If you're new to readathons, it can be overwhelming at first. You may have a lot of unanswered questions about the event, but hopefully this introductory guide will help you out.

What is a read-a-thon?
A readathon is an event that typically takes place over 24 hours. You are encouraged to read for 24 hours straight. A lot of groups, bookclubs, and websites have their own readathons a few times a year (sometimes with challenges and prizes).

What are the dates?
Our group will be hosting four readathons this year. The year has been split into four 'terms' and a readathon will occur at the end of each term. Specific dates have not been set. When dates are decided, an announcement will be made.

First Term: March 20, 2015 8:00 PM CST
June: TBA
September: TBA
December: TBA

Do I have to stay up for 24 hours?
Of course not! A readathon is supposed to a fun event, not something you dread. Feel free to customize the readathon to fit your needs. Many people just set a goal (ie, read 3 books in the 24 hour period).

Is this required?
Oh heavens no! This is just a fun event for our group to participate in. If you are behind in your readings, this will be a great time to catch up!

Where can I sign up?
When a specfic date is set, an event will be created for the group. You will be able to RSVP through the Events page.

Will there be discussions?
Of course! What kind of Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ group would we be without discussions? During the 24 hour readathon, I will post various questions in the Readathon folder. These threads will be used to discuss goals, update progress, suggest books, and encourage other members.



More information will be added as we move closer to the end of term 1(our first readathon).

I feel as if I have enrolled in a university class. except it is going to be incredibly fun and enriching, without the required grades!

Fabulous, it going to be really fun , reading books 24 hours. I never devoted my full 24 hrs to the things i love most into this world "Book".

Read-a-thons are ridiculously fun! I've participated in them and they're just a bookin' good time. ;) Typically, there are games and mini-challenges, Twitter chats and GoodReads discussions. Plus, as expected, loads of reading! I've never gone the full 24 hours without a little nap mid-day, so don't feel pressure to stay up the WHOLE time. If you can, wow, that's impressive! I like to stock up on some snacks and beverages a day or so before. Light, healthy snacks are really great for keeping you focused and energized for the monumental task. And tea. But, you know, that's mostly because I love tea. ;)

I love Read-a-thons! I couldn't be more thrilled that we'll doing some this year. They're SO. MUCH. FUN.

Well you've been gushing about them, so I just had to do one! :) Everyone can thank you, haha. I hope ours is a lot of fun. I'm sure our 'first term' will have some kinks and quirks, but we'll get through it. Michelle, if you have any suggestions, message me!

Can I read books in another language? I have been meaning to read some kids books in Japanese and listen/read Harry Potter audio and book in Japanese too. I can imagine spending a block of time in a manga-cafe and seeing what I like in the way of magazines etc. too. I live in Tokyo and am at a frustrating plateau in my learning of Japanese. Everyone says read kids books to learn, but I never see to be able to approach it with a sense of fun. This might just be the opportunity I need. Feedback please!

Helen, you can read whatever your heart pleases! Reading Japanese, if you're trying to learn the language, sounds like an excellent idea. :)

In the holidays, this can be a daily occurrence for me anyway(I rally need to learn how to put a book down :-D).

How should people in other timezones (like myself, I'm in GMT +1) accommodate to this, can we do start a couple of hours ahead of the CST time or should we do it acording to the set time? :)

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. I think in my timezone the read-a-thon starts at 2 am on the 21st LOL I was thinking about starting later, like at 8 am on 21st.

Starting at a different time is TOTALLY fine! The other mods and I have been discussing mini games and discussions that may take place during the readathon. If we end up doing something like that, it will happen during the 24 hours that I have set.

Ellie, I just got back from a western Caribbean cruise over Christmas! My daughter and I read SO MUCH; it was AWESOME!! Where are you going?

Last time I did the Dewey Read-a-Thon I wasn't able to participate for the full 24 hours, but I still read as much as I could - I think I put in a good 8 hours - and participated in discussions and blogging while I did. I imagine this time around I'll be doing the same.

Honestly, it will probably be that way for me too.

Sounds like fun! May have to miss out on some the time on Saturday due to kids sporting events but I'll do my best :-)

We're going to Jamaica, Cayman Islands & Cozumel. The day of the read-a-thon, we'll be on a private island. I can picture it now - laying on the beach surrounded by books!

OMG, I am so jealous!!! We went to Key West, Cayman Islands, and Cozumel. How ironic :) Best trip I've ever taken :) :) :) Enjoy your reading voyage, too!

Ellie, that is my version of paradise. :P That sounds really wonderful and I'm super envious! I hope you have a great time.

At first I thought that topic was speaking about tuna, because it is "thon" in French (yes I'm a little stupid, I'm aware). So, tanks for the explanation, it was very helpful! And it is a very good plan. Sadly, I won't be able to participate :( (I don't include the lag in why, I would do it with late) but, must of all, I have class all day along the March 20th and, I have 6 hours of exams on Saturday ... So, this gonna be without me! I'm very sad though, it would be my first one and I was very excited to be part of it. Another time!
But maybe I will read in the "same" time that you but, less longer!

I joined a read a thon at my local library a couple of years ago. The grand prize was a kindle,which I won. However,it was over a 3 month period. It was quite exhilarating.

The timezone is Central Standard Time? I just learned there are other zones for CST!!! Who knew 0.o!!

I'm going to give it a try, could be fun!

This is my first readathon EVER!!! I cannot wait! I'm so excited to have reading back in my life...didn't have time for awhile but now I'm making it a priority!

I've never done a read-a-thon, but at my elementary school we used to have one day that was nothing but reading! We got to wear our pjs and bring sleeping bags and do nothing but read for the whole day, and it was wonderful! :)
