Jessy (jollybookshelf) Week 3: A book turned into a movie
January 15-21, 2015

It's week three of our reading challenge! It's nice to see those New Year's resolutions going strong. We all know Hollywood takes inspiration from some amazing books. Hunger Games, Fifty Shades of Gray, and Harry Potter all come to mind. This week's challenge is to read a book that has made it to the big screen! Reward yourself with movie night at the end of the week. Good luck! ^_^

How to Create a Topic:
1. Choose your book and create a topic in the appropriate folder using your book's author and title.

2. In the body of your post, comment about why you chose this book. Have you read it before? What are your expectations?

3. Feel free to use the thread as a way to update the group on your progress. Also, when you are finished reading, add a small review and your thoughts about the week's challenge.

4. Comment on everyone else's posts as well! Participation and group involvement will make this challenge so much fun!

**If you chose the same book as another group member, do not create a duplicate thread.**

Week 3 Recommendations: (taken from Listopia)
The "I Only Watched the Movie!" Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ group has over 800 books on it!
The "Best Book to Movie Adaptations" Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ group has over 250 books on it!

Haven't quite decided which book for this week. We actually have a few options on our bookcases (trying to buy as few books as possible). So far TRUE GRIT and ENDERS GAME are in the running.

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Britteny - I can't say much for True Grit, but Ender's Game is a great book. I read it in high school. I'm not one for those kinds of books but I loved it.

I liked a lot Ender's Game too and was disappointed by the movie. The 1st one is a light read, the next books are more philosophical ones (for me, they are not true sequels even if some characters are the same).
Maybe I'll go for The Maze Runner (currently reading). I read almost all the YA dystopian books which became a movie (trailers are a good to-read list) so it's hard to find something new.

misplacedselchie | 347 comments I loved the Maze Runner movie but couldn't stand the book. It just annoyed me lol

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
I totally can understand that! I'm finding it pretty shallow and the characters are annoying, but I like the maze idea and how the story is built. I haven't high expectations on this one as I'm only searching distraction so it's an easy read. Hunger Games, Ender's Game or The Giver were way better & deep ;)

message 7: by Frits (new)

Frits | 6 comments i think im going for brokeback mountain. seen the movie, never read the book. thought the movie to be a bit overrated.
but maybe not just my kind of movie.
will give the book a go.

message 8: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Frits, I had no idea that was a book! I think the movie is considered just groundbreaking (ya know, sensitive topic and all). Sounds like an interesting read though!

Zaz, Ender's Game is getting a lot of love in this group. I may add it to my list!!!

message 9: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Hmmm, I too might go with Ender's Game, just need to order it from the library. I also have The Golden Compass, which I haven't read, but not feeling like reading it at the moment. I also have The Help, but it's so thick I think I'll pass it, my January is a bit too full already to accommodate another chunkster.

I haven't read The Golden Compass or Ender's Game (I'm actually planning on squeezing that one in somewhere during the challenge), but I have read The Help. If you like historical fiction, it is a really wonderful read. The characters are flawed so perfectly, they feel real and you become so attached to them. It tugged at me weeks after I read it.

I'm certain I will read it eventually, if for no other reason than that I own it. I know it comes highly recommended. But my copy has 620 pages (it's a Finnish translated edition) and I just don't have time for it in January.

Abhishek | 25 comments If someone is still looking for a book for this week, I would highly recommend The Kite Runner, closely followed by The Namesake.

message 13: by Toni A. (new)

Toni A. (teeatfore) I will begin the challenge with Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I selected it because it was very recently released as a movie and Reese Witherspoon is the lead so if I like the book, I may want to see the movie as well.

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Koehler | 50 comments I would also recommend either The Kite Runner or The Book Thief. Both are fantastic books!

message 15: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Weaver-morales | 19 comments Anyone want to read Unbroken??? Or when should that book fall?

Bam cooks the books (bamcooks) I want to read Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote for this challenge. I've never seen the movie either!

I read The Kite Runner for this week, I loved it!

Megan Rosenfield | 4 comments I'm going to read Fight Club. I've seen the movie tons of times so I want to try the book now! Has anyone read it?

message 19: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh (ashleighsbookshelf) Thinking I'm going to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. One of my friends bought me the full box set for my birthday so I think it's about time to read them!

So I was waffling back and forth between a couple books for this week but I believe I've finally settled on True Grit. (Sorry, can't link on my Kindle app.) Something different than normal and I heard the movie was really good. :-)

Bam, Breakfast at Tiffany's is one of my all time favorite flicks! My fiance is Asian so he always jokes with me about how terrible Mickey Rooney's overtly racist portrayal of a Japanese man in the film is. I've not read the book either. I'm going to be reading it for the book you can finish in a day challenge.

