I have started to read it three times but somehow have not got very far. But it seems a compelling book, so I hope that this challenge helps me to finally read it.

Jessy (jollybookshelf) 3 times?? Let's hope you finish :) If not you can use it for the "book you started but never finished" week.

Sophie (sawphie) I started this book a few days ago before I joined this group, but it is perfect for this week! Not sure I'll be able to read it in a week though...

English is not my first language, but I find the writing interesting. I don't know yet if beautiful is the right word, but it makes my reading a bit slower than usual.

I'm new to goodreads and would love to discuss books with people :)

Ireene | 36 comments Sophie, English is not my first language either. And I agree with what you said about the writing. It is kind of peculiar and needs a good concentration but it is at the same time very likeable.

Sophie (sawphie) I just finished the first part, at the end of which the situation and the various little stories leading to this situation are resumed. This story is very complex and really excite my curiosity! I'm looking forward to discover the rest and see how astrology fits into it all.

With not even half of the book read in 4 non-work days, I know I won't be able to finish it this week, but I really enjoy it.

message 6: by E (new) - rated it 5 stars

E | 3 comments I just finished this book today and LOVED IT! It's best read quickly--though I did start before joining the challenge, I finished most of it this weekend :)

I thought the same thing, I wanted to read more this weekend because it felt like best-read-quickly book, but I'll have to manage with work.

Sarah Allen (sadie409) Started a week late, but enjoying it so far. Love the setting and characters!

Ireene | 36 comments I finished it almost on time! :)
I gave it five stars. Actually the theme of the book is not something I usually would be interested in. I mean it is kind of a detective story and I usually don´t read these. But I chose it because it won the Man Brooker prize and because I liked the cover of the book. :)
It didn´t give me much emotionally but I really enjoyed the language and the style of writing. I also liked how the story was framed, especially the first part of the book, the pending between present and past, stories of different men etc. And thanks to the exquisite writing it was really easy to imagine 19th century´s setting and people.
All in all it is a great book but it does need concentration and time to read.

Sophie (sawphie) I just finished it, and really liked it. I just found that the end didn't really bring anything new to the story we'd already learnt from other characters, but all in all I found it really good. I wrote a more extensive review, you can check it on my profile, and I would very much like to discuss it further with people who read it.
