Your reaction to this book will largely depend on what kind of writing book you’re looking for, and how high your tolerance is for authors who hold forth about their new age beliefs. (If you’re looking for craft tips on how to improve your writing, this is not the book for you and there is actually a chapter titled ESP.) However, for people wanting encouragement to think of themselves as a writer and make writing a regular part of their life, this has the potential to be very helpful. I couldn’t get on board with her concept of writing as “a conduit for the other world to talk to us but I don’t think that invalidates the convincing points that she makes about its therapeutic properties: “I write to tell myself the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I write, not to make art, but to make sense. I tried her ‘Morning Pages (a daily 3-page stream of consciousness) when the lockdown stress was getting too much, and found it to be very grounding. For me, the book’s main value lies in its large collection of helpful-looking practical suggestions and prompts for anyone who wants to start a regular habit of putting words on the page.
