Laura | 9707 comments About this Challenge
Starts on October 27th, 2018 and runs for 6 weeks
The team with the highest points at the end of the 6 weeks wins!
Each week the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a word
The team's task is to read books to spell out the word to gain points by number of pages read (check point system below)
The team will get an extra 15 completion points if all the letters in the word are part of their spell-it-out
Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more points (according to the point system below).
The team must read books to complete a read through of their word before they can get points for completing subsequent read throughs (i.e. if you only complete one book in the second read through and three in the third, you don't get points for the those 3 books in the third).
Example:
BONES BONES BO --> Gets points for all letters
BONES BON BO --> Only BONES + BON get points
Books must be more than 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scriptplays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfinder.com) as more than 40,000 words
Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count.
◈Only books READ during the specified week can be used (“read date is what counts to know which week it must be used in - but remember it must be started after the challenge begins.) Books cannot be read and then “banked to use for a later week in the challenge

Point System
 Books between 160 and 200 pages = 5 points
Books between 201 pages and 300 pages = 10 points
 Books between 301 and 400 pages = 20 points
 Books between 401 and 500 pages = 40 points
 Books between 501 and 650 pages = 60 points
 Books between 651 and 800 pages = 80 points
 Books over 801 pages = 100 points

Additional Points
The team will get additional bonus points for "collecting" their word in the categories below(*):
- Word in text --> 20 points
- Word in title/series name --> 30 points
- Word on the cover --> 40 points
- Word as genre --> 50 points
(*)Note 1: Collecting the word can be done once per category.
Note 2: If the word is a colour, the category "Word on the cover" means reading a book with that cover colour (cover must be about 50% of that colour)
Note 3: Books need to be part of the spell-it-out to be used for points

 BOM bonus:
- Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
- Participating in a current BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points
Note 1: We will accept one team member per book per team for writing a days DQs. If, by three days prior to the BOM starting, we don't have enough volunteers to write all DQs, then we will let more than one team member per team write questions. If we have more people than days sign up (prior to 3 days before start date) we will randomise the volunteers to determine those who can write DQs
Note 2: Books need to be part of the spell-it-out to be used for points

How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter of the series name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If you are listening to an audiobook, the first letter in the narrator's first or last name also can be used. We're also allowing for Translators names, as long as the edition you are reading is a translation version.

Themes
We are using holiday themes for the wheel: 2 weeks for Halloween, 2 weeks for Thanksgiving and last 2 weeks for Christmas.

Each wheel will have 24 words matching the corresponding theme, from which 2 would be colours:
- Halloween Colours: Black and Purple
- Thanksgiving Colours: Orange and Brown
- Christmas Colours: Red and Green

Laura | 9707 comments Hi everyone; are you ready for the next team challenge? Its so nice to see you all again. Elizabeth, I think you are the only person I haven't played with yet! I'm Laura; your team captain and I 'm super happy to have Sandy as my co -captain. Hmmm... lets see about me. I 'm from Nova Scotia, Canada. I love to read, hike, walk my dog, play cards, kayak, camp and go to the beach. I just finished a 30 day challenge and I 'm eager to go again!

This is going to be fun! If everyone could link their team shelf that would be awesome. I'll work on getting the rules up over the weekend but may be slow as its our Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend! Gobble, gobble.

Geri Hi! Didn’t realize teams would be announced so soon. But I’m ready and psyched for the challenge! I always have trouble creating links. But here goes, my shelf is wheel-a-thon-3

I have copied the html but I don’t think it is working. LOL Let me know if I need to try again.

Geri Laura wrote: "Geri, are you reading Lethal White (Cormoran Strike, #4) by Robert Galbraith now?"

Yes, I’ll be finishing tomorrow. I started before I signed up for the challenge. It has been a challenge finishing the book! I have been shelving Halloween and Christmas books and hope they come in handy later!

Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner!

