5.9 - World Language
Read a book that was originally written in a language different from your native language.
Required: State your native language(s) and the original language of the book

Native Language definition:
A first language (also native language, mother tongue, arterial language, or L1) is the language(s) a person has learned from birth or within the critical period, or that a person speaks the best and so is often the basis for sociolinguistic identity.

Here's the definition of native language

A first language (also native language, mother tongue, arterial language, or L1) is the language(s) a person has learned from birth or within the critical period, or that a person speaks the best and so is often the basis for sociolinguistic identity.

You'll need to decide which language fits that definition

If the book was originally written in English (or another language besides Icelandic) it would work

Does that mean I can read any book originally written in English or any other European language?

Skylla (skyllarider) | 8 comments I lived in French-speaking Africa so I picked up French as my first spoken language, quickly followed by Bengali (the language my parents and relatives speak) and then English so that by 1 and 3/4 I spoke all three languages in a jumbled mess. Does this mean I cannot read any books in French, English or Bengali? Or only Bengali?

I'd like to know if The Shadow of the Wind qualifies as a Spanish written book, it says translated by Lucia Graves ,but the author lives in LA ....

I'm assuming it was originally written in Spanish ?

Thanks for any help :)

Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ lists the original title as original title as
"La sombra del viento." That doesn't appear English to ME!

I plan on using this book as well, so I'm hoping that you get an official answer pretty quick in case we both need to keep looking - but I'm betting we don't.

message 23: by Pat (new)

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments And from Wikipedia.

The Shadow of the Wind (Spanish: La Sombra Del Viento) is a 2001 novel by Spanish writer Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and a worldwide bestseller. The book was translated into English in 2004 by Lucia Graves and sold over a million copies in the UK after already achieving success on mainland Europe, topping the Spanish bestseller lists for weeks.

Oh thank you, Pat ! It sounds like we both may have found a good one !

Yes, that would work as a book originally written in Spanish.
(The author has extras at - music downloads, a walking tour, etc)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4419 comments BTW .... Isabel Allende writes all her books in Spanish (even though she lives in California). So if Spanish is NOT your native language, you could read one of her many books.

Since the GR description does not indicate that this book was originally written in German, it does not seem to fit the task requirement of "a book originally written in a language other than your native language." Even if some or all of the stories may have originated in Germany, that doesn't necessarily mean that this book was originally written in German.

However, I am only giving you my thoughts on this - so you may want to ask again when Dlmrose is back. Mid-September or so would be good.

Cynthia (Bingeing On Books) (bingeingonbooks) I am having a hard time finding a book that meets this description. My native language is English. What are some examples of books that were originally written in another language?

Cynthia (Bingeing On Books) (bingeingonbooks) So would A Hundred Years of Solitude or Anne Frank be appropriate?

when you ask a question in a help thread, please link to the book so that extra searches need not be done to look at the book.

here's one listopia - /list/show/1....

There are others. Go to listopia and search on terms like "translated books."

Keep in mind that people add stuff to listopias that isn't necessarily appropriate/accurate. This may give you some ideas, but you need to check the listing for the specific book, to make sure that it really fits.

Cynthia (Bingeing On Books) (bingeingonbooks) I believe I have found one that works. Like I said, my native language is English. Looks like One Hundred Years of Solitude was originally written in Spanish. On the main page, it does list a translator and the original Spanish name of the book. Would that work?

LouLouReads | 221 comments I'm hoping to read Die Verwandlung by Kafka for this challenge.

Here is my question: if I read this as an ebook in German, and there is no German language mass market paperback available for length verification, do I use the English mass-market paperback , or a non-mass-market German paperback? Editions of this book seem to have anywhere between 40 and 250 pages!

message 39: by Sandy, Moderator Emeritus (new)

Sandy | 16893 comments Mod
Please review the Rules of the Challenge. Rule 7 describes how to determine ebook length. If there's no German language MMPB, use the one that comes up as most popular.
