Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture by Ytasha L. Womack

I wanted to learn more about diversity in sci fi and fantasy - as a minority science fiction writer myself, it seems important to know about diversity within the genre, where it springs from, and how it has developed. Hugely interesting, and I feel like I've learnt a lot about afrofuturism and believe it will be influencing some of my work.

Read a nonfiction book that makes you feel wiser.
As a graduate student in biology, I hear a lot about how the world of medicine is changing - going digital and becoming more patient-driven. So I picked up one of the most talked about non-fiction medicine books: The Patient Will See You Now: The Future of Medicine is in Your Hands by Dr. Eric Topol. It's an interesting read and I definitely learned a lot about about the movement make medicine more patient-driven, but I didn't agree with everything Dr. Topol wrote about, which I guess is a good thing because it got me to think about my role as someone who works in biology.

Catie | 185 comments After deliberately taking the slow train into London today so that I'd have time to finish reading Emma...

50.1 - Teri-K's task: Let's Start the New Year Off Right

1) Close, But Not Quite - Read a book you wanted to read for this challenge but that didn't quite fit the requirements for the task.

Howards End is on the Landing: A Year of Reading from Home by Susan Hill

I wanted to read this for 30.8 Option 1 (Read a book with the main page genre "books about books") - but at only 234 pages, I was 16 pages short of the 250 page requirement.

2) Try, Try Again - Read a book you started once upon a time but didn't finish.

Emma by Jane Austen

I started Emma in March 2014, as my book club picked it for the month, but as I graduated university in June last year, it rather got abandoned in favour of things like "studying for final exams" and "writing my dissertation" - according to goodreads, I'd got to page 115 by the beginning of May '14 - and then rather gave up on it.

(also according to goodreads, I originally marked the book as read when I first added it - this was either a mistake or an attempt to look better read than I really am, as this was my first time reading the whole book through!)

3) Jump on the Bandwagon - Pick a book from GoodReads Best Book of the Year 2014 nominees and winners.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

This book was nominated in the Young Adult fiction category, and was not a reread.

Jenny Han is a ŷ author, one ticket claimed.

The Hour of Peril: The Secret Plot to Murder Lincoln Before the Civil War by Daniel Stashower

Fits task 5.2: History as a genre.
Fits task 10.5: I find Lincoln a fascinating historical person. It blew my mind that he was nearly assassinated *before* he every reached the White House. Plus, this case featured the first female American spy. So much to learn about!