Hi! I just saw our word to spell is jack o lantern. Not a short word like I hoped. LOL I looked through my upcoming books real quick and can complete the letters T, A, R, C, K and E easily. I’ll put those on hold until the challenge starts. Do we claim the letters before everything starts?

message 21: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1607 comments Morning all!!
My shelf is wheel-a-thon2018
I'm excited to get this started now. I'm from the UK, outside of London. Newly married newly moved into our first house so I do tend to disappear on weekends as he makes me put books down and read. The horrors of it!

message 22: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Good morning Geri and Megan! Yeah some of us are here! Lots of time for everyone else to check in yet..
Geri- I started mine too but I'm only about 50 pages in.
You are right we didn't get a great first word but we will make the best of it. I'm going to talk to Sandy about claiming letters Geri and get back to you.
I'm off to get ready for work and then pick up my son tonight! Yeah he is coming home again!

Elizabeth | 61 comments Good morning, everyone! I'm so excited to play with all of you. :)

Here's my shelf: wheel-a-thon-iii

I'm in Ottawa, Canada, in my late 30's, married, and I have a 4-year old daughter and 3 cats who all keep me on my toes. I mostly read in the evenings after the little one's in bed. It's my stress relief after a long day!

Hi Danielle, Elizabeth, and Megan!

Megan - Weekends are busy for me too because my husband isn’t working and expects us to spend every minute together. LOL Congrats on the new home! It’s fun to decorate a new home.

You definitely have a lot on your plate! I have 2 spoiled cats. I agree they do keep us busy!

I’m sure you must be overjoyed that your son is coming home!

If I can put my 2 cents in, I would suggest claiming letters so we make sure we complete our word and get completion points. With all the people on our team, it shouldn’t take long to complete. And hopefully spell the word out again. I can read 4-5 books a week, and most are 300-500 pages.

SandyL | 4721 comments Hi MH!

Have a great Thanksgiving weekend, Laura! Does anyone else have any fun plans? I'm just reading and cleaning. My dogs (I have two Golden Retrievers) are going to the groomer today, so it means I have to wash the floors. Thank goodness for audiobooks!!!

message 34: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments Thanks Sandy. Less than an hour we are taking off to enjoy family and food

Laura | 9707 comments Hi everyone;
Here is the link to the planning spreadsheet. Hopefully, I did it right and you all have access.

Geri, yes we are going to claim our letters; I 'm hoping we can spell our word at least twice and maybe even a third time knowing how much you, Megan, Sandy and Brooke read.

LOL, Sandy! I’m sure your babies appreciate it. I saw the movie A Star is Born today. Really good and I love Bradley Cooper. He can actually sing. Of course, Lady Gaga can sing.

Anyhow, enjoy your reading. I just got Dracul from the library. I’ll be reading that on Monday.

message 37: by Geri (new)

Geri Yes, the spreadsheet worked for me. I put myself down for 4 books. I chose longer books because we get more points. If I can fit another book in during the week, I will!

So nice to "meet" someone else from Canada! Happy Thanksgiving!

message 40: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments I've claimed the "J" which also works for finding the work in title or series name! (too far away for me to claim anything else)

I 'm impressed that you know what you are reading then Geri. I 'm too moody a reader to plan that far ahead.

Alissa | 771 comments Hi All,

I’m Alissa and I live in Texas around the Dallas area. I’m looking forward to this challenge and getting to know a few new folks.

I’m hoping this challenge will help get my read game up!!

I will add my shelf in a little bit.

I agree with Laura about not ever knowing what book will be next usually how it will fit for a challenge is close to the top but then it’s whether it’s available at the library. More power to you Geri for having them picked out and then waiting to read them.

I will hopefully know more when it gets closer to the start date.

Happy Thanksgiving to you ladies who are celebrating!!!

Well back to reading I go 🤓

I don’t know why my links never work. Maybe because I’m on an iPad? But thanks for doing it for me, Laura!

I am a planner and a hoarder of books and audiobooks. LOL I always create a reading schedule monthly. Whether I stick to it is the question.:)

Question Laura, how was your Thanksgiving? And I always wondered if Canadian Thanksgiving is the same as U.S. with turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie? I’m getting hungry already!

Hi Alissa and Zee!

message 50: by Laura (new)

Laura | 9707 comments No worries. Canadian Thanksgiving I suspect is very much the same as yours. We give thanks for what we have. We had turkey, tonnes of veggies, dressing and lots of desserts. ( Mom had apple pie instead of pumpkin pie) Lots of family, laughs and fun.
