Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments Trying the December Relay...

Starting pile:
Stars in the Sand currently reading
We're Going on an Elf Hunt
Minerva currently reading
The Question of Red currently reading
Stars in the Sand (Guardian League, #2) by Steven J. Morris We're Going on an Elf Hunt (Guardian League, #3) by Steven J. Morris Minerva by Edith Pawlicki The Question of Red by Laksmi Pamuntjak

I only need 1 more book to make my goal of 52 books, but I need to read 4 books to finish the ATY challenge and read 3 books to review for authors. I started a small business this year and didn't know what to expect for my first holiday shopping rush. I have been busy with orders so I have had limited reading time lately. Hopefully the relay will help me focus on the books I need to finish in my spare time.

I absolutely LOVED Atonement, even though it wasn't perfect (a bit slow at times). Water for Elephants is somewhere on my TBR and needs a plug to be dug up ;-)

Thank you, you too!! Atonement was a bit slow for me, but I'm hoping that setting it aside for a while will help. Water for Elephants was the same way. I am a mood reader though so usually setting it aside and trying again later helps.

My new challenge is The 52 Book Club's 2022 Reading Challenge.

Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments April 2022 Readathon TBR:

I feel that I actually planned well this time, but we'll see! I have a mix of library and my own books as well as a mix of genres since I am a mood reader. I have several graphic novels for the hour sprints, and novellas/shorter books to have quick, light-hearted breaks to help prevent a burnout and headache later in the day. I won't read for the full 24 hours, but I'm going to limit my time on here so I can try to read as much as possible.

Novels:
Gallant
Smoke & Summons
Catwoman: Soulstealer
Bridgerton Collection, Volume One
Wonder
Pride and Premeditation
Defy the Stars
Trials of Fire and Rebirth ARC

Graphic Novels:
Star Wars: Darth Vader, Vol. 1: Vader
Norse Mythology, Vol. 1
The Sandman Omnibus, Vol. 1
The Promised Neverland, Vol. 1

Shorter Books: 250 or less pages
The Caiman (children's book to relieve eye strain)
City of Villains
Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen
The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty's Prince
Pygmalion
Binti audiobook
Artificial Condition
The Archer
A Spindle Splintered

Thoughts:
This is my personal best readathon and I am so happy with my results!

I got up at 4am so that I could start at the 5am start time for my time zone. We're having the siding replaced on the house so I wanted to get a few quiet reading hours in before all the noise started. 4am was way too early since I'm not usually an early riser, but it was nice to be the only one up and see the sun rise. It will probably be a one time thing though. I like my sleep too much lol! I did lose reading time from needing to move for the crew to work and I needed more eye breaks because of only reading ebooks.

I actually planned my tbr really well this time. I had more library books than I needed, but I didn't spend a lot of time picking out my next read since I had so many readily available. I do need to try to have more audiobooks though for breaks from eye strain.

Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments I haven't completed or even started the Inter-Readathon challenge. I have other challenges to finish and my reading has been determined for me lately because I have had several ARCs so it's not easily doable at this time. But I will be able to participate in the readathon on the 22nd and I am super excited! I will post my TBR the week before, some of it depends on if a fried is joining me this time.

message 133: by Stephanie (last edited Jul 20, 2022 02:09PM) (new)

Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments I'm not as excited as usual for the readathon so I struggled trying to plan my TBR this time. I have been battling a reading slump for a few days and a friend was going to join me, but she backed out on me again, so I'm bummed about that. I also DNF’d 2 books in the last week, which is very rare for me and it’s definitely not helping my reading mood. Hopefully the readathon will be a good distraction and get me out of a reading slump.

I am doing a first for me during this time…I'm planning on trying to read only one book during the readathon. The book I chose is The Sandman Omnibus, Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman. This has been on my 2022 TBR for one of my reading challenges and I thought there isn’t a better time to read it than during the readathon especially since the Netflix adaptation will be released in 2 weeks. Even though it’s a collection of graphic novels, I think the 1,000+ pages will give me plenty to read!!

I also have a backup TBR in case I can’t read The Sandman for some reason, or I need a break from it. Here is my backup TBR list, in no particular order:

Novels:
Gallant by V.E. Schwab
Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas

Graphic Novels:
Star Wars: Darth Vader, Vol. 1: Vader by Kieron Gillen
Norse Mythology, Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman

Novellas and Middle Grade Novels:
Signal Moon by Kate Quinn
Little Book of Tiny Tales: Volume 2 by Jeremy Ray
City of Villains by Estelle Laure
The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty's Prince by Serena Valentino
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors, so I hope I'm pulled into The Sandman like with his other novels. The number of pages is intimidating me though lol! I saw the trailer for the adaptation and it looks amazing so I'm determined to read it before August 5th!

Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments Wow I never posted my Readathon Wrap-up...oh well lol! I'm hoping to participate in the Fall Pre-Readathon Challenge, but I probably won't be able to finish all of it due to a couple trips the next 2 months, my busy season starting for my small business, and the other year long challenges I'm already doing. Hopefully some prompts will overlap though.

Fall Pre-Readathon Reading Challenge Possibilities (completed books will be posted on a separate comment)
1. A non-fiction book North to Paradise, The Little Book of Hygge, Walk in My Combat Boots, I: The Creation of a Serial Killer
2. A book with more than one poem in it Milk and Honey
3. A play written by a woman
4. 5 books with autumn colored spines or covers Strangers, The Hobbit, The Best Laid Plans, The Other Man, Scarlet Odyssey
5. A short story collection by an author who did not publish a full-length novel.

6. A book by Stephen King, John Grisham, Clive Cussler, Louis L'Amour, James Michener, Michael Crichton, or Robert Ludlum A Painted House
7. A book by Anita Shreve, Jane Smiley, Barbara Kingsolver, Jan Karon, Pearl S. Buck, Jane Austen, or Edith Wharton Pride and Prejudice reread
8. A book set on each continent (7 total- North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica/Oceania) way too many possibilities to list
9. A book about the future, published before 1960.
10. A book from a series of more than 3 books The Maze

This list would have us reading 20 books to finish all the prompts, though if you wish you can of course combine some of them to read fewer books. If you run out of books to read before the readathon and need a few more prompts...
A. A book that was mentioned by, or being read by a character from one of the books you read for the first 10 prompts.
B. A non-fiction book about a place or subject that featured in one of the books you read for the first 10 prompts.
C. 5 books by one of these authors- Georgette Heyer, Arthur B. Upfield, Ngaio Marsh, Rex Stout, Agatha Christie, Dick Francis, Sue Grafton, Alexander McCall Smith, Susan Wittig Albert, Boris Akunin
D. 3-5 books by one of these authors- Andre Norton, Julian May, Joan D. Vinge, Michael Moorcock, Ben Bova, J.D. Robb, Larry Niven, Robin Hobb, Jack McDevitt, Mercedes Lackey, Kim Stanley Robinson, Octavia Butler.

Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments Fall Readathon

My life has been an emotional rollercoaster filled with tragedy for the last six weeks, so I am going to keep this readathon lowkey. I aim to read for 12 hours during the readathons, but I will be happy if I can read for a couple hours this time. I have struggled focusing on reading lately so I will not set any goals, but I will read for as long as my mind and mood will let me.

I plan on reading my ARC for The Christmas Hummingbird. I’m hoping that it will be a good feel-good book that will keep my focus.

I also have a small backup TBR just in case I need to shift with my mood but still feel that I can keep reading. Most of the books are backlogged ARCs that I wasn’t able to finish before they were released. Here is my backup TBR, in no particular order:

Current Reads: if not finished before Saturday
Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove
The Maze

Novels:
In the Shadow of a Queen
The Heart Rehab Experiment

Audiobook:
An Unexpected Peril

Middle Grade Novel:
The School for Good and Evil

So sorry to hear life hasn't been kind these past weeks. I'm glad you have decided to join us nonetheless; participating lowkey and just mood read sounds like a good plan. I hope you can find your focus and that today's readathon will help you relax a bit and keep your mind off stuff, even if just for a few hours. I hope your book(s) will be a comforting read!

Stephanie (thelittlebookishnerd) | 265 comments Opening Survey!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Northern California
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? The Christmas Hummingbird
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? Reese's pumpkins...gotta have my chocolate lol
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I retired in 2020 due to health reasons. For the same health reasons, I started my own small business in August 2021 and love being my own boss!

Mid-Event Survey!

What are you reading right now? Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove
How many books have you read so far? Only 1 which is more than I expected
What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the readathon? Possibly starting An Unexpected Peril
Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I've mostly had distractions from noises and people talking in the house. I ended up taking a break when I had to read the same paragraph for a third time.

Closing Survey! I'm done reading so doing the closing survey early.

How would you assess your reading overall? I was pleasantly surprised with how much I was able to read since I haven't been able to focus on reading for more than 5 minutes lately.
Did you have a stategy, and if so, did you stick to it? I didn't have a strategy or plans this time. I just went with the flow.
What was your favorite snack? I didn't snack very much today, so Reese's pumpkins was my favorite and only snack.
