The Woman in the Window
question
Did anyone else really not like this book?

I'm hesitant to be judgemental of books that seem to be really popular. I feel like if they're that popular they must have done something right. I was excited to read this before the movie came out but I found that I really struggled to get through it. I found the main character to be repetitive and predictable. I thought the use of alcohol for an unreliable narrative to be overused. I thought the plot was predictable and I just did not enjoy reading it. Did anyone else feel this way or am I just missing something?
You guys are crazy! This was one of my favorite books . I love books about drunks who just can’t get it together and their choices make for such an interesting read .
I can't see a reason to read it. Everyone that I know that likes it has never seen Rear Window and I can't find anything interesting about it.
So it's Rear Window as a book?... Right?...That's it.
Well I'll just go write my debut novel "Girl in the shower" then.

Way too many words There was a story but it was buried under so much nonsense and over done details

Hated it. Hated the main character. I struggled to finish reading this.

I did not like this book at all.The last 20 pages were engaging. I don't understand the hype about this book at all!

I really enjoyed the book at the start. But I could have told you halfway through what the ending was going to be, it was very obvious but maybe this is due to how many mystery novels I have read. I also read this book right after I read the woman in cabin 10, so of course, this book was going to be a letdown after reading that.
Honestly! This book was so meh. I enjoyed the premise so much. I was so excited to read this one, but could not get over how slow/boring the first like 40 chapters were. I get that it was a character build up and we learned more about the backstory of Anna and how she became who she is now but come on. Even the ending did not satisfy me - was it even somewhat foreshadowed that the 'bad guy' was the bad guy? eh, was not for me.
Agreed so out of nowhere (SPOILER BELOW)
the quiet one did it so cliche. Plus portraying a nasty stereotype of adopted kids

The last part of the book was just so random for me. Like I was expecting some great drama about how the Katie woman was pretending to be Jane Russel or like Alistair secretly had like three wives or something- but no, Alistair was just a good guy (??) and Ethan just decided to randomly stalk Anna (??). Also GrannyLizzie sus af and Anna took SUUUCCHH a long time to catch on. Like hello? she was the only one you told your name to, and the only one you told your family said 'guess who' and she was still like IT MUST HAVE BEEN ME like girl what

Yeah, it was very predictable. I also started getting really sad for some reason because the narrator was so depressed and reclusive that I began to pick up those emotions. It was weird. I felt that I already knew what was going to happen midway through the book. I also didn't like how they made this huge deal about her being a recluse, especially during quarantine, and seemed like the plot wasn't all that interesting and dragged on.

Have any/all of you read the New Yorker article about the author? not liking it was probably right.
Janise Kieffer
Interesting background. It seems like this kind of confabulation is more common than you'd think - or at least we're hearing about it now. I wonder if

I found this book incredibly hard to get through. Although there were some surprises, I found the main character unlikable and extremely hard to relate to. I also found many of the major plot points to be very predictable, which is pretty problematic for a thriller novel.

Jessica, I agree with you. It didn't take long for me to figure out what (I thought) was going on. Added to that, I do not like the unreliable narrator genre.

I can completely say I felt exactly the same way! the first 100 pages of the book was quite slow paced and and mostly gave you no reason to continue , as it went, there was a sudden change of events which basically established the plot, still I wasn't satisfied with the climax...and yes the protagonist was quite predictable and repetitive which continued to bore the readers
First 30-40 chapters were very boring. This book feels very draggy and extremely long and wordy (some bits were unnecessary) It did get more interesting after they started investigating and but the ending was meh.. Felt rushed, wasn't satisfying. Tbh would have dropped the book if it was not for an assignment lol
The book was not that bad for me personally. But the movie and the series was
I really liked the book, and waited to watch the movie until I did read the book. I was extremely disappointed by the movie. The book kept me on the edge of my seat and I read it in one day. I really liked it.
I do agree though that it was predictable and the character was repetitive, and although I know cops question things, but the way the female cop treated her just made me sick to my stomach. I know it was supposed to add to the story, but instead it really took away from the story for me.

The plot was predictable? What do you mean? There is no was you thought that they were the killer. But I agree with you (I'm hesitant to be judgmental of books that seem to be really popular. I feel like if they're that popular they must have done something right.).
The book was good but it had too many pointless details that didn't even add anything to the plot
I agree! It was a total rip off of Rear Window and Girl on a Train.
Nope. I'm with you.
I never warmed to the main character either. I found her casual misuse of alcohol and meds a convenient excuse for dodging reality. So I never really cared what happened to her in the long run.
I also thought the book over-long, dragging terribly from the mid-point to the end.

I'm so glad it's not just me! I agree with everything you said.
I found myself getting so irritated at the main character grabbing that merlot to be a cheap and cliche'd way for her to process the gaslighting. I also found the book to be sort of predictable as well. I read the book in one sitting because it just felt like one of those books that you're not hanging on the edge of your seat - just kind of like hurry up and tell me how it ends. Do you know what I mean?
Yes! I feel the same way. I don't understand why it got optioned for a movie. So predictable.
Please don't read this. Just read Saving April instead. Don't support plagiarism.
I enjoyed the last quarter of the book, but that was because that's where everything was revealed. Other than that, I agree that the main character was very unlikable.
I did not like it. I hated how they dragged it out to keep making me hope her daughter survived (I thought it was fairly obvious that would be the twist) also sick of books suggesting adopted children are pyschos
I agree. There was nothing new here. It's just like the Hitchcock movie Rear Window, which happens to be based on a short story.
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE!!!!!
I agree with Ariana that the last quarter of the book was good. But the main character was truly unlikeable (I love writing unlikeable protagonists, but this one was just....no redeeming qualities).
My main problem with the book is that it seemed unnecessarily long. So much of it was just....exposition in the middle.

I could not listen beyond the first disc. It did not capture my attention at all. A total BORE!
I could not stand this book. AND I absolutely could not handle the audio version.
Agreed! I was prepared to love this book as much as I loved Gone Girl, but I just did not... at all. I was thoroughly disappointed. Especially after all the hype this book got from the reviews.
I too wondered how it received such rave reviews because I thought the whole story fell short of being a good read. Most of the reasons have already been said in other reviews.
I agree 100%. I was expecting so much more out of this book. I will say I was not expecting her family to already be dead but everything else was pretty boring or predictable. The main character was exhausting.
Totally agree. The plot was a mashup of movies, such as Rear Window, The Lady Vanishes, etc... Dr. Anna Fox is the worst child shrink EVER. Alcoholics are boring and self-involved. Even the description of her agoraphobia was annoying, with all that “One, Two, Three, opening of umbrellas and keeping her eyes shut.
As far as readers liking it, never underestimate the fact that most people are easily pleased with cheap thrills. You can propose the same plot in different locations and they won’t notice. Just think about James Bond’s movies: it’s basically the same plot, with different actors and locations 😃
PS One could eve add that the plot is offensive to women, portrayed as weak, stupid, dependant and blinded by love.
