Kavitha Sivakumar | 626 comments Rules for this mini readathon challenge:

Participants have to be in pairs. You can bring in your own pair. If you don't have anyone, we will pair you with another person without a pair. If we can't find anyone, you will be asked to join an existing pair as the third person.
Duration: one month (June 2020)

There will be a list of books from which both should read and compete. The one with higher page count at the end of month is winner.

Booklist: Each partner can nominate 10 books (count can be mutually increased after discussion with your partner. Max limit for nominating books is 25. )

Apart from this, Each partner should suggest 2 challenge books that must be compulsorily read by his/her partner.

So there will be totally 24 books minimum in the list which can be counted towards this challenge. This must be chosen and fixed before commencing the challenge.

You can leave some wildcard slots to populate later during the month but the number of books to be suggested by each partner is FIXED.

The number of wildcard slots is limited to 5. Not more than 5 can be left as wildcard slots

Only completed books will be considered for this challenge. If you have 10 pages unfinished in a tome, the tome is not considered.

The rules pretty much remain the same from the previous challenge.
/topic/show/...

Some differences.
1. You can continue reading your current reads, however, you should not have read more than 50% of the book. Only pages read in June month counted.

1. American Gods

My list (self-nominated):
1. The Butcher Boy (231 pages) 5 stars oof!
2. A Man Called Ove (352 pages) 2 stars
3. Dear Edward (352 pages) 3 stars
4. The Housekeeper and the Professor (192 pages) 3 stars
5. The Vegetarian (208 pages) 2 stars
6. The Sense of an Ending (107 pages) 4 stars
7. Autumn (272 pages) 2 stars
8. Wild Card - The Lottery (30 pages) 4 stars.
9. Wild Card - Nevermind: Nirvana (143 pages ~30ish pages read in May) 5 stars
10. Wild Card

My list (partner-nominated):
1. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (218 pages) 3.75 stars.
2. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (240 pages) 3 stars.

Total pages (possible): 2345
Total pages (compulsory reads): 458
Pages read: 2345/2345 ||| 458/458

All progress updates noted here.

Update: 1/06/20
Started with my first partner-nominated compulsory read, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Going very well at 25%. The prose is easy-flowing and engaging. Christopher is adorable and his circumstances as well as support cast are wholesome at this point. I don't feel like putting the book down :) Unless something really stupid (a la a full 180 in terms of plot and reasoning) happens, it is well on track to being a 4-5 star read for me. Next am planning to pick up either The Butcher Boy or my 2nd compulsory read, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, or both simultaneously.

Update: 2/06/20
Finished Curious Incident with review here. It was very fulfilling with some mixed feelings. I'm glad that I read it though! Thanks, Mak! :) Now onto my 2nd compulsory read.

Update: 4/06/20
Finished Boy in the Striped Pajamas with review here. 3 stars and no more. Thanks for the suggestion, SP. I also squeezed in a short story called The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. 4 stars, and the original publication is free to read on the New Yorker website. Shirley's nonchalant tone is distressing even if nothing terrible happens right until the end. That brings me upto 488 pages done in total so far. I'm now going to read The Butcher Boy. So excited! :)

Update: 6/06/20
Finished The Butcher Boy 5/5 stars and review here. WTF did I just read, I loved every second of it. I think it may genuinely be one of my best reads of the year. Next, I'm going to pick up either A Man Called Ove or another wild card short story as Francie Brady has weighed too deep on my mind. However I finish this read-a-thon, it will be a success in my book on account of The Butcher Boy as it took every ounce of my brain cell to finish!

Update: 8/06/20
Somewhere out of the left field, I picked up The Vegetarian. 2 stars with a short (spoilers-filled) review here. I'm planning to tackle another wildcard now continuing with one of previous non-fic reads (accounting also for the page difference) Nevermind: Nirvana.

10. Wild card

My Mandatory Reads

1. American Gods by Neil Gaiman - 465 pages (11%)
2. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion - 304 pages (36%)
-------------------------------------------------------
Update:
The Rosie Project
This is hilarious. The protagonist, Don Tillman's attempt at finding someone to date and eventually marry, reminds me of Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. I'm glad that asked for this book to be one of my compulsory reads.

The American Gods
I'm a Neil Gaiman fan but somehow I haven't managed to figure the rhythm of this book yet. Hopefully soon.

The Casual Vacancy
Oh boy! How many characters are there in this book! I did not expect anything from the author as I started reading this book. As a book that has been marketed as "fiction for adults", it sure uses profanities... However, were all these profanities necessary? I don't know yet.

Hi Kavita, I don't have a friend for this challenge yet. I would actually enjoy reading the following:

American Gods
The Rosie Project - (this one's recommended by Bill Gates)

So I wonder if I may join Makrand and Sharadha in this mini-readathon?

Hi SP, welcome to the challenge and sure, you can join us :) We're both Gaiman fans so happy to have another on board!

So the rules say that if we're doing the challenge as a trio, then we each need to suggest a book to the other. So, both Makrand and my one compulsory read slot opens up to accommodate your suggestion (and we both will likewise suggest to you one compulsory read each). I can keep American Gods on for you as my suggestion (same as I gave to Makrand) or if you want a change, then let me know.

Looking forward to a suggestion from you. You can pick one up for my TBR or the "compare books" section. Good luck!

I'm a Neil Gaiman fan but somehow I haven't managed to figure the rhythm of this book yet. Hopefully soon."

This is exactly how I felt when reading it. I don't want to say much without giving away spoilers, but I'll just say that it meanders quite a lot. It's an up and down ride, but a fruitful one in the end (hopefully).

Amazing progress there Sharada!!
Now I can feel those vibes of my friends during school exams who'd say they haven't read a damn page and would score distinction. ROFL :P
