Sarah Pace (space1138) | 127 comments Hiya Book-Bots!

Sheri was so kind as to let me start a discussion thread to nominate picks for our next group read. Can we try to have a group of good suggestions ready in the next week or two so we can vote on a finalist?

Rules for suggestions:

1) Please don't just list books you're planning to read. Give a sentence or two on why you think we should read a book as a book club.

2) If you made a suggestion before, please re-submit it for this time to be included. There were a bunch of really good ones suggested last time, too!

3) If someone already listed something you like/what you would suggest, you can "vote " for it by adding support. You can add your own reasoning why you think we should read it.

After that, we'll gather up the books that have the most support and put them into a proper poll for the final selection.

Happy reading!

Jen W. (piratenami) | 353 comments In the spirit of Halloween, I would nominate The Twisted Ones. I've been seeing people rave about it everywhere, and I love T. Kingfisher, and I would enjoy having discussions with a group while reading it.

Samantha Ferrins | 8 comments I want to throw in a vote for A Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

Its a lovely, (mostly) cheerful book about people (of many different species and cultures) living in deep space and how they get along with cultural differences/difficult events etc. Its one of my all time favourite books, and it reminds me of firefly in a couple of ways (specifically in the relationships between characters)

Samantha Ferrins | 8 comments I would also like to add a suggestion for the Broken Earth Trilogy (Starting with Fifth Season) Its a fantasy book that deals with some beautifully dealt with heavy themes, wonderful world building and is written from the perspective of a WOC.

(I suggested this last month too - I hope thats okay!)

Sarah Pace (space1138) | 127 comments Ohhhh... good stuff so far!

In the last round, someone recommended Ella Minnow Pea: A Novel in Letters, and I'd like to nominate it again! It's really creatively executed wordplay (lipogram) built around story involving a significant dystopian plot that I'd really love to dissect and mull over with a group!

Yes! I had "feelings" about the how Chambers ended this that really wound up coloring my opinion of the book as a whole. It'd be great to be able to mull this over in a discussion where spoilers aren't an issue!

Megan | 244 comments I would definitely be down with The Broken Earth Trilogy: The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, The Stone Sky.

Just to put another option out there, I would also suggest The Tiger at Midnight, because it is relatively short, and is based in Indian/Hindu mythology and culture, which are fairly underrepresented in popular American books.

I have read both A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet (in fact just finished it last week), and the Broken Earth series, but they were both really good. I think they'd both leave stuff to talk about, so I'd support either.

the Tiger at Midnight sounds really interesting though, I'd love to read it!

Kathy Klinich | 175 comments Wasn't sure when we are voting, but I am enjoying The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal and think many of you would too. Alternate history, set in the 50s, strong woman lead character who is trying to be the first female astronaut. It's won a bunch of awards.

Daisy Swaffer | 12 comments I’d like to add a vote for The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal as that sounds great!

Sarah Pace (space1138) | 127 comments Sheri or Stephanie- we've got some great suggestions here! I think one of you as a mod will need to be the one to put it in poll form so we can vote, though. I know you're both super busy, but would you be able to help with that when you get a chance?

Hi, sorry for the delay!

I went ahead and put everything in the poll since there weren't that many overall suggestions. Here it is, I'll send out a group broadcast as well.

Ok the top two books are tied. I’m going to put just those two in a poll and run again. Sorry, I was hoping it’d un-even out on its own if I left a couple more days

Hi all, in the time it took for me to get totally distracted from making a poll, one book did get ahead by one vote. So what are people's thoughts? Do another poll because the top two are so close, or just go with the one that is now one vote ahead?

I'd be happy to go with the top one, the next closest could become a de-facto option for next times poll?

Megan | 244 comments I like Samantha’s idea - and maybe since the one at the top isn’t as long as the last one, we could even do the next poll sooner, like just after the new year.

Jen W. (piratenami) | 353 comments I agree with Samantha's and Megan's suggestions - I like the idea of going with the top one, but the second place is automatically up for the next poll.

Ok, in the interest of just moving this along, we'll do that!

No problem :) Sorry I'm slow sometimes! Feel free to mention something in the check ins or send a message if you notice I'm not getting another selection going, it's entirely possible I lost track of time and forgot about it. I'll try to get some reading questions up this week before I forget about those haha.
