Beth Ann (bagrover) I got a jury notice a few weeks ago and I was actually excited because I was all like great, I can sit for a few hours and read my book without my daughter pestering me all the time. However, I got another letter in the mail telling me that I can't have my cell phone, duh, knew that, had to dress business casual, sucks when all you wear is scrubs or "mom" wear every day, and then NO READING MATERIAL!!! AAHHHHH!!!! My husband thinks I'm nuts because I am freaking out! I just don't know what else I'm going to do but just sit there and wait! That's just terrible, and WAY to much time for me to just think about things, and that's just plain dangerous, lol! I understand no newspapers or magazines, but a book! That's just terrible! LOL! Thought I would share my madness with you all!

Kandice If you are allowed to have an I-Pod or MP3 player you can take an audio book or three.

message 3: by Beth Ann (new)

Beth Ann (bagrover) No, can't have those either, it's a total bummer. I have been listening to Eat, Pray, Love on my MP3 player, it would be good to be able to listen to that for a bit there too, but no. They want Jury Duty to be as unpleasant as possible, lol!

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Have your work send a notice that they can't spare you... That's what I did!

Felicia A Sullivan (ftjazgal) Leave the country? I can live without the cell phone, the casual clothes and a whole host of other things, but I would have to leave the country and go on the lam if I was told I could not have a book OR an ipod. That's just cruel and unusual punishment.

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments This happens to me A LOT for some reason--Jury Duty.

First--I've seen people wear everything from business suits to jeans and T-shirts to Jury Duty. I personally feel that it is respectful to wear a skirt or NON-denim trousers and nice top---you don't have to wear stockings or heels but closed-toed shoes (like a pair of flats or loafers) are a little dressier than sandals. Though the last time I went, which was only two months ago, I wore a sweet pair of Christian Louboutin platform wedge sandals in leopard pony hair! This may be why I got recused, come to think of it.

Second--electronic devices, definitely NOT. However, my experience has been that it is OK to read a book in the Jury Room. A lot of Jury Duty is sitting around waiting; I always tuck a book into my bag and once the formalities are over and the waiting begins I just casually take it out and start reading. I've never been reprimanded for this so I have to assume it's OK. Of course you may NOT read in the Courtroom because you are supposed to be paying attention to the proceedings. I have done Jury Duty where there was a TV in the Jury Room but you're pretty much stuck watching whatever silly daytime talkshow is on, unless you have to nerve to get up and change the channel.

I'm a nurse, too, BTW, so I completely understand about the whole "scrubs" thing.

Good luck!!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) No books?? When I did Jury Duty recently, we were allowed to have books in the Jury waiting room, but not if we got called into a courtroom for questioning. Then we had to put everything away and listen to the proceedings.

Maybe there is someone to call for clarification?

Good Luck.

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) I had jury duty once (a murder trial) and I took a book with me every day. While everyone else went out for lunch, I sat in the jury room and read my book. I can't imagine why they would say no reading material!

Personally, I would bring a large purse and stick a book inside. What's the worst that will happen? They'll discover the book and send you home?

I had jury duty once, thankfully it only lasted a day. It was quite boring, and I, too, brought a book with me for when I went out to lunch.

Do you knit? Crochet? Anything?

The last time my father had jury duty he took a pack of cards and played poker with some of the other folks in the same boat.

message 11: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) I would take a book or two. My dh had jury duty and he took a crossword puzzle book to pass the time.

Due to security probably not allowed any sharp objects. Needles would be out, I know they are where we live. But to ban books?

message 13: by Meredith (new)

Meredith (meredithgayle) | 32 comments I got called for Jury Duty once many years ago, and the Jury Waiting Room had a small library, but I had my knitting with me. This was quite a few years before 9-11-01. I alsmot got picked for a murder trial, but the lawyers for both sides released me. Thank God.

message 14: by Tammy AZ (new)

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) I can understand not having books if you get picked for a trial but in the waiting room???? I'd pick up a cheap book that you don't care if they confiscate & take it with me anyway. It would be horrible to show up & realize they will let you read while waiting & then not have a book.
