Share with us what you are reading this month, and what did you think?

message 2: by Christine (new)

Christine | 636 comments I just finished Here and Now and Then which I did enjoy and recommend. Next up is Gods of Jade and Shadow

message 3: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1199 comments Read Probability Sunand it grabbed me a lot faster than the previous book.

Started Probability Space. It's started out in a very different direction than I initially anticipated.

Started How Long 'til Black Future Month? last night.

I finished and really enjoyed Becoming and now I am halfway through The Starless Sea. It's lovely and dreamlike, just like The Night Circus. I have The Calculating Stars to start next.

I am about 1/3 through A Plague of Swords, book 4 in Miles Cameron’s Traitor Son series. So far, really good! Next up is Casket of Souls by Lynn Flewelling, part of her Nightrunner series.

message 7: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 414 comments Currently reading Foundryside and about to start The Calculating Stars. My library checkout of the audiobook of Executive Orders expired, so I swapped over to the audiobook of Dangerous Women.

I finished The Starless Sea last night and really loved it. It's a confusing book that's told in a non-linear way, but the structure is part of the tale. It's lovely.

Just started The Calculating Stars and am already hooked!

message 10: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1199 comments Finished Probability Space last night.
I ended up enjoying where the series went.

Started Everything About You this morning.

message 11: by Kari (new)

Kari | 119 comments I just finished up The Stone Sky which I kept putting off because I didn't want it to end. Jemisin's world-building is just epic and incredible. Next up will be Six of Crows.

Christine, I saw that Gods of Jade and Shadow was nominated for a Nebula. I hope you report back what you think!

I was a bit disappointed. I felt like the book had a message, but the author wasn't exactly sure what it should be. At the end, a resolution came pretty much from out of nowhere, which annoys the utter crap out of me.

Not bad, but not necessarily good either.

Megan | 14 comments So far this month, I've read:
Ophelia - not really SF/F, but very well-written and enjoyable.
Half of a Yellow Sun - the exact opposite of Fantasy, but so good.
Legend - quite reminiscent of Divergent and Hunger Games, but a lot of fun.

Currently Reading: Just One Day - not SF/F, but well-written.

Currently Listening To: Mobituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving - also not SF/F, but I love Mo.

message 15: by Sue (new)

Sue Burke (sueburke) | 10 comments I just finished Rogue Moon and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed: a lot of long monologues about what it means to be a man (that is, a traditionally masculine human being), a lot of foolish arguments about who gets to be the alpha male, and not much science fiction.

message 16: by Christine (new)

Christine | 636 comments I finished Gods of Jade and Shadow which I recommend; I am about to start Spin the Dawn

Casket of Souls ended up to be a 6/10 for me. While there were lots of scenes in the book that I enjoyed, I felt like one major thread of the plot got pushed off to the side and the other took way too long to be solved—Alex and Seregil just didn’t seem to have their heads really into either of the two main mysteries.

I am now reading Finity's End by C.J. Cherryh, part of her Union-Alliance Universe and /or her Company Wars books. I am only about a quarter into it, but already it is one of my favorites.

message 19: by Kari (new)

Kari | 119 comments I just started Six of Crows and my god the ratings are so high! It's very well-written and interesting so far! But I can't get over the protagonists being teenagers. Maybe I don't read YA that much so I don't understand (or am just officially Too Old to get it), but these kids act like they're in their 40s complete with sad and sordid backstories that happened what? like six months ago? And it's been reeeeally hard getting past that.

Kari, I read that one and was kind of meh about it. I've read better YA, I don't think it's about your age!

I loved The Calculating Stars and am on to some nonfiction with Infinite Powers: How Calculus Reveals the Secrets of the Universe, because that's the kind of nerd I am :)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 174 comments Infinite Powers is great!!

message 22: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1199 comments Since I was so blown away by The Last Conversation, I decided I needed to try some other works by the same author.

So, I got The Cabin at the End of the World.

I was worried about it being a thriller. I'm about as fond of most thrillers as I am action, not at all.

But, the book was very well done. Excellent characters, interesting plot, drew me along way more than I expected it to do so. I was happily impressed.

Nest up: A Head Full of Ghosts

Finity's End by C.J. Cherryh was a 10. Just an excellent book all around—three dimensional characters, a good blend of small, personal tales against a larger interstellar story.

Christine | 636 comments Enjoyed Spin the Dawn
Now starting The Light Brigade
The library is closed, but digital collection available so all is well

Random (rand0m1s) | 1199 comments Finished A Head Full of Ghosts. I'm really liking this author.

Starting Interference this evening.

Still haven't finished How Long 'til Black Future Month? :(
Maybe this weekend

Atlanta (dark_leo) | 32 comments Abandons gate by James s.a. Corey, book 3 of the expanse. I saw the series first.

I finished Infinite Powers: How Calculus Reveals the Secrets of the Universe yesterday and recommend it to any math nerds in the group who might be looking for nonfiction! You don't need to have had a calculus class to understand the book, I don't think.

I'm re-reading The Lions of Al-Rassan now. I needed something that I knew would be beautiful.

message 31: by Christine (last edited Mar 24, 2020 12:17PM) (new)

Christine | 636 comments I put aside The Light Brigade as it seemed too much war; as I reread the synopsis, I may pick it up again. In the meantime, all of my library books are now due April 30th so no worries. I've started on Bloodchild and Other Stories

message 33: by Atlanta (new)

Atlanta (dark_leo) | 32 comments Still struggling through abaddons gate.

message 34: by Kari (new)

Kari | 119 comments I've been slowly making my way through The Once and Future King (for the first time, finally!), and am torn. Some parts are just downright brilliant and others feel... weird? and off? I know that's just the style of the story, but it feels like it works better in some places than others.

In case anyone who hasn’t read this wants to try it, the ebook is on sale for US$1.99 at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Apple Books.

Random (rand0m1s) | 1199 comments Wasn't able to concentrate on Interference
Its me, not the book. Mood thing again

Instead I decided I'm going to try starting Rosewater likely at some point this evening.

I read the concluding book in Irene Radford’s Dragon Nimbus History series, The Renegade Dragon. 5/10. This book made explicit the SF elements the author has hinted at in previous books. There are things I liked about it, but somehow the whole was not greater than the parts.

Lee Child’s Worth Dying For was next, a decent Jack Reacher book with a high body count but no graphic torture (plenty was implied, however). 7/10.

One more thriller before I get into the fantasy and SF books I need to read in April for various groups. Sleep No More by Greg Iles is up next.

I'm still in re-read mode - I finished The Lions of Al-Rassan and have now been re-reading all of the A Wrinkle in Time series. I'll see if I'm in the mood for something new next.
