feel sometimes that is lacking a bit in some of his other books.

Charissa Wilkinson (lilmizflashythang) | 262 comments Not really. You have to remember that to get racial diversity--or diversity period--you either have to hit your audience over the head with how diverse your cast is, or they become stereotypes. Sometimes you have to take Dr. King's advice and look at the quality of character, and not the quantity of diversity.

Tricia Toney | 20 comments I haven't read this book in years. It was fun to reread.

Finished re-reading Whispers yesterday morning. A great twisted tale. The unique family dynamic brings to mind another story that Dean would release later in the 80s - The Bad Place :-)
