Books you have read/Want to read : suggestions and recommendations
People, please don't forget that we all agreed to read If on a Winter's Night a Traveler in November, eh? Just reminding you. We can maybe squeeze female man in just after that and before Fahrenheit 451?
BTW, I had such a mad day yesterday that I forgot to wish you allHAPPY CRAZY MAD HATTER DAY!! for yesterday, October 6.

My day was pretty crazy enough, and a bunch of things in it made me mad! :P

Requested The Female Man on inter-library loan (as I don't know how long it will take to get to me). Invisible Cities is ready to go on Kindle (looking forward to it). Re-reading Macbeth because my new copy got here yesterday. Still haven't reviewed Carmilla. Library called and I have two to pick up (The Annotated Hobbit and an omnibus of Susan Hill, I think). Also, I really need to get M.R. James finished this weekend. I would complain, but it's so much fun to make myself crazy. (Mad Hatter Day, indeed!)
(Was it Invisible Cities or If on a Winter's Night...? I have both, I think, but now I'm confused.)

Oops, have I messed up? Ack, my bad! Long ago, we thought of doing Invisible Cities, but more recently people said they'd rather be interested in If on a Winter's Night, and we already voted on it. It just shows you what a bad time I've been having with computer systems going belly up on me again... sorry, i will fix that - if you guys also want to do Invisible Cities, shall we vote on it again, or are you okay with If on a Winter's Night first, and IC later?
Provisional schedule here /topic/show/... , but it hasn't been updated to include all the ghost stories. Let me just get to a more comfortable keyboard and I will try to fix things up. :P

That is fine by me. (Really either way; I think I am going to end up reading them both one after the other; I can discuss whenever everyone is ready.)

Okay, mark the book as "to read" or "reading" as the case may be, then you will see, if you refresh, you will have a "review" even if there's nothing written in the review space. Then go "edit review" - and down towards the bottom you will see something like "more options" that you can click on, open that and you will see a box "who recommended it to me".
As you type the person's name, a green suggestion should come up underneath. Make sure you type it exactly like the suggestion.
If you did it correctly, when you click "save" right at the bottom, your suggestion will go green indicating that it is now a link. If you did not type exactly the same as the suggestion or something went wrong, the name will show in black- in other words, not a link. You may need to experiment a bit to get that process just right. :)
Have fun!

@ Cecily, Amy and everyone: Oh good - okay, so if we do IOAWN in November, when would you people want to do Invis. Cities?

Thanks much!

It's 165 pages and the other is 260 pages. I will probably read them both next month. I am open to pretty much any schedule for discussion. (This could be an optional read, with a thread up when we start Winter's Night; then whoever reads Cities can show up when/if they get it read.)

It would be nice if y'all could wait for me a bit... I am doing exams and things in November. (Until about Nov. 27) ...plus Derek will be moving around that time? I had peeked at Invisible Cities, and didn't like it at all. I am guessing it might give quite dense material for discussion. Since i've been hearing about it since forever, I would really like to discuss it... I would hate to be "out" on that as I have been for all of our current reads due to lack of time. I will have all the time in the world for at least 3 months after November.

:) No rush at all. Whatever works for the rest of the crew works for me.

I sooo hated Ship of Magic. /review/show...
I'd heard so many good things about Hobb. None of them are true.

Depends on what one likes or dislikes I too hated her last book in farseer trilogy. But I loved ship of magic because she has created a wonderful world with awesome characters.

oooh, Terry Pratchett! May he rest in peace.

It will take a while as I am reading to Alex on long drives. We just started Pyramids, #7?
I really must read more of them. Pyramids happens to be one of the very few I have read. But you're right, now is indeed a good time to be reading his books.
Magdelanye has reminded me that we were going to do City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff VanderMeer. She is rearing to go because she finally got the book from her library. Anybody else in on that? I can do it anytime after Monday October 20.

@ Ruth and Amy: Oh good, oh good. Ruth, I think you had mentioned long ago that you do have it?
So it's a date for this coming week Monday then? ...or is that too soon?

I need to check availability, but even if I need to find it, I should be able to catch up. Monday is fine for me. (Are we still doing The King in Yellow as well?)

Hmm, I thought you might have it already. The thing with Magdelanye is that she has limited access to books and the internet, and she has been waiting months for it. Yes, the King in Yellow has not been removed - it seems that only 2 "to read" books appears on the group home page at a time.
Since our Halloween reads are quite loosely timed, we can maybe change the dates of Yellow King/ City of Saints a few days forward or backward as it suits everyone?
Just by the way, COSAM has a lot of creepiness in it, -it's not ghostly, but weird enough to be not entirely unfitting for around Halloween time. :)

No need to change the dates on my account. I'm a third of the way through KiY and I will be able to get the other one way or another over the weekend. (I don't think I have it yet but I will double check the Kindle since you mentioned it; sometimes I do that kind of thing.)

Here my review of 3rd book in Hitchhiker's guide to galaxy.
My library's webpage says my hold for COSAM has arrived! World record time. I am all squee and giggles. So now I know what to read next :)

Oh dear, but you might not like it. I admit the beginning (of the first story) seems rather boring, but it definitely picks up towards the end! ...and at the end, you see a lot of things that you probably missed at the beginning! Jeff Vandermeer is like that. He lulls you, and then, BAM! Most of the 'history' story is boring though, unless you are a po-mo geek. (view spoiler)
