That's comforting. I feel a lot better now.

Kandice | 4383 comments My ranking would be:

The Life of Chuck
Mr. Harrigan's Phone
If It Bleeds
Rat

Did you enjoy The Troop? I read it, and while I enjoyed it, I felt like Cutter resorted to the gross out, as opposed to real horror, near the end.

I did enjoy The Troop. I posted a link to my review over on the "what are you reading now" thread.

I'm sure a lot of people have after reading that story.

That's exactly what I was referring to!

Derrick | 950 comments I thought Mr. Harrigan's Phone was a neat little story. I think King likes to write about relationships between children and adults.

message 162: by Derrick (new)

Derrick | 950 comments Just finished The Life of Chuck. I really liked that one. The premise is an oldie but a goodie. It almost read like an episode of The Twilight Zone. In fact, I am remembering a specific episode with a similar premise. I may have been a tad hasty before when I said my money was on the Holly story as my favorite. The Life of Chuck is going to be very tough to beat. I do love me some Holly though so we'll just have to see what happens....

I loved the life of chuck too, the structure was a little unusual but the premise was really sound. and there were some great "fun" moments, which King does especially well.

Yes I thought the structure was very Tarantinoesque which I also loved.

Derrick | 950 comments I'm really enjoying the If It Bleeds story. Super cool being back in that world. I'm loving all the references to Mr. Mercedes and The Outsider. I think I might have an idea where the story is going. We'll see if I'm right or not....

Yes, Holly and the gang...honestly, I wasn't expecting to get Jerome and Barbara and Pete and Ralph in addition to Holly. So that was a nice surprise. This is turning out to be really good and I know I'm going to wish it was longer. I wanted to cry when Holly tells Bill (view spoiler)

Derrick | 950 comments I've finished the If It Bleeds story. I really enjoyed reading it. I was practically glowing the whole time I was reading it. Holly and Jerome were awesome as always. I wonder if King has one more Holly story left in him. I sure hope so!
Just the last story in the book left to go which I've already started. Shockingly, this one seems to be about a writer. I'm excited to see what happens....

If they were able to produce films these days, I think we would see this story in a new season of THE OUTSIDER, but we may have to wait a while because of the shutdown.

message 174: by Derrick (new)

Derrick | 950 comments Finished with the book. I thought all four stories were really good. As promised here's my ranking of them;
#4 Mr. Harrigan's Phone
#3 Rat
#2 The Life of Chuck
#1 If It Bleeds
In the end it was really a coin toss for the number one spot. The Life of Chuck was so great but my love for Holly conquers all. I was glad to read King loves her too....

message 175: by Charles (new)

Charles | 96 comments I agree with your top 2 Derrick. The Life Of Chuck seems to be a divisive story, but for me it may very well be the story with the most long term impact, but of course, anything with Holly will always be special.

Thanks Erin. Hope they pick it up... and, for that matter, they pick up Mr. Mercedes for a fourth season, though that would require an original story since they've used up the trilogy.

I hope so (for both) though I did read AT&T is thinking of no longer doing their own original series but if that is the case, I hope another network picks up Mr. Mercedes.

message 183: by Glen (new)

Glen | 229 comments I’ve read the first two stories. Mr.Harrigan’s phone was fun and had great character building between the boy and old man.
The Life of Chuck......this story really dives much deeper than I think people are realizing. Each person has a world in their mind, a universe that responds and is dependent upon its host. Each soul who carries memories carries a universe for those who live inside those memories and their world ends when the host of that world moves on. The philosophical and hypotheticals are endless. Just sit their and dissect what King has implied. It’s pretty mind blowing.
Can’t wait to read the last two stories. So far this novel is a win.

Great summary of "Life of Chuck" Glen. Probably like most, this one threw me off on first reading and I didn't have an appreciation for the themes and how the story format reveals. This short story deserves that second read and a little reflection for those reasons.

message 185: by Glen (new)

Glen | 229 comments I agree Patrick it was told backwards so it was a little jarring and confusing as to how the story was ending up. However if they recall the ending they can see how each persons reality can affect those people who exist in that person’s mind. It’s almost a Plato type allegory of the cave and how one persons reality may not be reality at all if that’s the only reality they know or have been exposed to. I’d love to see this short story analyzed.

Marie | 9 comments I read this about a month ago and loved it! :) The story I loved the most out of all of them was Mr. Harrigan's Phone. It was creepy but emotional at the same time.

message 187: by Book Nerd (new)

Book Nerd (book_nerd_1) | 91 comments I just finished this. I really liked the weirdness of The Life of Chuck Part 3.
The ending of If It Bleeds was great but I was ticked off that there were spoilers for the Bill Hodges trilogy and The Outsider. But I suppose it's my fault for not having read them by now. Also all the pseudo-profanity got pretty annoying but I guess that suits Holly.

Misty | 31 comments Book Nerd wrote: "Also all the pseudo-profanity got pretty annoying but I guess that suits Holly."

LOL. It definitely fits Holly. I've been using "poopy" a lot since starting the Bill Hodges trilogy!

I loved this set of novellas! There wasn't one that I didn't like. I would rank them this way:
1-If it Bleeds
2-Mr. Harrigan's Phone
3-The Life of Chuck
4-Rat

I really loved the title story. Holly Gibney is a great character. Someone on this thread said they hope King has one more Gibney novel in him, and I heartily agree!

I've attended quite a few panels by author's talking about selling adaptation rights to their books and something comes up often that doesn't seem to be a problem for King.

Author's like Charlaine Harris and Gail Carriger who have built an entire world for their different series to take place have talked about how hard that is since if they sell the rights to one series, they are essentially selling the rights to all of them since they are all of a piece. They say exceptions can be made with a lot of legalese, but that it's hard.

There is Mr. Mercedes on Peacock, The Outisder on HBO and now this on Netflix. That's THREE platforms adapting stories within a year or two of each other about the same character/world by an author. I'd love to know how this works.

message 194: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 85 comments I'm pretty sure they each licensed just 1 book, story or trilogy. It sure would've been nice to have consistency, but maybe only one would've been made. I really liked the actress on Mr. Mercedes, but the one in The Outsider was great too.

I'm also sure of that, but usually when a book is licensed, the characters are included in that license. Since the characters in this case cover not only a series, but some short stories and stand alones, I just wonder how long those contracts must have been!
