This book was hilarious and moving. Anyone going through any kind of midlife crisis will be able to relate to Bernadette. The characters are extreme, but that is because Where'd you Go, Bernadette is essentially a satire. If you are considering reading the book, check out a companion recipe for Cheesecake Brownies with BLACKBERRY swirl here: -... . You'll also find book club questions if your book club is reading it.
I really loved Maria Semple's unique format for the book. She uses emails, faxes, receipts, etc. to tell the story. It was really fresh and timely-so similar to the paper stories we are telling in our own lives.
Here's a quick summary I wrote: When agoraphobic Bernadette Fox disappears, her daughter, Bee, collects every form of correspondence she can lay her hands on in order to build a paper trail to her mother. The only problem is that Bernadette may not want to be found. She’s been living a life she never wanted—far from the burgeoning career as a genius architect and the loving marriage to one of Microsoft’s leading developers that she once had. Can Bee trace her way to a mother she’s never really known? And, more importantly, can Bernadette allow herself to be found?
I'd love to hear what you thought about the book and if your book club is reading it or has already read it! What did you think? Anyone out there seen the movie yet? Thoughts? Thanks!
