I’m just getting started with today’s chapters, and Vine sounds like such a pain in the rump to work with. At one point she asks for information, and when Hark gives it to her accurately, she gets mad at him and tells him he misheard, and he must be mistaken. All because it wasn’t the information she wanted or thought she knew.
I find that behaviour to be so rude and disrespectful in adults, and although psychologically I know it is a simplistic power move of the weaker person trying to look more intelligent, it just ticks me off, as they try to break the confidence of the one who is actually right. So annoying.
It reminds me equally of a scene in Princess of Mars, where John Carter proves that the loyalty of their war beasts can be bought with pleasant conversation and pats on the head for work completed. Vine could learn a lot from him...shame he’s on Barsoom and not at Dunlin’s Beach really.
If you want to look smart, be kind first, and right later.

Yeah, it was all slow and steady until the Flying Dutchman found itself a new Captain in the final seconds.
I love how everything in this section is about the masks we wear to survive. A flick of a switch can reveal dark secrets, and even a physical mask can change who you appear to be to those around you, to the point that faith and humanity are questioned and tested. There is a lot of psychological and philosophical debate on how we judge living, and questions how do we know we are really alive? Is it in our actions, our inactions, or is it a combination of both? Who are we as a result of these movements, and how much of yourself would you sacrifice to be your true self. When it comes down to it, do you even know who you are at all?
