Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments The twins for October are listed below. I did my best to pair everyone with a twin who answered similarly.

Please reach out to your twin to decide on what to read. Once you decide, post it here, and then come back when you've finished to let us know what you thought of it.

If you message your twin and don't hear back at all, please let me know.

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Felicia and I will be reading Warchild. I'm super excited about this one--especially because it double dips with the #readwomen2014 challenge.

message 3: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Elizabeth and I will be reading The Life of Elizabeth I. We are both Tudor (Henry VIII) fans, so this book should fit us to a T! We're both very excited to read it.

I really liked this book. Everyone I have talked to including myself says it starts slow, so give it a little bit and I'm sure you'll be sucked in as well! :)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments We finished Warchild and both gave it four stars. Felicia plans to read the next book in the series; at this point I don't. I would, though, still recommend it. It's a solid SF book, and I'm always looking for new genre fiction written by women (#readwomen2014!).

message 24: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Has anyone else finished their books yet? What did you think?

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It felt a little drawn out, but it was an interesting mystery. I watched both film versions afterwards, and I liked the American one better although both changed things that were in the book. I will be reading at least the next book in the trilogy.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Louisa and I read The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters. Both of us finished it during the first week of October, but Louisa has been in the hospital and just got back with final comments to me this week.

We both liked this book and gave it 4 stars, though we did agree that we liked Fingersmith more. Sarah has a Gothic style with many interesting twists. We've both read at least 5 of her books, all rated 4 or 5 stars.

We wouldn't want to spoil this book for other readers, but let's just say it starts with a war widow and her adult daughter taking in "paying guests" to make ends meet. The daughter soon becomes involved with the young couple who move in, and that relationship has some devastating consequences. We definitely recommend it.

Kathryn | 581 comments Anita and I read The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy - all 700+ pages and enjoyed it. I felt that it started out quite slow, and with mostly unlikeable characters, it was a challenge to get through the first 4 or 5 chapters. But it picked up after that, some of the characters improved, and I found the third and final section of the book raced along quickly. The story continues in A Modern Comedy which we are considering reading as well, but not for a little while - perhaps next year.

Claire (claire6452) | 718 comments Karina and I both really liked The Book Thief. We agreed that the choice of narrator was both original and helpful in moving the story forward without it becoming too emotional.

I'm really glad this was our choice, as this is among the best books I've read this year.

I liked that book when I read it. The original Swedish title directly translated would be 'Men who hate women'. I don't like how the English translations of the titles have made it seem like the book is all about Lisbeth, when Michael is just as much, maybe even more, a part of it.
Anyway, are you planning on reading the follow-ups? I did, but I definitely liked the first one best.

I loved this book. It's so beautiful. And I agree with your thoughts on the narrator. At first I thought it was a little pfft, but then I quickly grew to like it. (:

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments The Book Thief was such a beautiful book. It's the only book I can recall having SUCH an emotional response to. I sobbed.

Felicia, I'm so glad you told me about the original Swedish title because I was wondering why in the world they named the book after Lisbeth. She wasn't even the main character! That original title makes much more sense. I have started the next book. It's starting out slowly although it's nice that it picks up right after the first book. Hopefully things will pick up soon!

Mahsa Ghoraian | 72 comments I totally agree with every one's comments on The Book Thief.I cried my eyes out on some chapters! One of the best books so far!

It's been a while since I read them, so I can't really remember what I liked about the first one than I didn't about the others. (:
The second one has the real title, and the third one's original title would translate to: The castle in the air that was blown up - which I've never been able to understand. Maybe you can explain when you finish it (:

message 35: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (lilsherry) | 721 comments It's already November and I guess my twin didn't get to write a review so I will.

Mahsa and I read When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Mahsa and I both agree that it was an okay average book; not much to get excited about. It has an interesting plot where a British boy was raised in Shanghai with his parents. One day his parents disappeared and it changed the course of his live. He returns 20 years later to find out what really happens.

Mahsa says "It was OK and I had a fun time reading it,BUT let's say that it's not my favourite book." In the beginning Mahsa liked the book and said it was very interesting while I had to force myself to get through the book. But I guess the ending wasn't what we wanted or expected which is why Mahsa seemed to change her mind from interesting to ok. I didn't like it at all and that we both picked it because of the author. I was expecting something better like his other work Never Let Me Go.
