Awesomesauce.

Yes, you're right (and I caused the confusion). However,

***SPOILERS***

There is an exodus of Haitians back to Haiti, and a chunk of the book takes place in Haiti. I tried to determine how much, I think it's about 80 pages or so [Edit: 85 out of 310].

***END SPOILERS***

Anyway, since it involves both Haitians and Haiti it might qualify. It would probably need approval from Cynthia.

Sorry to mislead!

If you want a book set in Denmark, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is set in Copenhagen. Sooo good.

Someone mentioned Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Hamlet, of course, also takes place in Denmark, if you wanted to read the play.

Is Guernsey a country? I thought it was like a sort of state of the UK. But if so, I will read that.

message 62: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 669 comments According to The World Factbook (), Guernsey is a British crown dependency but it is not part of the UK.

Fun fact...Guernsey is also a tax haven, so if you ever need to hide money, you could probably get away with it (or any of the other channel islands for that matter--there are a lot of financial trust companies that have set up shop there for that reason). Whereas in the UK, they don't tolerate that sort of financial secrecy.

message 63: by Rora (new)

Rora I have my "J" book already figured out, Fudoki by Kij Johnson for Japan. Now I just need a book for an "A" country. Any recommendations?

The first thing that came to my mind was Annie John A Novel by Jamaica Kincaid. It's a short, beautifully written mother/daughter story (with political parallels) set in Antigua. I think most of Kincaid's work is set in Antigua, as that's where she's from.

You might also look at Angola, Argentina, and Australia, though nothing else springs to mind for me.

I recommend I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak (author of The Book Thief). It takes place in Australia. It is VERY VERY different than The Book Thief, but it's really awesome in a completely unique way.

message 67: by Abigail (new)

Abigail | 315 comments I have A, too. I used the BiblioTravel.com link, which was *very* helpful. There were several others listed, and I was looking for something kind of different from the rest of my list, so I'm not sure these are what you want. (And now I have Katie's suggestion to add to the list, too!) That said, here's what I had in my temp file:
AUSTRALIA:
In a Sun-Burned Country by Bryson
One for the Road by Tony Horwitz
AUSTRIA:
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp
The Seven Per-Cent Solution by Nicholas Meyer (holmes mystery)
The Painted Kiss by Elizabeth Hickey also works for art class book
ARMENIA:
Passage to Ararat by Michael Arlen (memoir)

Check out The Swinging Bridge by Ramabai Espinet. It's set in Trinidad (partially, also partially in Canada) and is on my TBR shelf.

Also, V.S. Naipaul is from Trinidad. His A House for Mr. Biswas is set there (and perhaps others, as well). I had to put it down because I found the beginning slow and just wasn't in the mood. It is considered a classic, though, so clearly someone enjoyed it! If you give it a try, let me know what you think.

Kerry Greenwood is one of my favourite authors. She's Australian and all her books are set in and around Melbourne. The Phryne Fisher series are 1920s mysteries with a real dash of flair and the Corinna Chapman books are modern day ones set around a bakery.

Thanks for the recommendation Nicki, I haven't read a mystery for awhile. I think I'll go with the first Phryne Fisher book. : )

I agree, Sara, but there are differing opinions.

message 77: by Sara (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments I'm pretty sure Cynthia will be okay with it. She approved Tibet and Taiwan (I would have, too), and I wouldn't say they are as much countries as the Vatican is. Plus, there aren't many V countries!

Vanautu (never heard of it before now...)
Vatican City
Venezuela
Vietnam
Virgin Islands (if approved)

You need all the V's you can get!

Some pretty helpful links for this task have been posted in this folder (appropriately titled 'Helpful Links'):
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...

There is a section for links that help you 1) determine the countries that fit your initials and 2) find books set in those countries.

Right off the top of my head I can think of Scotland, Switzerland, Sweden and Swaziland (?) as 'S' countries. I know that there are tons of books set in those countries. I'm not sure what sort of books you're looking for. But the website URLs provided in the Helpful Links folder should really help you narrow down your choices. I know it helped me!!

These are only but a few. Hope this helps!
