Matthew Cole (mattdeancole) | 23 comments Consider having the first few chapters available to read on your website as sort of a preview/sample of your writing.

Bob Whitely (qt_games) | 13 comments Hi Richard. The internet is a big place. I've had my own website up for over 10 years (recently moved it and started over) and ran a forum for a time as well, sometimes running contests to attract attention and make it a fun place. I'm fairly active on social media, though not enough, apparently, and am really just getting started here. The reason I tell you this is because if you believe in your book, you will want to spread its wings and fly a good deal farther than your website can carry you. You want to maximize its potential.

It's asking way more than you think to get anyone to buy something off of a small site. It happens, of course. And just getting noticed is a tall order, especially on a single, small site. I would definitely have an excerpt, as Matt said, above. I'd also start up a newsletter (again, difficult to get subscribers, but handy if you do it right. MailChimp is a good one to turn to for that.) I would also be looking to get your book on Amazon or somewhere else with high traffic.

Sadly, writing the book is the easy part. I don't mean to be negative by any means. I'm just saying that the marketing and promotion are the real work and even a great book still needs to be found by potential fans. I do like your site quite a bit and can see you've put a good amount of work into it.

If you haven't, you'll probably want to create a special 1 page "Landing Page" that's different than your website (though it could be a hidden page of your website or a free Wix page) in that it just focuses on 1 thing you want to accomplish (building a mailing list, selling that one book, whatever. I've even heard that it shouldn't have links on it that can take you anywhere else as you don't want to distract them from putting their email addresses in it. Just some ideas. There is no magic formula. Thanks for reaching out and best of luck with your book!
