Alondra Miller | 2463 comments Just finished A Darker Shade of Magic, and gave it 4 stars.

It actually took me 2 tries to get into it. The first time I picked it up; I was bored, this time it seemed to click. Maybe it was just my mood at the time.

I enjoyed the first book.

Char | 17390 comments Not horror, but I finished reading Doing Justice: A Prosecutor's Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law. I thought it was an excellent look at our justice system.

An interesting idea for a book but it didn't come together like it should have.

message 358: by Char (new)

Char | 17390 comments I finished up Stoker's Wilde by Steven Hopstaken and thought it was a blast! Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde chase vampires and werewolves through London in the late 1870's.

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 1471 comments Sleep in the Dust of the Earth by Anthony Hains I just finished this novella up and it was some dark, creepy fun (well, I found it fun but my sense of humor is skewed).

The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager

It started slow, then went really creepy and intense and I loved it, then the ending kind of left me unsatisfied and was a little meh, the guy definitely knows how to write a thriller I just hope the next one I pick up is a little more consistent throughout (at least for me)

Sounds like they need a crossover with Abe Lincoln: Vampire Slayer!

I go on Mira Grant binges, also under her other name.. Rolling in the Deep (Rolling in the Deep, #0.5) was hella nice too.

Now reading a 3rd book in a row in the same YA series, Stormcaster (Shattered Realms, #3) by Cinda Williams Chima.. has lite GOT vibe, a lot of fun

Yes! I read that one too, and it was a lot of fun. The Mermaids are definitely the highlight; the "humans" are completely secondary.

Incredible book, my new all-time favorite. It had everything I could have possibly wanted in a horror/fantasy - Clive Barker is the best.

Not a fan of this one. I honestly haven't been a fan of any of her books minus the Harry Potter series, which I haven't read yet but I do have the first book.

Dragons of Summer Flame (Dragonlance The Second Generation, #2) by Margaret Weis
Been forever since I've read the core Dragonlance books, and forgot how good they really are. And how fucking long they are. This one book set me back reading time for at least two other books.

Have you read the Pine Deep trilogy by that author? They were his first novels, and are so much fun. The stakes (no pun, but there are vampires...and other things) just amp up over the three books, and the characters are probably the best he's put to paper.

message 397: by Erin (new)

Erin (ems84) | 8945 comments No. I haven't read that series. I have read some of his Joe Ledger series, though.

Daniel James | 62 comments Erin wrote: "No. I haven't read that series. I have read some of his Joe Ledger series, though."

Cool, well if you get the chance you should check them out.

I liked the first two in the Ledger series, but then the whole "science" aspect just seemed to suck the fun out of it. Since the entire concept is batshit crazy to begin with, I don't understand Maberry's insistence on acting as though these are potential, legitimate threats. But hey, he seems to be doing okay out of it.

I will.

I have only read the first two Ledger books so far. I felt a little bit that way for the second book but as you said, he seems to be making out well with the concept.
