I thought that the grandparents in part one were cruel but that did not prepare me for this. So much of this was just creepy and messed up. I have questions about the father, though. The grandparents in part one didn't like him so I thought he must've done something really bad that they didn't want to let Maud in on and I was hoping to find out the truth. Once she got to his house he seemed pretty decent considering the way the adults in the book behave, but I thought we would learn that there was more to his absences than just work but we never did. Then when Maud asked him about her mother it sounded to me like her mother maybe got pregnant out of wedlock. Are we buying that the only thing that the father did that was so shameful was elope?
