The Shustermans alternate between four different narrators—Alyssa, Kelton, Jacqui, and Henry—and brief “snapshots that focus on other people. Why do you think they chose to use this format? What do the different voices add to your understanding of the story? What do the snapshots add to the overall narrative of the book? Which characters or snapshots did you find most compelling? Have you read any other books that were told in alternating voices?

Katelin | 33 comments Books with alternating voices are popular, but I'm really not sure how I feel about them in general. The differing points of view are sometimes nice, but I'm more likely to get lost in the timeline.

That said, I did really like the snapshots of scenes that didn't directly involve the core group of kids. It showed how the rest of the community was reacting to the tap out.

Michelle | 14 comments I think they chose this format to give a more rounded view/experience of the situation. The different voices add to the perspective of the story, we get to see from "sheep and wolves" views of the situation. If we read the story from only one character's perception of the situation the story would not have the same impact.

I have read books that were told in alternating voices. They have to be done well for it to work. I've even listened to audio books told in alternating voices. With this it is important to have two narrators so that listeners don't get lost.

I did enjoy the snapshot scenes so that we could see how other people throughout the area were reacting and handling the situation. It was nice to see outside of the main characters' perspectives.

Thank you for your response Michelle. The audio book version of this book was great for hearing all of the different voices and perspectives, and it made it easier to follow the story.
