How Much Do you Write?

In On Writing, Stephen King recommends 1,000 words a day for beginner writers. On your writing days, how much do you usually write? And do you value quality or quantity most?

I can cover 700 to 1,000 on a most mornings. I’m part of that 5:00am club, but I usually only get an hour in. If I’m trying to write around family and folks are talking, it takes about four hours to write 1k words.

When this thread was new, I did a minimum of 4hrs/day. First draft would be anywhere between 500-3000 words. Second draft, 2000 words/day - on good days.

I tend to work by time, and just use word count for an overview how how I've been doing. Guess that makes me a 'quality' person. I know it's a low-production day when I find myself thinking with forehead-in-palm.

Right now though, this has all stopped because I needed to figure out self-publishing and setting up an author platform... whew. Can't wait to get back to actual writing, but gotta deal with publishing first.

I started with 1000 words a day, but that was a lot for me. I can reach it on a good day though. Usually I get 500 words in, so I can finished a good sized novel in about 6 months. Granted the 500 is with the day job, but when I can do this full time, I'd like to reach 1000 a day.

When writing my novel The Step DownI wrote by scenes. So i'd start writing the scene that i had in my head, and wouldn't stop till it was finished. It was like being lost in a zone of creativity, and before I knew it between 2000 to 2500 words were done.

At present, working on new book and trying to master marketing, i'm finding it a real grind to reach 1000 words a day.

I think a lot, almost all if i'm being honest, is because i don't believe what i'm writing, it's not enjoyable, so its no flowing like it should.

But when it comes, which it will, i'm going to hold that feeling and run with it.
