I highly recommend any play written by Henrik Johan Ibsen: A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, An Enemy of the People, Peer Gynt, The Master Builder.

Sigrid Undset for her Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy.

I'm Norwegian, so I could suggest lots of books set in Norway. I'm not quite sure which books are translated to English though. But all the books mentioned above are good choices, the books by Karin Fossum are great and the Sigrid Undset books too. And The House With the Blind Glass Windows is supposed to be great, though I haven't actually read that one...

The Orange Girl?

I haven't read The Orange Girl but it's supposed to be good. It was actually made into a movie last year. All Jostein Gaarder's book are really popular, so I think it could be a good choice :)

I read "The Orange Girl" a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

I second all of the suggestions for Jostein Gaarer's books. I enjoyed Through A Glass, Darkly (as well as Sophie's World and The Orange Girl)