Bam cooks the books (bamcooks) Oh, that's so funny, Michelle! Can't wait to read it, then watch the movie.

message 23: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Hi everyone! Week 3 challenge- I'm reading Memoirs of a Geisha.

message 24: by Cristina (new)

Cristina (cristina_urs) | 23 comments I rather keep it in the same note as I have started so, for this challenge I'll be chosing The Da Vinci Code

Miriam (miriamk) Megan wrote: "I'm going to read Fight Club. I've seen the movie tons of times so I want to try the book now! Has anyone read it?"

Fight Club is a great book. There are some big differences from the film version. Personally, I preferred the ending of the film to the way the book ends.

If anyone is still looking for a book for this week and really likes mysteries check out The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver. The book is really great...but I hated the movie. They changed how the book portrays certain characters--I'll just put it that way. (If you wanna know more message me.) The book is excellent though! It was the first book by Jeffery Deaver that I read and I've been a fan of his ever since!

Whitney Ogle | 4 comments This is Where I Leave You

I actually just finished this book prior to stumbling across this group. This is Where I Leave You was a book that I actually had no expectations about. Saw the trailer for the movie and then stumbled across the book at Target and decided to read it. It was surprisingly good! I laughed, cried, and laughed some more. It was a lighter read than Gone Girl which was a book that had me frustrated and angry most of the way through it. Definitely enjoyed this book and the movie as well :) I am a firm believer in reading the book prior to the movie. How I envision various parts of every book I read are often not how directors portray them in films!

message 28: by Daisie (new)

Daisie (daisie4100) I'm sorry, I accidentally posted a thread for a book that someone else did. This was my first time and I forgot that rule.

Britteny - Brittbetweenthepages (brittbetweenthepages) | 194 comments Mod
Daisie You can go in, copy your statement, delete the post and then paste your statement to the original post. Or you can go ahead and post on the original post (by the other participant) and one of us mods can close off your topic. :-)

And it happens. I believe on the right you can search to see if someone else is reading the book (in the future) to help keep duplicates at bay. :-) (if that book is being read in different weeks, when you click on a link up towards the top it will tell you what week that specific post is for so that you can keep it with what week YOU want.)

Hope that helps. :-)

London (itslondon) | 3 comments Hello everyone. I'm having a hard time deciding what book to read for week three. Does anyone have any suggestions? I haven't read many books that turned into movies.

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
Hello London :)
What genre do you want to read?

message 32: by London (new)

London (itslondon) | 3 comments Hi Zaz :)
I'm open to any genre for this week's selection.

message 33: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Van Beveren | 93 comments Skipped a little and just finished week 3 but am now going back to week 2. Just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The movie is coming out soon and can't wait to see how the develop this character. The mind of the boy in this book is fascinating. Definitely a good read!

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
London if you don't search a particular genre, you can have a look at the threads already created in the week3 folder and join one ;)
Or read the different plans, or use the links on the 1st post of this thread.

message 35: by London (new)

London (itslondon) | 3 comments Thank you Zaz. I just viewed a list of books that turned into movies in 2014 and I think I'm going to go with Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin.

message 36: by Diane (new)

Diane Coto (fictionzeal) | 60 comments I found something rather interesting (and reportedly humorous). It's: A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson. Just not sure how accessible the book will be.

message 37: by SaraFair (last edited Jan 15, 2015 04:43AM) (new)

SaraFair I am reading Tarzan of the Apes as I needed to read something already on the bookshelf at home, and something not too long. I really like Edgar Rice Burroughs' phrasing (very English and proper) and its an easy read. The Disney animated film is the closest to it so far, believe it or not! Perhaps because with animation they could really tell the ape portion of the story.

message 38: by Cait (new)

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments Sara, I never realised that the animation was closer to the book than any other version. I've always wondered if it was, think I need to read the book at some point. :-)

message 39: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannonamelia) | 19 comments The Man in the Iron Mask is my choice. I haven't yet read weeks one and two, though! Yikes!

message 40: by Teressa (new)

Teressa | 12 comments Does the book we pick have to already have a movie version already released? I was going to pick a book called paper towns but the movie won't be in theaters until Spring.

Bam cooks the books (bamcooks) Michelle wrote: "Bam, Breakfast at Tiffany's is one of my all time favorite flicks! My fiance is Asian so he always jokes with me about how terrible Mickey Rooney's overtly racist portrayal of a Japanese man in the..."

@Michelle: I finally watched the movie yesterday. It was terrific, so much more romantic than the novella and loved the happy ending! And your fiance was so right about Mickey Rooney's portrayal of the Japanese neighbor. Yikes!

If the movie is scheduled but not released, the book is ok for this week ;)

message 43: by Philip (new)

Philip Inegbedion The Hobbit I just watched the movie after I read the book. Well although the movie was quite good I don't think it did justice to the book

message 44: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 225 comments Went with Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton for this week. :)

message 45: by Rona (new)

Rona (ronadareader) I am currently reading Gone Girl for this week.. :) Haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know how it ends. I hope the ending is good!
